This paper presents a novel interval type-2 fuzzy logic control architecture for flocking system when the system has noisy sensor measurements. The traditional type-1 fuzzy logic controller (FLC) using precise type-1 fuzzy sets cannot fully model and handle the uncertainties of sensor data. However, type-2 FLC using type-2 fuzzy sets with a footprint of uncertainty (FOU) produces better performances under noisy environments. In this paper, therefore, we present a reactive control architecture for flocking algorithm that is based on interval type 2 FLC to implement the flocking behaviors consisting separation, obstacle avoidance, and velocity matching behaviors. The type-2 based control system could cope with the uncertainties of noisy sensor measurements and resulted in good performances that outperformed the type-1 FLC.

The 19th robotics program at the annual AAAI conference was held in Atlanta, Georgia, in July 2010. In this article we give a summary of three components of the exhibition: the Small-Scale Manipulation Challenge: Robotic Chess;the Learning by Demonstration Challenge;and the Education Track. In each section we detail the challenge task. We also describe the participating teams, highlight the research questions they tackled, and briefly describe the systems they demonstrated. There is an increasing demand for creative scientific, engineering, and management talent to meet national needs. We believe that the best way to educate professionals for leadership roles is in a unified multi-disciplinary curriculum. This paper describes one such program, a Master of Science degree in robotics engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, whose goal is to prepare men and women for technical leadership in the robotics industry and research in robotics. The program, launched in fall 2009, develops competence in electro-mechanical-computational systems and an awareness of management systems. It constitutes a multi-disciplinary effort by faculty in Arts & Sciences (Mathematics and computer Science), engineering (Electrical & computer engineering and Mechanical engineering), and Management. The program is organized around a technical coursework core with select science and engineering electives. Technical strength is supplemented by organizational and management principles embodied in context courses in Systems engineering and Management. The program culminates in individual capstone projects that take the form of a thesis, directed research, or practicum with written report. In all cases, a public oral presentation is required. A B.S./M.S. option allows the program to be completed in a single additional year of work past the Bachelor's degree. By using existing courses where appropriate, we were able to start the program by developing only two new courses, Foundations of robotics and Robot Dynamics, supplemented by special topics, independent study, and other project work. We anticipate adding new courses as the program grows, additional faculty join the program, and as we introduce a Ph.D. in robotics engineering. Initial response to the program by students and industry has been very positive, and the program shows great promise to contribute significantly to meeting future engineering workforce needs. © American Society for engineering Education,

Virtual and augmented reality environments have been adopted in medicine as a means to enhance the clinician's view of the anatomy and facilitate the performance of minimally invasive procedures. Their value is truly appreciated during interventions where the surgeon cannot directly visualize the targets to be treated, such as during cardiac procedures performed on the beating heart. These environments must accurately represent the real surgical field and require seamless integration of pre- and intra-operative imaging, surgical tracking, and visualization technology in a common framework centered around the patient. This review begins with an overview of minimally invasive cardiac interventions, describes the architecture of a typical surgical guidance platform including imaging, tracking, registration and visualization, highlights both clinical and engineering accuracy limitations in cardiac image guidance, and discusses the translation of the work from the laboratory into the operating room together with typically encountered challenges. © 2008 IEEE.

In 2007, the University of Windsor established formal learning outcomes for their cooperative education program and implemented new educational strategies to support the achievement of those outcomes. To gauge the effect of the newly implemented activities on the achievement of the learning outcomes, a survey was developed and administered to students and alumni of the unrevised program (control group) and, more recently in 2009, to students participating in the revised program (experimental group). The survey questions were designed to assess respondents' perceptions of the effect that co-op had on: their academic and career-related goals and motivation;identification of personal strengths, weaknesses and preferences;understanding of academic theory and technical knowledge;development of attributes;and the ability to effectively contribute in the workplace through identified soft and transferable industry-related skills. Students participating in co-op at the University of Windsor may complete regular or extended length work terms. Regular work terms are generally four-months in length, while extended work terms are at least eight months long, although many companies request co-op students for twelve to sixteen month periods. The survey demographics included a question about work term duration, so that the effects of work term length on learning outcomes achievement might also be examined. Although the survey revealed some positive trends related to learning outcomes achievement for control versus experimental groups, they were not at statistically significant levels. However, if the analysis was limited to students who had completed extended work terms, three areas showed changes at statistically significant levels. Decreases in positive response levels were seen for the experimental group with respect to students' abilities to identify personal weaknesses related to their academic options and personal preferences related to workplace options. This research proposes a method to eliminate friction effect and reduced tracking error on CNC milling machines. A CNC milling machine has many connected mechanical components which have friction effects such as ball screws and rails. To control servo motors which are used to drive X-Y table in CNC milling machine, the conventional PID controller is widely used. In this research, Panasonic motor driver is set to the torque control mode. To compensate the friction effects, the friction feedforward compensation method is proposed. Moreover, to reduce the position tracking error, position feedforward controller is used. The simulation and implementation of position control in one axis of PID with Friction Feedforward Compensation and Position Feedforward Controller (FFC-PFC) are presented.

