This paper shows a successful application of genetic algorithms in computer vision. We aim at building photorealistic 3D models of real-world ob.ects by adding textural information to the geometry. In this paper we focus on the 2D-3D registration prob.em: given a 3D geometric model of an ob.ect, and optical images of the same ob.ect, we need to find the precise alignment of the 2D images to the 3D model. We generalise the photo-consistency approach of Clarkson et al. who assume calibrated cameras, thus only the pose of the ob.ect in the world needs to be estimated. Our method extends this approach to the case of uncalibrated cameras, when both intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters are unknown. We formulate the prob.em as an optimisation and use a genetic algorithm to find a solution. We use semi-synthetic data to study the effects of different parameter settings on the registration. Additionally, experimental results on real data are presented to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.

The major difficulty concerning echocardiograph image processing is speckle noise. In this paper, we present wavelet based algorithm for denoising echocardiograph images and then determine an optimal wavelet filter that yields good quality images. The log transformed input is represented in multiscale wavelet domain. Global hard thresholding of subband coefficients is performed to achieve lossy compression of image. The inverse wavelet transformed image is free from speckle noise. The image quality is assessed in terms of ob.ective and statistical measures, namely, peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), compression ratio, variance, mean square error (MSe). The experiments are performed using different wavelets at various levels of decomposition. The results show that bior6.8 with 2- level decomposition yields better quality despeckled images.

Crossed-magnetic-field effects on bulk high-temperature superconductors have b.en studied both experimentally and numerically. The sample geometry investigated involves finite-size effects along both (crossed-)magnetic-field directions. The experiments were carried out on bulk melt-processed Y-ba-Cu-O single domains that had b.en premagnetized with the applied field parallel to their shortest direction (i.e., the c axis) and then sub.ected to several cycles of the application of a transverse magnetic field parallel to the sample ab plane. The magnetic properties were measured using orthogonal pickup coils, a Hall probe placed against the sample surface, and magneto-optical imaging. We show that all principal features of the experimental data can be reproduced qualitatively using a two-dimensional finite-element numerical model based on an e−J power law and in which the current density flows perpendicularly to the plane within which the two components of magnetic field are varied. The results of this study suggest that the suppression of the magnetic moment under the action of a transverse field can be predicted successfully by ignoring the existence of flux-free configurations or flux-cutting effects. These investigations show that the ob.erved decay in magnetization results from the intricate modification of current distribution within the sample cross section. The current amplitude is altered significantly only if a field-dependent critical current density Jc(b) is assumed. Our model is shown to be quite appropriate to describe the cross-flow effects in bulk superconductors. It is also shown that this model does not predict any saturation of the magnetic induction, even after a large number (∼100) of transverse field cycles. These features are shown to be consistent with the experimental data.

To be correctly mastered, brain-computer interfaces (bCIs) need an uninterrupted flow of feedback to the user. This feedback is usually delivered through the visual channel. Our aim was to explore the benefits of vibrotactile feedback during users' training and control of eeG-based bCI applications. A protocol for delivering vibrotactile feedback, including specific hardware and software arrangements, was specified. In three studies with 33 sub.ects (including 3 with spinal cord injury), we compared vibrotactile and visual feedback, addressing: (I) the feasibility of sub.ects' training to master their eeG rhythms using tactile feedback;(II) the compatibility of this form of feedback in presence of a visual distracter;(III) the performance in presence of a complex visual task on the same (visual) or different (tactile) sensory channel. The stimulation protocol we developed supports a general usage of the tactors;preliminary experimentations. All studies indicated that the vibrotactile channel can function as a valuab.e feedback modality with reliability comparab.e to the classical visual feedback. Advantages of using a vibrotactile feedback emerged when the visual channel was highly loaded by a complex task. In all experiments, vibrotactile feedback felt, after some training, more natural for both controls and SCI users.

The goal of P300 wave detection is to extract relevant features from the huge number of electrical signals and to detect the P300 component accurately. This paper introduces a modified approach to P300 wave detection combined with an application of rough set methods and non-rough set based methods to classify P300 signals. The modifications include an averaging method using Mexican hat wavelet coefficients to extract features of signals. The data set has b.en expanded to include signals from six words and a total of 3960 ob.ects. experiments with a variety of classifiers were performed. The signal data analysis includes comparisons of error rates, true positives and false negatives performed using a paired t-test. It has b.en found that the false negatives are better indicators of efficacy of the feature extraction method rather than error rate due to the nature of the signal data. The contribution of this paper is an in-depth study P300 wave detection using a modified averaging method for feature extraction together with rough set-based classification on an expanded data set. © Springer-Verlag berlin Heidelberg 2006.

The present work adopts an approach to build ontologies, which assist achieving interoperability among semantically heterogeneous learning ob.ects and learners, and focuses on building ontologies of learning ob.ects, particularly course outlines. The ontology is implemented using the Rule Markup Language (RuleML), an XML-based standard. A RuleML representation allows the ontology to be flexib.e, extensib.e and platform-independent. The ontology can be reused and integrated with other ontologies, and is easily converted to other XML-based languages (such as RDF and OWL) and even incorporated with existing XML-based repositories (such as Ieee LOM and CanLOM) using XSL Transformations. A small implemented example of the application of XSL Transformations to build the RuleML-based ontology is presented as a proof of concept.

Modern hardware development bases on high-level methods with appropriate tool support. SystemC, a C++ class library, provides a high-level interface to model and simulate hardware designs on different levels. Unfortunately, there is no graphical interface included for demonstration, debugging, or educational purposes. gSysC presented here forms a GUI for SystemC. It allows the programmer to watch the interaction of the simulated design parts and provides additional run-time control features such as single-step simulation or b.eakpoints. The application of gSysC to SystemC models is demonstrated using some examples. Further on, the overhead of gSysC applied to a selection of the example designs is measured and compared to the model complexity. © 2006, UK Simulation Society. All rights reserved.

In this paper, we proposed dynamic co-allocation schemes for parallel data transfer in a grid environment, which copes up with highly inconsistent network performances of the servers. We have developed an algorithm using circular queue, with which, the data transfer tasks are allocated onto the servers in duplication. It is further improved to maintain the ordered delivery of data blocks, to suit such applications, like streaming. The schemes nicely tackle even when the link to servers under consideration is broken or become idle. We used Globus toolkit for our framework and utilized the partial copy feature of GridFTP. We compared our schemes with the existing schemes and the preliminary results show notab.e improvement in overall completion time of data transfer.

This paper presents a SVM based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for the characterization of clustered microcalcifications in digitized mammograms. First, the region of interest (ROI) in mammogram is enhanced using morphological enhancement (MORPHeN) method. Second, pixels in potential microcalcification regions are segmented out by using edge detection and morphological operations. Third, features based on shape, texture and statistical properties are extracted from each region. Finally, these features are fed to a SVM based classifier for identifying the clusters as either benign or malignant. The SVM with RbF kernel gave A z =0.9803 with 97% accuracy and the SVM with polynomial kernel gave A z =0.9541 with 95% accuracy
