Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has been promoted, as the solution to the identification and tracking of objects, without any means of wires or human intervention. RFID middleware is a prominent component of any non-trivial RFID deployment. EPCglobal has been actively working towards a set of middleware standards for large scale interoperable RFID deployments (such as the Electronic Product Code Application Level Events (EPC-ALE) and Information Sharing (EPCIS) standards), while several middleware projects have concentrated in the implementation of these standards. However, there is still a clear need for middleware modules that map low-level tag streams (e.g., stemming from EPC-ALE modules) to Business Events (e.g., events formulated according to the EPCIS standard). In this paper, we introduce a middleware module for bridging EPC-ALE reports with EPCIS repositories based on automated generation of business events subject to Master Data and context pertaining to a particular business case. We call the respective middleware module Business Event Generator (BEG). BEG is a configurable engine that can automatically create business events from a set of low-level tag streams. In addition to the BEG module, we introduce tools and techniques for configuring the BEG engine. We illustrate the use of the above middleware and tools based on a set of indicative use cases in the area of logistics and supply chain management. © 2011 IEEE.

We propose an audiovisual system for detecting the active speaker in cluttered and reverberant environments where more than one person speaks and moves. The feasibility of the systems is examined in the context of smart-houses supporting elderly living alone. Rather than using only audio, the system utilizes audiovisual information from a minimal setup comprising of three microphones and one camera feeding separate audio and visual tracking modules. The audio module operates using a Particle Filter (PF) in order to provide accurate acoustic source location under reverberant conditions. The visual module combines with a second PF video cues generated by colour and face measurements. The final decision is performed through the employment of a fusion mechanism that combines the estimate of each modality according to the current observations. Results indicate that the performance of the proposed multi-modal tracking can potentially enable services for the elderly in their domestic environment if those require knowledge of speaker.

This paper introduces a novel sensor information fusion system enabling security and surveillance in large scale sensor saturated urban environments. The system is built over state-of-the art sensor networks middleware and provides information fusion at multiple layers. A distinguishing characteristic of the system is that it support seamless integration with semantic web middleware (including ontologies and inference mechanisms), which enable intelligent high-level accurate reasoning. This is a key functionality for efficient surveillance in large scale environment, where manual inspection of individual tracking systems becomes extremely resourceful and overall impractical. A proof-of-concept implementation of the system manifests its benefits and technical challenges, while also outlining lessons learnt. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper proposes a robust background estimator for fixed cameras, to be used for foreground segmentation in tracking systems. The estimator is based on a variation of Stauffer's dynamic background algorithm, where the background learning rate is spatiotemporally adapted. The adaptation is based on the position, size and velocity of the various foreground objects already detected. The evidence for the initialization and tracking of the foreground objects is obtained by combining a pixel map showing the temporal persistence of each image pixel and the edge binary image. The spatiotemporal adaptation of the learning rate overcomes the problem of fading immobile or slowly moving objects into the background encountered in all to-date variations of Stauffer's algorithm, while the combination with edge information allows for objects already present in the scene at startup time and new objects to be treated by the same image processing module

Sensing the presence and state of people is of paramount importance in assistive living environments. In this paper we utilise a set of fixed, calibrated cameras to model the bodies of people directly in three dimensions. An adaptive foreground segmentation algorithm is run per camera, providing evidence to be collected in 3D body blobs. A particle filter tracker allows monitoring the modelled bodies across time, offering estimations of their state by using hot-spots and body posture. We apply our system on fall detection and activity monitoring for the elderly, addressing both emergency and cognitive care.

We present a system that estimates the direction of arrival of two competing acoustic sources using two closely spaced receivers that form a differential microphone array. The main advantage of the proposed array topology is that null steering can be essentially performed by adapting a set of two scalars. The direction of arrival estimation relies on the successful estimation of the relative delays between the microphone signals using the decorrelation constraint. Processing is performed in real-time by operating on blocks of recorded data. We examine the performance of the system for different block sizes and investigate its robustness in environments of strong multipath reflections where algorithms often fail to distinguish between the true direction of arrival and that of a dominant reflection. The overall performance of the system is compared to the simple omni-directional array topology. The results indicate that the examined framework can track the two directions of arrival adequately.

Voice activity detection systems attempt to discriminate between voice and other ambient sounds. Most systems use a single microphone approach and rely on training prior to employment. The performance of these systems relies heavily on reverberation and noise levels. In this paper we present an unsupervised voice activity detection system that uses pairs of microphones to discern between a coherent acoustic source and spatially diffuse noise of low coherence. Measurement of coherency is performed using an information theoretic metric that integrates means to filter out more effectively the effect of reverberation and noise. Using extensive experiments, the performance of the system is investigated. Based on the conditions imposed by the experimental environments it is shown that the proposed system remains more robust than its counterparts in all cases.

This paper describes the video-based face recognition evaluation performed under the CHIL project and the systems that participated to it, along with the obtained first year results. The evaluation methodology comprises a specially built database of videos and an evaluation protocol. Two complete automatic face detection and recognition systems from two academic institutions participated to the evaluation. In this work we examine significant theoretical issues related to the constitutive modelling of a two-phase shape memory alloy which undergoes large deformations. For this purpose, we propose a new generalized plasticity based model. The model is based on a standard fractions approach and considers a local multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into elastic and inelastic (transformation induced) parts, as its basic kinematic assumption. We also assess the ability of the model in simulating several patterns of the complex behavior of the material in question, by three representative numerical examples. These examples comprise a standard uniaxial tension problem, a torsion problem and an additional problem dealing with non-conventional pseudoelastic response. © 2014 by Institute of Fundamental Technological Research.
