The sulfidation behavior of novel iron oxide sorbents supported using activated-chars during desulfurization of hot coal gases has been studied. The sulfidation of the char-supported sorbents was investigated using a fixed-bed quartz reactor in the temperature range of 673K to 873K. The product gases were analyzed using a GC equipped with a TCD and a FPD detector. The sorbent samples before and after sulfidation were examined using SEM and XRD.

This paper presents an alternative approach, based on the transmission line theory, for determination of the attenuation constant (α), phase constant (β), characteristic impedance (Zo), refractive index (n), effective permittivity (ε) and effective permeability (μ) for active transmission line (TL) metamaterial. When active elements are introduced into the lossy TL meta-material, the gain acquired from the active elements should be evaluated quantitatively against the attenuation due to the loss in order to avoid ambiguities in determining the signs of the effective constitutive parameters. In stead of directly determining the characteristic impedance from S-parameters, we introduce the reflection coefficient as an intermediate quantity to assist solving the characteristic impedance. This paper shows demonstration of this method with an example of active TL metamaterial.

By an illustrative example the design method of FOC based on best rational approximation is discussed. We argue by way of examples that, as a nonlinear integral equation, the gap equation can and does possess many physically distinct solutions for the dressed-quark propagator. The examples are drawn from a class that is successful in describing a broad range of hadron physics observables. We apply the homotopy continuation method to each of our four exemplars and thereby find all solutions that exist within the interesting domains of light current-quark masses and interaction strengths; and simultaneously provide an explanation of the nature and number of the solutions, many of which may be associated with dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. Introducing a stability criterion based on the scalar and pseudoscalar susceptibilities we demonstrate, however, that for any nonzero current-quark mass only the regular Nambu solution of the gap equation is stable against perturbations. This guarantees that the existence of multiple solutions to the gap equation cannot complicate the description of phenomena in hadron physics.

The deformation mechanisms of nanotwinned Cu subjected to nanoscratching are investigated by means of molecular dynamics simulations. Scratching simulations on nanotwinned single-crystalline Cu with the twin planes parallel and perpendicular to the scratching direction are performed. Since the detwinning mechanism is completely suppressed in the former case, no apparent correlation between frictional coefficient and the twin spacing is observed. In samples where the twin planes are perpendicular to the scratching direction, the friction increases as the twin spacing decreases, and then decreases as the twin spacings become even smaller. It results from the competitive plastic deformation between the inclined dislocations and the detwinning mechanism. Subsequent simulations for nanotwinned polycrystalline Cu unveil that in addition to the grain-boundary-associated deformation mechanism, dislocation-mediated detwinning plays a significant role in the plastic deformation of nanotwinned Cu. The twin boundary spacing in turn affects nanotwinned materials to resist scratching via plastic deformation. We demonstrate via the nanoscratching tests that there exists a critical twin boundary spacing for which the friction coefficient is maximized and that this transition results from the competing deformation mechanisms in those nanotwinned materials.
