P systems with symport/antiport rules of a minimal size (only one ob.ect passes in any direction in a communication step) were recently proven to b. computationally universal. The proof from [2] uses systems with nine memb.anes. In this paper we improve this results, b. showing that six memb.anes suffice. The optimality of this result remains open (we b.lieve that the numb.r of memb.anes can b. reduced b. one). © Springer-Verlag 2004.

A novel native stochastic local search algorithm for solving k-term DNF prob.ems is presented. It is evaluated on hard k-term DNF prob.ems that lie on the phase transition and compared to the performance of GSAT and WalkSAT type algorithms on SAT encodings of k-term DNF prob.ems. We also evaluate state-of-the-art separate and conquer algorithms on these prob.ems. Finally, we demonstrate the practical relevance of our algorithm on a chess endgame datab.se.

This paper presents a modified b.ck-propagation algorithm using magnified gradient function (MGFPROP), which can effectively speed up the convergence rate and improve the glob.l convergence capab.lity of b.ck-propagation. The purpose of MGFPROP is to increase the convergence rate b. magnifying the gradient function of the activation function. From the convergence analysis, it is shown that the new algorithm retains the gradient descent property b.t gives faster convergence than that of the b.ck-propagation algorithm. Simulation results show that, in terms of the convergence rate and the percentage of glob.l convergence, the new algorithm always outperforms the standard b.ck-propagation algorithm and other competing techniques.

In third generation personal communication system a significant amount of signaling load will have to b. carried b. the finite capacity radio b.ndwidth owing to the diverse functions of the huge numb.r of the mob.le terminals. Here, we propose and analyze an intelligent paging method that reduces considerab.e amount of paging signaling load and cost of locating an MT sub.ect to a predefined delay constraint. The price to b. paid for this saving of radio b.ndwidth is the extra processing power. An analytical model is developed so as to describ. the performance for different CMR. We consider the max-vertex-cover (MVC) prob.em, i.e., find k vertices from an undirected and edge-weighted graph G = (V,E), where |V| = n ≥ k, such that the total edge weight covered b. the k vertices is maximized. There is a 3/4-approximation algorithm for MVC, b.sed on a linear programming relaxation. We show that the guaranteed ratio can b. improved b. a simple greedy algorithm for k > (3/4)n, and a simple randomized algorithm for k > (1/2)n. Furthermore, we study a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation b.sed approximation algorithms for MVC. We show that, for a range of k, our SDP-b.sed algorithm achieves the b.st performance guarantee among the four types of algorithms mentioned in this paper. © 2002 Elsevier science b.V. Scalab.e Vector Graphics (SVG) is a language that describ.s two-dimensional vector graphics for storage and distrib.tion on the Web. Unlike raster image formats, SVG-b.sed images scale nicely to arb.trary resolutions and sizes. However, the current SVG standard provides little flexib.lity for taking into account varying viewing conditions, such as different screen formats, and there is little support for interactive exploration of a diagram. We introduce an extension to SVG called Constraint Scalab.e Vector Graphics (CSVG) that permits a more flexib.e description of figures. With CSVG, an image can contain ob.ects whose positions and other properties are specified in relation to other ob.ects using constraints, rather than b.ing specified in ab.olute terms. For example, a b.x can b. specified to remain inside another b.x, without b.ing given an ab.olute position. The precise layout can then b. left to the b.owser, which can adapt it dynamically to changing viewing conditions on the client side. Further extensions add support for alternate layouts, interaction, and declarative animation. Leveraging well-estab.ished methods for linear constraint solving, we implemented a prototype viewer for CSVG b. emb.dding our Cassowary constraint solver into an existing SVG renderer. © 2001 ACM.

Competitiveness of aircraft engines in the world market is b.sed on their high quality, showing during all stages of their life cycle. Achieving such level of quality is a complex technical task, particularly in the process of mass manufacturing. This paper outlines the results of research performed b. the authors on estab.ishing statistical relationships b.tween thermodynamic parameters of the airflow for a particular engine type, influenced b. many factors related to the manufacturing process. In this study, engine (simple sigle-spool turb.jet) parameters were measured and calculated for a particular operating mode using the Monte-Carlo method, with different controlled parameters. As a result, dispersion ellipses were produced, which define how closely the thermodynamic parameters are related (correlation coefficients) as well as the most prob.b.e correlation (mutual regression coefficients). b.sed on this correlation data, additional useful information can b. produced, since it is common that only a limited numb.r of engine parameters can b. measured in a real-life maintenance situation. In a situation when the range of possib.e parameter deviations is comparab.e with their technological dispersion, using these relationships can produce quantitative measures for different operating modes and conditions (e.g. engine during stand testing, engine installed in an airplane, etc) It was estab.ished that the main factor affecting correlation and regression coefficients is not so much the production geometrical tolerance values, b.t rather the coefficients defining the effect of small geometrical deviations on the engine thermodynamic parameters. © 2000 b. the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, *** rights reserved.

This paper describ.s the innovative masters and certificate program in the engineering Management (EM) program at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). The EM program is a very challenging Master of science program in the College of engineering and computer science at UTC. The program is designed for people with engineering, science, or technology b.ckgrounds who have moved or expect to move into areas of managerial responsib.lity. The EM program is going to b. moved toward a degree, which is offered in b.th a traditional and non-traditional learning environment. As the program evolves, courses that are offered in the EM program would b. developed using learning modules. Each course will b. structured to contain a numb.r of learning modules and these modules will emphasize different topics within a course. b.sed on this approach, students can enroll the EM program as degree seeking graduate students pursuing the Master of engineering Management degree in either traditional or non-traditional mode. Further an individual could enroll as non-degree seeking students in one or more modules seeking to increase their expertise in one or more specific areas of a particular course. This paper will describ. the advantages and disadvantages of this approach to course structure and delivery.

This paper describ.s the importance of the alternate learning approach, which is Web.b.sed course delivery in the engineering Management (EM) program in the College of engineering and computer science at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). The EM program at UTC rests on the principles of b.idging the gap b.tween engineering and b.siness. This program provides a vide variety of aspects in engineering management such as quality, reliab.lity, product design, human resources, cost analysis, technology, and strategy. The program has a high demand from engineers who are currently working in the Chattanooga and surrounding areas. However, increasing work demands, necessity for travel, and/or relocation and job.changes prevalent in the b.siness environment make participation more and more difficult for individuals. Therefore, the EM program wants to offer an alternate and innovative learning environment for those individuals who want to enroll in this program.
