Prior to the deep learning era, shape was commonly used to describe the objects. Nowadays, state-of-the-art (SOTA) algorithms in medical imaging are predominantly diverging from computer vision, where voxel grids, meshes, point clouds, and implicit surface models are used. This is seen from numerous shape-related publications in premier vision conferences as well as the growing popularity of ShapeNet (about 51,300 models) and Princeton ModelNet (127,915 models). For the medical domain, we present a large collection of anatomical shapes (e.g., bones, organs, vessels) and 3D models of surgical instrument, called MedShapeNet, created to facilitate the translation of data-driven vision algorithms to medical applications and to adapt SOTA vision algorithms to medical problems. As a unique feature, we directly model the majority of shapes on the imaging data of real patients. As of today, MedShapeNet includes 23 datasets with more than 100,000 shapes that are paired with annotations (ground truth). Our data is freely accessible via a web interface and a Python application programming interface (API) and can be used for discriminative, reconstructive, and variational benchmarks as well as various applications in virtual, augmented, or mixed reality, and 3D printing. Exemplary, we present use cases in the fields of classification of brain tumors, skull reconstructions, multi-class anatomy completion, education, and 3D printing. In this paper, we describe the development of an autonomous tracking system to be used in the home of the elderly population living with neurodegenerative disorders including dementia. The technology advancement has potential to produce low-cost solutions for elder-care in a residential setting. Our approach is based on the concept that body tracking interventional systems can be developed by utilizing low-cost technological solutions affordable to the aged population and can be deployed in the residential settings. We are exploring the usefulness of such systems in providing information that can assist with assessment of performance of activities of daily living in the periods between hospital clinic visits. Management of neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and multiple sclerosis involve periodic review of patients at a specialist clinic. At these reviews the clinician solicits information about activities of daily living over the preceding period. This period can be a long interval of 6 to 12 months. When self-reports of activity are compared with independent objective measures, discrepancies are found in many areas of healthcare. This can cause difficulties in management of treatment. The autonomous sensor tracking systems developed here could improve care by giving clinicians objective assessments of relapses in the intervals between clinic visits. This could reduce the time spent on in- clinic examination as clinicians can use objective measures instead of semistructured interviews aimed at eliciting an accurate history. This will allow more time to spend on well-being and treatment options. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Objective: To analyze the anatomical features, physiochemical characteristics and to carry out a high performance thin layer chromatography finger printing on the leaves of Hiptage benghalensis. Methods: Anatomical characterization (organoleptic, microscopic and macroscopic analysis) and physico-chemical analysis (ash content, moisture content, foreign matter, extractive values, and fluorescence analysis) were carried out as per World Health Organization guidelines followed by high performance thin layer chromatography studies. Results: Pharmacognostic studies revealed that leaf of Hiptage benghalensis had a wide and thick semi-circular midrib, thick and dorsiventral lamina, thick adaxial and narrow abaxial epidermis. They also had six to seven layered spongy parenchymal cells. Conclusions: Results of the present study can serve as a marker for authentic identification and authentication of the plant of this taxon. © 2016 Asian Pacific Tropical Medicine Press.

Objective: To investigate the pharmacognostic features and physiochemical properties of the leaves of Barleria montana Wight & Nees. Methods: The leaf samples were subjected to organoleptic, microscopic and macroscopic analysis. Physiochemical properties and fluorescence analysis of the sample under UV and daylight were studied as per World Health Organization norms. Results: Microscopic analysis showed that the plant possessed dorsiventral leaves, lamina, glandular trichomes, calcium carbonate cystoliths and adaxial epidermis. Physiochemical characters like ash and moisture content, extractive values, foreign matter and fluorescent characteristics of the leaf samples were determined and reported. Conclusions: Results obtained from these studies can be used as reliable markers in the identification and standardization of this plant as a herbal remedy. © 2016 Asian Pacific Tropical Medicine Press.

