Fabrication of three-dimensional islet models by geometry-controlled hanging drop method

Hanging-drop method has been widely used to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) in vitro tissue models due to its advantages such as being easy to perform, inexpensive, and permitting precise control of cell spheroid formation. The geometry of hanging drop may play a critical role on the formation of cell spheroids, which, however, has not been explored. In this study, we developed a modified hanging-drop platform that enables the production of cell spheroids in a high-throughput manner by controlling hanging drop geometry with defined spreading ring. The surface tension force is proportional to the spreading ring and gravitational force is determined by the droplet volume, and the geometry can be determined by the balance between surface tension and gravity.β-TC-6 cell spheroids with optimized diameters were fabricated as 3D in vitro islet models. The models show morphology similar to primary islets and have functionality that more closely resembles primary islets than two-dimensional cell culture. The developed platform holds great potential for engineering well-controlled in vitro tissue models for various applications such as physiological and pathological studies, drug screening, as well as transplantation for treatment purpose.

In order to achieve combined mechanical and electrical properties,multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)reinforced Cu/Ti_(3)SiC_(2)/C nanocomposites were further processed by high-pressure torsion(HPT).The maximum microhardness values of central and edge from the composites with 1 wt.%MWCNTs reached HV 130.0 and HV 363.5,which were 43.9%and 39.5%higher than those of the original samples,*** the same content of MWCNTs,its electrical conductivity achieved 3.42×10^(7) S/m,which was increased by 78.1%compared with that of original *** synergistic improvement of mechanical and electrical properties is attributed to the obtained microstructure with increased homogenization and refinement,as well as improved interfacial bonding and reduced *** strengthening mechanisms include dispersion and refinement strengthening for mechanical properties,as well as reduced electron scattering for electrical properties.

Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of water flowing through different heat sinks. Calculations show that the internal fin structure of the heat sink has an important influence on the flow resistance and heat transfer. The zigzag channel has the largest flow resistance, while the straight channel has the smallest flow resistance, but the heat transfer capacity is opposite. In addition, the performance of heat sinks when inserting pin fins with different shapes in straight channels was also compared. The results show that the thermal resistance of circular pin fins is the smallest.

Rapid advancement in aerospace technology has successfully enabled long-term life and economic activities in space,particularly in Low Earth Orbit(LEO),extending up to 2000 km from the mean sea ***,the sustainance of the LEO Economy and its Environmental Control and life support System(ECLSS)still relies on a regular cargo supply of essential commodities(e.g.,water,food)from Earth,for which there still is a lack of adequate and sustainable *** key challenge in this context is developing water treatment technologies and standards that can perform effectively under microgravity *** this technical challenge will be a milestone in providing a scientific basis and the necessary support mechanisms for establishing permanent bases in outer space and *** identify clues towards solving this challenge,we looked back at relevant scientific research exploring novel technologies and standards for deep space exploration,also considering feedback for enhancing these technologies on *** our findings,we share our outlook for the future of drinking water treatment in *** also bring up a new concept for space aquatic chemistry,considering the closed environment of engineered systems operating in microgravity.

Maneuverability is a critical factor for UAV s to survive in high-intensity combat scenarios. Traditional UAV s typically operate in a stable motion state to ensure flight safety. However, in highly contested environments, special missions require high mobility while maintaining safety. Tilt-rotor UAV s, which combine the characteristics of fixed-wing and multi-rotor UAVs, can perform extreme maneuvers, such as high angles of attack and post-stall maneuvers, to rapidly change posture and complete tasks like positioning and defense. Therefore, integrating and optimizing safety and maneuverability metrics is necessary for enabling UAV s to achieve extreme maneuverability. In this paper, extreme maneuver planning and control for tilt-rotor UAV s are realized through a method based on third-order Bezier curve planning of body angular velocity. Experimental results demonstrate tilt-rotor UAVs can perform extreme super-maneuverable flips while maintaining overall process control.

The rhesus macaque(Macaca mulatta)is a crucial experimental animal that shares many genetic,brain organizational,and behavioral characteristics with humans.A macaque brain atlas is fundamental to biomedical and evolutionary ***,even though connectivity is vital for understanding brain functions,a connectivity-based whole-brain atlas of the macaque has not previously been *** this study,we created a new whole-brain map,the Macaque Brainnetome Atlas(MacBNA),based on the anatomical connectivity profiles provided by high angular and spatial resolution ex vivo diffusion MRI *** new atlas consists of 248 cortical and 56 subcortical regions as well as their structural and functional *** parcellation and the diffusion-based tractography were evaluated with invasive neuronal-tracing and Nissl-stained *** a demonstrative application,the structural connectivity divergence between macaque and human brains was mapped using the Brainnetome atlases of those two species to uncover the genetic underpinnings of the evolutionary changes in brain *** resulting resource includes:(1)the thoroughly delineated Macaque Brainnetome Atlas(MacBNA),(2)regional connectivity profiles,(3)the postmortem high-resolution macaque diffusion and T2-weighted MRI dataset(Brainnetome-8),and(4)multi-contrast MRI,neuronal-tracing,and histological images collected from a single *** can serve as a common reference frame for mapping multifaceted features across modalities and spatial scales and for integrative investigation and characterization of brain organization and ***,it will enrich the collaborative resource platform for nonhuman primates and facilitate translational and comparative neuroscience research.

Driven by information technology, mod-ern warfare is more diverse and intelligent than traditional warfare, in which intelligent unmanned system plays an increasingly important role. To defend against distant threat of unmanned military arma-ments, it's essential to deploy radars, sonars, satellites, and other long-range detection equipment to build a multidimensional national defense monitoring system. Due to the unpredictable nature of battlefield, radar-based reconnaissance missions require operators to have extensive experience and maintain a high level of focus. However, prolonged radar operations may impose a heavy psychological burden on operators and even affect their mental functions. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a cognitive en-hancement and assessment system that projects virtual 3D battlefield scenarios onto the real world based on augmented reality and evaluates operators' mental state through eye-tracking technology.

Aluminum protective coatings have poor performance due to the significant difference in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the substrate and the coating. In this study, porous anodic aluminum layer, which have high bonding, well matching and grew in situ on the substrate of aluminum alloy (4032) using anodic oxidation, and then thermal barrier coatings were produced on the surface by laser surface modification and atmospheric plasma spraying (APS). The aim of this way is to improve the interface thermal shock resistance (TSR) of the coatings. The results showed that the coatings with anodic aluminum layer are much higher than that of metallic bond coatings. Furthermore, the failure analysis suggested that the bonding stability of the coatings is influenced by the surface state, surface mosaic structure, as well as such as CTE and surface roughness. Eventually, a double-layer thermal stress model was developed to characterize the residual stresses caused by deformation mismatch in the coatings. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The external atmosphere can significantly affect the microstructure within the oxide scale. In this paper, the isothermal oxidation of CoNiCrAlHf alloys is studied in dry air and water vapor. HfO2 peg formed at the Al2O3/alloy interface duo to in-situ oxidation. In contrast, the presence of water vapor facilitates the inward of O, causing the linear distribution of HfO2. In addition, water vapor has effectively retard the phase transformation of metastable-Al2O3 to α-Al2O3. In high temperature water vapor, the CoNiCrAlHf alloys form a duplex-layer, consisting of external δ-Al2O3 and internal γ-Al2O3.
