A search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a top-quark pair, tt¯H, is presented. The analysis uses 36.1 fb−1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. The search targets the H→bb¯ decay mode. The selected events contain either one or two electrons or muons from the top-quark decays, and are then categorized according to the number of jets and how likely these are to contain b-hadrons. Multivariate techniques are used to discriminate between signal and background events, the latter being dominated by tt¯+jets production. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, the ratio of the measured tt¯H signal cross-section to the standard model expectation is found to be μ=0.84−0.61+0.64. A value of μ greater than 2.0 is excluded at 95% confidence level (C.L.) while the expected upper limit is μ<1.2 in the absence of a tt¯H signal.

A search is presented for photonic signatures, motivated by generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. This search makes use of proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, and it explores models dominated by both strong and electroweak production of supersymmetric partner states. Experimental signatures incorporating an isolated photon and significant missing transverse momentum are explored. These signatures include events with an additional photon or additional jet activity not associated with any specific underlying quark flavor. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model prediction, and 95% confidence-level upper limits of between 0.083 and 0.32 fb are set on the visible cross section of contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. These results are interpreted in terms of lower limits on the masses of gluinos, squarks, and gauginos in the context of generalized models of gauge-mediated supersymmetry, which reach as high as 2.3 TeV for strongly produced and 1.3 TeV for weakly produced supersymmetric partner pairs.

A rapid path planning adaptive optimization algorithm based on fuzzy neural network is proposed for mobile robot in a static unknown environment. In order to solve the limitations of the subjective experience in the fuzzy control and design problems of path planning, conventional neural network is given fuzzy input signals and fuzzy weights by using the membership function and the error cost function of fuzzy control theory. Neural network is constructed from fuzzy rules to accelerate the convergence of FNN, so that the collision-free motion is achieved by combining with the formation control method for mobile robot. Finally, the experiment results show that the robot path planning based on FNN algorithm is faster than other algorithms to finish the task as well as a better controllability and adaptability by the platform of Player/Stage.

Searches for dijet resonances with sub-TeV masses using the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider can be statistically limited by the bandwidth available to inclusive single-jet triggers, whose data-collection rates at low transverse momentum are much lower than the rate from standard model multijet production. This Letter describes a new search for dijet resonances where this limitation is overcome by recording only the event information calculated by the jet trigger algorithms, thereby allowing much higher event rates with reduced storage needs. The search targets low-mass dijet resonances in the range 450–1800 GeV. The analyzed data set has an integrated luminosity of up to 29.3 fb−1 and was recorded at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No excesses are found; limits are set on Gaussian-shaped contributions to the dijet mass distribution from new particles and on a model of dark-matter particles with axial-vector couplings to quarks.

A search for resonant and nonresonant pair production of Higgs bosons in the bb¯τ+τ− final state is presented. The search uses 36.1 fb−1 of pp collision data with s=13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. Decays of the τ-lepton pairs with at least one τ lepton decaying to final states with hadrons and a neutrino are considered. No significant excess above the expected background is observed in the data. The cross-section times branching ratio for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production is constrained to be less than 30.9 fb, 12.7 times the standard model expectation, at 95% confidence level. A combination of the searches for pair-produced vectorlike partners of the top and bottom quarks in various decay channels (T→Zt/Wb/Ht, b→Zb/Wt/Hb) is performed using 36.1 fb−1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The observed data are found to be in good agreement with the standard model background prediction in all individual searches. Therefore, combined 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the production cross section for a range of vectorlike quark scenarios, significantly improving upon the reach of the individual searches. Model-independent limits are set assuming the vectorlike quarks decay to standard model particles. A singlet T is excluded for masses below 1.31 TeV and a singlet b is excluded for masses below 1.22 TeV. Assuming a weak isospin (T,b) doublet and |VTb|≪|Vtb|, T and b masses below 1.37 TeV are excluded.

This Letter presents a measurement of γγ→μ+μ− production in Pb+Pb collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at sNN=5.02 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 0.49 nb−1. The azimuthal angle and transverse momentum correlations between the muons are measured as a function of collision centrality. The muon pairs are produced from γγ through the interaction of the large electromagnetic fields of the nuclei. The contribution from background sources of muon pairs is removed using a template fit method. In peripheral collisions, the muons exhibit a strong back-to-back correlation consistent with previous measurements of muon pair production in ultraperipheral collisions. The angular correlations are observed to broaden significantly in central collisions. The modifications are qualitatively consistent with rescattering of the muons while passing through the hot matter produced in the collision.

This Letter presents a normalized differential cross-section measurement in a fiducial phase-space region where interference effects between top-quark pair production and associated production of a single top quark with a W boson and a b-quark are significant. Events with exactly two leptons (ee, μμ, or eμ) and two b-tagged jets that satisfy a multiparticle invariant mass requirement are selected from 36.1 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data taken at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. The results are compared with predictions from simulations using various strategies for the interference. The standard prescriptions for interference modeling are significantly different from each other but are within 2σ of the data. State-of-the-art predictions that naturally incorporate interference effects provide the best description of the data in the measured region of phase space most sensitive to these effects. These results provide an important constraint on interference models and will guide future model development and tuning.

Algorithms are the foundation of computer Science and engineering, which instruct the computer to do the required task efficiently. Design and Analysis of Algorithms (DAA) course is aimed to develop problem solving skills, choose appropriate design strategy and analyze given algorithm for its performance in the student community. In this paper authors propose active learning methodologies like Manifold Problem Assignment, Inspection of Algorithms, technique based Learning, Identification and Designing Method and Realization of Algorithm to meet above mentioned objectives. Since the course is taught along with tutorial, different set of problems are given across the batches to develop and analyze an algorithm by choosing appropriate design technique. Tests are conducted on each design strategy, which helped the students to apply them to the design process. At the end of the semester students are given set of problems, where they are expected to choose suitable design strategy like divide and conquer, decrease and conquer and transform and conquer to write and analyze the algorithm. Through this pedagogical activity, the Program Outcomes 3a and 3c of AbET 3a-3k are achieved. 70% of learners strongly agreed that their problem solving ability is enhanced and 30% of learners agreed that there is an improvement in algorithm design ability.

A search for direct pair production of top squarks in final states with two tau leptons, b-jets, and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data at s=13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 and 2016. Two exclusive channels with either two hadronically decaying tau leptons or one hadronically and one leptonically decaying tau lepton are considered. No significant deviation from the Standard Model predictions is observed in the data. The analysis results are interpreted in terms of model-independent limits and used to derive exclusion limits on the masses of the top squark t˜1 and the tau slepton τ˜1 in a simplified model of supersymmetry with a nearly massless gravitino. In this model, masses up to m(t˜1)=1.16 TeV and m(τ˜1)=1.00 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.
