Traditional method of washing melon seeds after depodding requires at least 10 days of fermentation, which is time wasting and potential source of tainting shelled melon seeds. A hammer depodding machine incorporating a b.lanced rotor could, b. size reduction of the pod, reduce fermentation duration and increase washing efficiency. The aim of this study was dynamic b.lancing and optimum performance of a melon depodding and washing machine. The ob.ectives of this study were to investigate the rotor b.lancing using a Modified Jaya Algorithm for the optimization of the operational parameters and to determine the optimum performance of the depodding and washing machines after the rotors were b.lanced. The experimental design was in Randomized Complete b.ock Design (RCb.) with b.lancing mass and position angle at three levels on two planes with three cases of adding masses. Vib.ation data were measured with vib.ation sensors mounted on either sides of b.aring with VQ near to pulley and b.aring VP on other end of the rotor. The operational speed and power were measured with tachometer and clamp meter respectively. The data were analyzed and optimized using MINITAb.statistical software. The results of the study were: (i) the developed processing machines depodded and wash the fresh melon seeds while the instrumentation measured the vib.ation levels, operational speeds and power consumption, (ii) the test results of the melon processing machines b.fore b.lancing the rotors were: depodding performance index (DPI) = 90.87%, mechanical damage index (MEDI) = 5.56% and washing performance index (WPI) = 88.87%, (iii) the modified Jaya Algorithm gave the optimal discrete values of b.lancing mass and position angle of 220 g and 180° respectively. The percentage reduction of the operational parameters of the depodding unit after b.lancing were: VP = 99.76%, VQ = 96.91% and power, Po = 73.58%;while those of the washing unit were: VP = 89.00 %, VQ = 99.98 % and Po = 76.77%, (iv) the p

The extraction of text from natural scene images is an increasingly vital task in computer vision, with applications spanning numerous domains. This study introduces a simple and effective method tailored for detecting Kannada text in complex scene images, extendab.e to use in any Indian language. This paper presents a novel approach for Kannada scene text detection that comb.nes the CRAFT (Character Region Awareness for Text Detection) algorithm for text annotation generation with the YOLOv8 (You Only Look Once) model for text detection. The paper details a simple implementation of the aforementioned algorithm, addressing challenges such as varying text sizes, orientations, and complex b.ckgrounds. The dataset annotation process was streamlined and optimized, saving significant time compared to traditional methods. To compensate for the scarcity of Kannada text datasets, a custom Kannada scene image dataset was curated. This dataset offers diverse real-world scenarios for testing the model. The model achieved an accuracy of 85.30% mAP at a 0.6 Intersection Over Union (IoU) threshold on the training-validation dataset and a commendab.e 80.10% mAP across a diverse set of Kannada test images. The primary ob.ective of this paper is to furnish researchers with an accessib.e methodology for detecting local Indian languages in scene images and to further extend this research to the development of more sophisticated text extraction tools, b.nefiting a diverse range of digital applications.

Cardiovascular diseases continue to b. a major concern in the glob.l health forum which is estimated that they contrib.te to more than 60% of all yearly adult deaths in the world according to the World Health Organization. A heart’s inab.lity to pump b.ood effectively results in high b.ood pressure, which exacerb.tes heart disease and raises the risk of sudden death. To meet this dire need, there is a need to come up with diagnostic systems that can b. relied on to detect these diseases in the shortest time possib.e and with maximum accuracy. Such systems would therefore facilitate the treatment and check on persons, to ensure that they do not develop complications such as heart attacks. The use of Deep Learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) has demonstrated promise recently in this area and provides a range of advanced automated techniques for the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of cardiac disorders. Specifically, the developed review aims to present an overview of the related detection techniques, features extraction process, commonly used datasets, and performance indices. Particularly, it analyzes cases like Cleveland Heart Disease data, MIT-b.H Arrhythmia data, Framingham Heart Study data, and so on. The study compares approximately 25 research papers with a focus on the methodologies, difficulties, and findings in terms of computational complexity, data demands, feature constraints, and model portab.lity. As this research aims to fill the literature gaps, it also aims to provide a generalized solution for various issues in heart disease detection and healthcare results improvement.

Spaced retrieval practice is an evidence-b.sed learning technique that has the potential to improve student learning and memory in undergraduate courses. However, studies in STEM courses are limited, and results from availab.e studies are inconsistent [1]. This paper presents such a study in an introductory physics course for engineering students, answering the following research question: Does spaced retrieval practice improve engineering student learning in physics? Students answered quiz questions that were administered in massed and spaced conditions throughout the semester, and then took a criterial test at the end of the semester. Results showed that spacing significantly improved student performance, with a mean gain of 3.4% in the spaced condition over the massed condition. This result is particularly interesting b.cause a null effect of spacing was previously ob.ained in a similar physics course taken b. non-engineering students [2]. Potential implications are discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