Background: High-resolution estimates of HIV burden across space and time provide an important tool for tracking and monitoring the progress of prevention and control efforts and assist with improving the precision and efficiency of targeting efforts. We aimed to assess HIV incidence and HIV mortality for all second-level administrative units across sub-Saharan Africa. Methods: In this modelling study, we developed a framework that used the geographically specific HIV prevalence data collected in seroprevalence surveys and antenatal care clinics to train a model that estimates HIV incidence and mortality among individuals aged 15–49 years. We used a model-based geostatistical framework to estimate HIV prevalence at the second administrative level in 44 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for 2000–18 and sought data on the number of individuals on antiretroviral therapy (ART) by second-level administrative unit. We then modified the Estimation and Projection Package (EPP) to use these HIV prevalence and treatment estimates to estimate HIV incidence and mortality by second-level administrative unit. Findings: The estimates suggest substantial variation in HIV incidence and mortality rates both between and within countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with 15 countries having a ten-times or greater difference in estimated HIV incidence between the second-level administrative units with the lowest and highest estimated incidence levels. Across all 44 countries in 2018, HIV incidence ranged from 2·8 (95% uncertainty interval 2·1–3·8) in Mauritania to 1585·9 (1369·4–1824·8) cases per 100 000 people in Lesotho and HIV mortality ranged from 0·8 (0·7–0·9) in Mauritania to 676·5 (513·6–888·0) deaths per 100 000 people in Lesotho. Summary Background Intracerebral haemorrhage growth is associated with poor clinical outcome and is a therapeutic target for improving outcome. We aimed to determine the absolute risk and predictors of intracerebral haemorrhage growth, develop and validate prediction models, and evaluate the added value of CT *** In a systematic review of OVID MEDLINE—with additional hand-searching of relevant studies’ bibliographies— from Jan 1, 1970, to Dec 31, 2015, we identified observational cohorts and randomised trials with repeat scanning protocols that included at least ten patients with acute intracerebral haemorrhage. We sought individual patient-level data from corresponding authors for patients aged 18 years or older with data available from brain imaging initially done 0·5-24 h and repeated fewer than 6 days after symptom onset, who had baseline intracerebral haemorrhage volume of less than 150 mL, and did not undergo acute treatment that might reduce intracerebral haemorrhage volume. We estimated the absolute risk and predictors of the primary outcome of intracerebral haemorrhage growth (defined as >6 mL increase in intracerebral haemorrhage volume on repeat imaging) using multivariable logistic regression models in development and validation cohorts in four subgroups of patients, using a hierarchical approach: patients not taking anticoagulant therapy at intracerebral haemorrhage onset (who constituted the largest subgroup), patients taking anticoagulant therapy at intracerebral haemorrhage onset, patients from cohorts that included at least some patients taking anticoagulant therapy at intracerebral haemorrhage onset, and patients for whom both information about anticoagulant therapy at intracerebral haemorrhage onset and spot sign on acute CT angiography were *** Of 4191 studies identified, 77 were eligible for inclusion. Microswimmers capable of propulsion at low Reynolds numbers have great potential for numerous applications. Several kinds of artificial microswimmers, actuated by magnetic fields, with rigid helical tails have been developed. In previous works, we demonstrated that a magnetic swimmer with a soft tail could form a helical shape during rotation to propel itself at low Reynolds numbers. The advantage of compliant structures is that the high softness makes swimmers more adaptive in confined or complex environments. The interfacial friction drags are reduced by using superhydrophobic surfaces. Therefore, this paper aims to study the influence of surface and interface properties, particularly the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the soft tail surface, on the swimming performance. For this, we compared the swimming performance of two millimeter-scaled swimmers with a superhydrophilic soft tail and a superhydrophobic soft tail, respectively, in viscous liquids. The two swimmers exhibit different dynamic morphologies and swimming performance with the same input parameters. The swimmer with a superhydrophobic soft tail shows higher swimming velocity than that with a superhydrophilic soft tail, except in pure glycerol. The present work provides useful informations for selecting surface coating of swimmers with soft tails at low Reynolds numbers. © 2016 IEEE.
