This paper presents a modified back-propagation algorithm using magnified gradient function (MGFPROP), which can effectively speed up the convergence rate and improve the global convergence capability of back-propagation. The purpose of MGFPROP is to increase the convergence rate by magnifying the gradient function of the activation function. From the convergence analysis, it is shown that the new algorithm retains the gradient descent property but gives faster convergence than that of the back-propagation algorithm. Simulation results show that, in terms of the convergence rate and the percentage of global convergence, the new algorithm always outperforms the standard back-propagation algorithm and other competing techniques.

A prototype concurrent engineering tool has been developed for the preliminary design of composite topside structures for modern navy warships. This tool, named GELS for the Concurrent engineering of Layered Structures, provides designers with an immediate assessment of the impacts of their decisions on several disciplines which are important to the performance of a modern naval topside structure, including electromagnetic interference effects (EMI), radar cross section (RCS), structural integrity, cost, and weight. Preliminary analysis modules in each of these disciplines are integrated to operate from a common set of design variables and a common materials database. Performance in each discipline and an overall fitness function for the concept are then evaluated. A graphical user interface (GUI) is used to define requirements and to display the results from the technical analysis modules. Optimization techniques, including feasible sequential quadratic programming (FSQP) and exhaustive search are used to modify the design variables to satisfy all requirements simultaneously. The development of this tool, the technical modules, and their integration are discussed noting the decisions and compromises required to develop and integrate the modules into a prototype conceptual design tool.

In this paper we propose an object oriented approach for reusing presynthesized components in VLSI design. Each component object has an interface which hides its internal implementation details and yet allows the operations, performed by the component, to be invoked by sending an appropriate message. A graph based representation scheme has been adopted for capturing necessary interface information. The proposed interface graph can deal with circuits of various complexities. Moreover, the utilization of the interface graph of an object, during its reuse in subsequent synthesis of a new circuit, has been described and illustrated with the help of examples. Lastly, a scheme for extracting the interface graph during synthesis of an object has been proposed.

This paper describes the implementation of transmission-line matrix (TLM) method algorithms on a massively parallel computer (DECmpp 12000), the technique of distributed computing in the UNIX environment, and the combination of TLM analysis with Prony's method as well as with autoregressive moving average (ARMA) digital signal processing for electromagnetic field modelling. by combining these advanced computation techniques, typical electromagnetic field modelling of microwave structures by TLM analysis can be accelerated by a few orders of magnitude.

In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.
