Measurement of the inclusive W± and Z/γ* cross sections in the e and μ decay channels in pp collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The production cross sections of the inclusive Drell-Yan processes W±→ℓν and Z/γ*→ℓℓ (ℓ=e, μ) are measured in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector. The cross sections are reported integrated over a fiducial kinematic range, extrapolated to the full range, and also evaluated differentially as a function of the W decay lepton pseudorapidity and the Z boson rapidity, respectively. based on an integrated luminosity of about 35 pb−1 collected in 2010, the precision of these measurements reaches a few percent. The integrated and the differential W± and Z/γ* cross sections in the e and μ channels are combined, and compared with perturbative QCD calculations, based on a number of different parton distribution sets availab.e at next-to-next-to-leading order.

The ATLAS detector is used to search for excited leptons in the electromagnetic radiative decay channel ℓ*→ℓγ. Results are presented based on the analysis of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb−1. No evidence for excited leptons is found, and limits are set on the compositeness scale Λ as a function of the excited lepton mass mℓ*. In the special case where Λ=mℓ*, excited electron and muon masses below 1.87 TeV and 1.75 TeV are excluded at 95% C.L., respectively.

A combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The data sets used correspond to integrated luminosities from 4.6 fb−1 to 4.9 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions collected at s=7 TeV in 2011. The Higgs boson mass ranges of 111.4 GeV to 116.6 GeV, 119.4 GeV to 122.1 GeV, and 129.2 GeV to 541 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level, while the range 120 GeV to 560 GeV is expected to be excluded in the ab.ence of a signal. An excess of events is ob.erved at Higgs boson mass hypotheses around 126 GeV with a local significance of 2.9 standard deviations (σ). The global probability for the background to produce an excess at least as significant anywhere in the entire explored Higgs boson mass range of 110–600 GeV is estimated to be ∼15%, corresponding to a significance of approximately 1σ.

Distributions sensitive to the underlying event are studied in events containing one or more charged-particle jets produced in pp collisions at s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These measurements reflect 800 μb−1 of data taken during 2010. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with radius parameter R varying between 0.2 and 1.0. Distributions of the charged-particle multiplicity, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of charged particles, and the average charged-particle pT are measured as functions of pTjet in regions transverse to and opposite the leading jet for 4 GeVet<100 GeV. In addition, the R dependence of the mean values of these ob.ervab.es is studied. In the transverse region, both the multiplicity and the scalar sum of the transverse momentum at fixed pTjet vary significantly with R, while the average charged-particle transverse momentum has a minimal dependence on R. Predictions from several Monte Carlo tunes have b.en compared to the data; the predictions from Pythia 6, based on tunes that have b.en determined using LHC data, show reasonab.e agreement with the data, including the dependence on R. Comparisons with other generators indicate that additional tuning of soft-QCD parameters is necessary for these generators. The measurements presented here provide a testing ground for further development of the Monte Carlo models.

ATLAS measurements of the properties of jets for boosted particle searches

Measurements are presented of the properties of high transverse momentum jets, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=7 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb−1 and were collected with the ATLAS detector in 2010. Jet mass, width, eccentricity, planar flow and angularity are measured for jets reconstructed using the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0.6 and 1.0, with transverse momentum pT>300 GeV and pseudorapidity |η|<2. The measurements are compared to the expectations of Monte Carlo generators that match leading-logarithmic parton showers to leading-order, or next-to-leading-order, matrix elements. The generators describe the general features of the jets, although discrepancies are ob.erved in some distributions.

This paper describes a measurement of the W boson transverse momentum distribution using ATLAS pp collision data from the 2010 run of the LHC at s=7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 31 pb−1. events form both W→eν and W→μν are used, and the transverse momentum of the W candidates is measured through the energy deposition in the calorimeter from the recoil of the W. The resulting distributions are unfolded to obtain the normalized differential cross sections as a function of the W boson transverse momentum. We present results for pTW<300 GeV in the electron and muon channels as well as for their combination, and compare the combined results to the predictions of perturbative QCD and a selection of event generators.

The ATLAS experiment has measured the production cross section of events with two isolated photons in the final state, in proton-proton collisions at s=7 TeV. The full data set acquired in 2010 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb−1. The background, consisting of hadronic jets and isolated electrons, is estimated with fully data-driven techniques and subtracted. The differential cross sections, as functions of the di-photon mass (mγγ), total transverse momentum (pT,γγ), and azimuthal separation (Δϕγγ), are presented and compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD.

A search is presented for heavy-quark pair production (QQ¯) under the decay hypothesis QQ¯→W+qW−q¯ with q=d, s, b for up-type Q or q=u, c for down-type Q. The search is performed with 1.04 fb−1 of integrated luminosity from pp collisions at s=7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the CeRN LHC. Dilepton final states are selected, requiring large missing transverse momentum and at least two jets. Mass reconstruction of heavy-quark candidates is performed by assuming that the W boson decay products are nearly collinear. The data are in agreement with standard model expectations; a heavy quark with mass less than 350 GeV is excluded at 95% confidence level.

This paper presents a study of the possib.e ordering of charged hadrons in the azimuthal angle relative to the beam axis in high-energy proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A spectral analysis of correlations between longitudinal and transverse components of the momentum of the charged hadrons, driven by the search for phenomena related to the structure of the QCD field, is performed. Data were recorded with the ATLAS detector at center-of-mass energies of s=900 GeV and s=7 TeV. The correlations measured in a kinematic region dominated by low-pT particles are not well described by conventional models of hadron production. The measured spectra show features consistent with the fragmentation of a QCD string represented by a helixlike ordered gluon chain.

This work presents a new inclusive search for supersymmetry (SUSY) by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy s=7 TeV in final states with jets, missing transverse momentum and one or more isolated electrons and/or muons. The search is based on data from the full 2011 data-taking period, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb−1. Single-lepton and multilepton channels are treated together in one analysis. An increase in sensitivity is obtained by simultaneously fitting the number of events in statistically independent signal regions, and the shapes of distributions within those regions. A dedicated signal region is introduced to be sensitive to decay cascades of SUSY particles with small mass differences (“compressed SUSY”). background uncertainties are constrained by fitting to the jet-multiplicity distribution in background control regions. Ob.ervations are consistent with Standard Model expectations, and limits are set or extended on a number of SUSY models.
