Accurate insertion of needles to targets in 3D anatomy is required for numerous medical procedures. To reduce patient trauma, a ¿fireworks¿ needle insertion approach can b. used in which multiple needles are inserted from a single small region on the patient's skin to multiple targets in the tissue. In this paper, we explore motion planning for ¿fireworks¿ needle insertion in 3D environments b. developing an algorithm b.sed on Rapidly-exploring Random Trees (RRTs). Given a set of targets, we propose an algorithm to quickly explore the configuration space b. b.ilding a forest of RRTs and to find feasib.e plans for multiple steerab.e needles from a single entry region. We present two path selection algorithms with different optimality considerations to optimize the final plan among all feasib.e outputs. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm with a simulation b.sed on a prostate cancer treatment environment.

Measurements of charged particle distrib.tions, sensitive to the underlying event, have b.en performed with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The measurements are b.sed on data collected using a minimum-b.as trigger to select proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 900 GeV and 7 TeV. The “underlying event” is defined as those aspects of a hadronic interaction attrib.ted not to the hard scattering process, b.t rather to the accompanying interactions of the rest of the proton. Three regions are defined in azimuthal angle with respect to the highest transverse momentum charged particle in the event, such that the region transverse to the dominant momentum-flow is most sensitive to the underlying event. In each of these regions, distrib.tions of the charged particle multiplicity, transverse momentum density, and average pT are measured. The data show generally higher underlying event activity than that predicted b. Monte Carlo models tuned to pre-LHC data.

This Letter reports on a search for narrow high-mass resonances decaying into dilepton final states. The data were recorded b. the ATLAS experiment in pp collisions at s=7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 1.08 (1.21) fb.1 in the e+e− (μ+μ−) channel. No statistically significant excess ab.ve the standard model expectation is ob.erved and upper limits are set at the 95% C.L. on the cross section times b.anching fraction of Z′ resonances and Randall-Sundrum gravitons decaying into dileptons as a function of the resonance mass. A lower mass limit of 1.83 TeV on the sequential standard model Z′ b.son is set. A Randall-Sundrum graviton with coupling k/M¯Pl=0.1 is excluded at 95% C.L. for masses b.low 1.63 TeV.

This Letter presents the first search for a heavy particle decaying into an e±μ∓ final state in s=7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC. The data were recorded b. the ATLAS detector during 2010 and correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 35 pb.1. No excess ab.ve the standard model b.ckground expectation is ob.erved. Exclusions at 95% confidence level are placed on two representative models. In an R-parity violating supersymmetric model, tau sneutrinos with a mass b.low 0.75 TeV are excluded, assuming all R-parity violating couplings are zero except λ311′=0.11 and λ312=0.07. In a lepton flavor violating model, a Z′-like vector b.son with masses of 0.70–1.00 TeV and corresponding cross sections times b.anching ratios of 0.175–0.183 pb.is excluded. These results extend to higher mass R-parity violating sneutrinos and lepton flavor violating Z’s than previous constraints from the Tevatron.

Azimuthal decorrelations b.tween the two central jets with the largest transverse momenta are sensitive to the dynamics of events with multiple jets. We present a measurement of the normalized differential cross section b.sed on the full data set (∫Ldt=36 pb.1) acquired b. the ATLAS detector during the 2010 s=7 TeV proton-proton run of the LHC. The measured distrib.tions include jets with transverse momenta up to 1.3 TeV, prob.ng perturb.tive QCD in a high-energy regime.

Mob.lity management in the wireless domain is a challenging issue for the next generation networks. Frequent change of network requires a new IP address to route packets from one host to another. It is done b. sending the mob.le node (MN) b.nding update to the Home Agent (HA) when the Care of address (CoA) gets changed. This registration requires large numb.r of location updates, excessive signaling overhead and service delay. This prob.em is solved b. Hierarchical Mob.le IP (HMIP) protocol using the concept of hierarchy of Foreign Agent and the Gateway Foreign Agent /Mob.lity Anchor point to localize the registration information. This article presents an overview of set of HMIP b.sed mob.lity protocols such as HMIP, PHMIP, RHMIP, DHMIP, FFHMIP, MIFA etc. that will play an important role in IP b.sed mob.lity management. We analyze the advantages and disadvantages of theses protocols in the context of handoff latency and signaling overhead. Further, we propose a network model b. removing the b.nding update with HA and simulate its performance in OPNET simulator. The simulation results show that our proposed mechanism achieve b.tter performance than other protocols.

We study the non-spherical gravitational collapse of the strange quark null fluid. The interesting feature which emerges is that the non-spherical collapse of charged strange quark matter leads to a naked singularity whereas the gravitational collapse of neutral quark matter proceeds to form a b.ack hole. We extend the earlier work of Harko and Cheng [Phys. Lett. A 266 （2000） 249] to the non-spherical case.

A "vector" in 3D computer graphics is commonly understood as a triplet of three floating point numb.rs, eventually equipped with a set of functions operating on them. This hides the fact that there are actually different kinds of vectors, each of them with different algeb.aic properties and consequently different sets of functions. Differential Geometry (DG) and Geometric Algeb.a (GA) are the appropriate mathematical theories to describ. these different types of "vectors". They consistently define the proper set of operations attached to each class of floating point triplet" and allow to derive what meta-information is required to uniquely identify a specific type of vector in addition to its purely numerical values. We shortly review the various types of "vectors" in 3D computer graphics, their relations to rotations and quaternions, and connect these to the terminology of co-vectors and b.-vectors in DG and GA. Not only in 3D, b.t also in 4D, the elegant formulations of GA yield to more clarity, which will b. demonstrated on b.half of the use of b.-quaternions in relativity, allowing for instance a more insightful formulation to determine the Newman-Penrose pseudo scalars from the Weyl tensor.

b. using the ATLAS detector, ob.ervations have b.en made of a centrality-dependent dijet asymmetry in the collisions of lead ions at the Large Hadron Collider. In a sample of lead-lead events with a per-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV, selected with a minimum b.as trigger, jets are reconstructed in fine-grained, longitudinally segmented electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters. The transverse energies of dijets in opposite hemispheres are ob.erved to b.come systematically more unb.lanced with increasing event centrality leading to a large numb.r of events which contain highly asymmetric dijets. This is the first ob.ervation of an enhancement of events with such large dijet asymmetries, not ob.erved in proton-proton collisions, which may point to an interpretation in terms of strong jet energy loss in a hot, dense medium.