This paper presents how a senior capstone project can be utilized to build partnerships between the academia and several companies representing key industries in modern robotics technology. The project can be described as designing a portable robotic workcell for industry to showcase state-of-the-art equipment and technologies in robotics. The industrial sponsor for this project is Applied Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) located in Orion, Michigan. AMT plans to use the workcell for demonstrating current robotics technology in tradeshows, industrial open houses and/or robotics conferences. In addition, the workcell is to be used as a platform to provide training to engineers working in robotics industry on robot programming, machine vision and systems integration. The small size, flexible design and durability make the workcell appealing to many other applications in robotics engineering. An engineering senior project design team composed of one computer engineer, two electrical engineers and two manufacturing engineering technologists at Lake Superior State University has worked on this project as their capstone design requirement through the 2007-2008 academic year. Lake Superior State University offers ABET accredited programs in computer, electrical and mechanical engineering as well as in manufacturing engineering technology. robotics and automation is a degree option in all majors. The capstone senior design project is an integral part of all the degree programs and provides a real-life experience for the engineering senior students. The two-semester course has been an important tool to introduce students to soft skills such as project management, communications, engineering economics, and engineering ethics. The paper illustrates how a capstone design project can be used to build partnerships in robotics technology. robotics engineering (RBE) is a new undergraduate degree program at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). As of the fall semester of 2008, the program is the fourth largest discipline at the institution in terms of freshman enrollment. At the core of the curriculum are four signature courses called Unified robotics I-IV. The goal of these courses is to introduce students to the multidisciplinary theory and practice of robotics engineering, integrating the fields of computer science, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical engineering. The sophomore level courses, RBE 2001 and RBE 2002, introduce students to the foundational concepts of robotics such as kinematics, pneumatics, circuits, electric motors, sensors, signal processing and embedded system programming. The junior level courses, RBE 3001 and RBE 3002, build on this foundation to ensure that students understand the analysis of selected components and learn system-level design and development of a robotic system including embedded design. This paper discusses the development of a two-course sequence in undergraduate robotics education, Unified robotics I and II, in detail. Learning outcomes and sample schedules illustrating our approach to designing a new robotics engineering program at the undergraduate level are presented. The paper exemplifies the robotics systems designed by the students within the scope of laboratory experiences and course projects. Finally, we discuss lessons learned, future directions, and student feedback. The initial observations and results are in favor of promoting robotics engineering as a new undergraduate engineering program. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

Auditory perception is one of the most important functions for robotics applications. Microphone arrays are widely used for auditory perception in which the spatial structure of microphones is usually known. In practice, microphone array calibration can be tedious and other devices or means are required. The structure from sound (SFS) approach addresses the problem of simultaneously localizing a set of microphones and a set of acoustic events that provides a great flexibility to calibrate different setups of microphone arrays. However, the existing method does not take measurement uncertainty into account and does not provide uncertainty estimates of the SFS results. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic structure from sound (PSFS) approach using the unscented transform in which the uncertainties of the PSFS results are also available. In addition, a probabilistic sound source localization approach using the PSFS results is provided to improve sound source localization accuracy. The ample results of simulation and experiments using low-cost, off-the-shelf microphones demonstrate the feasibility and performance of the proposed PSFS approach. © 2009 VSP.