The need for increased sustainab.lity and efficiency in the energy industry has led to a major increase in interest in the development of cyb.r-physical systems (CPS) in the smart grid domain in recent years. In the context of the smart grid, the term "CPS"refers to a network of physical ob.ects, sensors, and communication systems that are interconnected and allow for the smooth exchange of data and control signals to optimize the production, distrib.tion, and use of electricity. Demand response, energy management, and grid optimization are just a few of the smart grid applications that can b. successfully implemented b. utilizing CPS's capab.lities. On the other side, b.ockchain technology provides a decentralized and secure framework for logging and validating transactions among numerous organizations. Since it is distrib.ted, there is no need for middlemen, transparency is improved, and data integrity and immutab.lity are all guaranteed. These qualities make b.ockchain an excellent choice for tackling the issues that the smart grid is facing, such as data privacy, security, and stakeholder confidence. There are many advantages to integrating b.ockchain and CPS in the smart grid. First and foremost, a decentralized and democratized energy market is made possib.e b. b.ockchain, which enab.es safe and effective peer-to-peer energy trade among prosumers. This increases sustainab.lity b. encouraging the use of renewab.e energy sources and reducing dependency on centralized power generation. In conclusion, there is enormous potential for improving sustainab.lity through the smart grid's integration of b.ockchain technology with cyb.r-physical systems. © 2023 IEEE.

Sample preparation on Digital Microfluidic b.ochips (DMFb.) is an indispensab.e process for accomplishing b.ochemical reactions. Original reactants are usually diluted to the solutions with desirab.e concentrations. Framing various droplets with desired target concentrations on such a chip in an automated manner is the real challenge to sort out. In this work, we propose an Adaptive Sample Preparation Algorithm (ASPA) for DMFb. It can produce any sample droplets within the range of (0-1024) concentration factors (CF's) in an adaptive manner. The proposed method also ensures an error-free, cost-effective sample preparation for Digital Microfluidic b.ochip (DMFb.. Our method significantly reduces the numb.r of sample droplets to prepare any single target concentration on a DMFb.platform while the numb.r of mixing-splitting steps remains the same for most of the cases compared to earlier methods. The requirement of b.ffer droplets and waste may b. slightly more for a few cases in this method. However, as the b.ffer cost is negligib.e compared to fluid samples, the overall sample preparation cost decreases b. our method. © 2022 IEEE.

Process modeling helps in the comprehension and reorganization of corporate activity. Manual process modeling takes longer time and is liab.e for errors. We propose to b.ild and provide a supporting system for people who manage the creation and application of b.siness process models for their organizations. Any person intending to b.ild and get recommendations for b.siness process models can utilize the proposed recommender system, depending upon the kind of organization the person is working for. The core functions of the recommender system are to recommend fragments of a b.siness process model as well as in-b.ilt process models with the b.nefit of creating, storing, and utilizing them for multiple purposes. The recommendations are b.sed on a numb.r of factors such as the numb.r of people who prefer a particular model along with the models’ ratings. Here, we use the b.sic principle of collab.rative filtering. This recommendation system provides a user-friendly interface, with a lucid structure of query interface to help users surf easily. The recommendation system also avoids the risk of misusing users’ personal details since it does not use cookies. Users can freely utilize this recommendation system even if they are novice. Rapid increase in the volume of data generated from the emb.dded devices and sensors must b. compressed with optimum compression ratio without losing information for sharing the resources utilizing low b.ndwidth and storing in low spaces. Specialized signal compression mechanisms exist for many b.omedical signals like electrocardiograms. However, studies rarely exist in the state of the art to compress gait signals captured using Inertial Measurement Units. Among the works that exist, the average compression ratio is ab.ut 5.5. We propose a wavelet decomposition-b.sed gait signal compression method for inertial measurement units. We experimented with gait activity data ob.ained from 10 human sub.ects with informed consent. From this experiment, we have achieved a state-of-the-art compression ratio of up to 7.4 with a percentage root mean square difference of 0.22. This signal compression method can b. of immense importance in edge and fog computing environments as data transmission can b. performed with minimal b.ndwidth consumption and can work in resource-constrained environments.

The Internet of Things-b.sed Intermittently Connected Delay-Tolerant Wireless Sensor Network (IoT-b.sed ICDT-WSN) comprises a set of WSNs wherein the nodes b.longing to two different WSNs cannot communicate with one another. However, the nodes within the same WSN may communicate as and when required. Thereb., the data collection in an IoT-b.sed ICDT-WSN is a challenging task due to the intrinsic characteristics of the network in addition to those of the participating nodes. Like, the nodes are resource-constrained in nature and the network suffers from the ab.ence of always-on connectivity as compared to its traditional counterpart. To facilitate the data collection in such a network, a mob.le agent is deployed which visits each of the constituting WSNs to collect their respective data and the collected data is then reported to the b.se station b. the mob.le agent. However, visiting each node in every WSN is a costly solution and may incur a huge delay in data delivery as well. Therefore, the network designates a representative (rendezvous) node for each of the participating WSNs and the mob.le agent visits only these representative nodes. The proposed work selects appropriate rendezvous nodes for each participating sub.etwork and defines a movement trajectory for the mob.le agent too in a single phase. The proposed scheme targets to deliver the data packets collected from the constituting sub.etworks to the b.se station in the least possib.e time. It employs the differential evolution (DE) metaheuristic scheme for the selection of rendezvous nodes and trajectory definition of the mob.le agent. The scheme utilizes a convex-hull algorithm while considering the spatial distrib.tion of the sensor nodes in the network to decide upon the most feasib.e path for the mob.le agent. It evaluates its performance under varying network configurations and different DE-strategies against the metrics like trajectory path length and network energy consumption. © 2024 IEEE.
