A search is presented for new particles in an extension to the Standard Model that includes a heavy Higgs boson (H0), an intermediate charged Higgs-boson pair (H±), and a light Higgs boson (h0). The analysis searches for events involving the production of a single heavy neutral Higgs boson which decays to the charged Higgs boson and a W boson, where the charged Higgs boson subsequently decays into a W boson and the lightest neutral Higgs boson decaying to a bottom–antibottom-quark pair. Such a cascade results in a W-boson pair and a bottom–antibottom-quark pair in the final state. Events with exactly one lepton, missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets are selected from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1, collected by the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV at the LHC. The data are found to be consistent with Standard Model predictions, and 95% confidence-level upper limits are set on the product of cross section and branching ratio. These limits range from 0.065 to 43 pb as a function of H0 and H± masses, with mh0 fixed at 125 GeV.

An improved measurement of the mass of the Higgs boson is derived from a combined fit to the reconstructed invariant mass spectra of the decay channels H→γγ and H→ZZ*→4ℓ. The analysis uses the pp collision data sample recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb−1. The measured value of the Higgs boson mass is mH=125.36±0.37(stat)±0.18(syst) GeV. This result is based on improved energy-scale calibrations for photons, electrons, and muons as well as other analysis improvements, and supersedes the previous result from ATLAS. Upper limits on the total width of the Higgs boson are derived from fits to the invariant mass spectra of the H→γγ and H→ZZ*→4ℓ decay channels.

It is a common experience to the web users with the existing search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Ask, e.t.c., that the information related to the entered query returns a long ranked list of results (snippets). It becomes cumbersome to the user to go through each title, snippet and even sometimes link of the search results until relevant results are found to the query. Clustering of search results is a special technique in data mining using which the retrieved results are organized into meaningful groups enlightening the user work. This paper deals with the generalized Suffix tree based clustering approach. The most repeated phrase in the document tags is considered as cluster name. Thus in short, web search results that are fetched from the prevailing web search engines grouped under phrases that contain one or more search keywords. This paper aims at organizing web search results into clusters facilitating quick browsing options to the browser providing an excellent interface to results precisely. Suffix tree clustering produces comparatively more accurate and informative grouped results. A basic problem during image searching in any search engine is Image Repetition. This can be avoided by using the L-Point Comparison algorithm, a specially worked out technique in field of Information Retrieval systems, is also discussed with a practical example. © 2011 IEEE.

A measurement of the production processes of the recently discovered Higgs boson is performed in the two-photon final state using 4.5 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions data at s=7 TeV and 20.3 fb−1 at s=8 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The number of observed Higgs boson decays to diphotons divided by the corresponding Standard Model prediction, called the signal strength, is found to be μ=1.17±0.27 at the value of the Higgs boson mass measured by ATLAS, mH=125.4 GeV. The analysis is optimized to measure the signal strengths for individual Higgs boson production processes at this value of mH. They are found to be μggF=1.32±0.38, μVbF=0.8±0.7, μWH=1.0±1.6, μZH=0.1−0.1+3.7, and μtt¯H=1.6−1.8+2.7, for Higgs boson production through gluon fusion, vector-boson fusion, and in association with a W or Z boson or a top-quark pair, respectively. Compared with the previously published ATLAS analysis, the results reported here also benefit from a new energy calibration procedure for photons and the subsequent reduction of the systematic uncertainty on the diphoton mass resolution. No significant deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model are found.

A search has been performed, using the full 20.3 fb−1 data sample of 8 TeV proton-proton collisions collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, for photons originating from a displaced vertex due to the decay of a neutral long-lived particle into a photon and an invisible particle. The analysis investigates the diphoton plus missing transverse momentum final state, and is therefore most sensitive to pair production of long-lived particles. The analysis technique exploits the capabilities of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter to make precise measurements of the flight direction, as well as the time of flight, of photons. No excess is observed over the Standard Model predictions for background. Exclusion limits are set within the context of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models, with the lightest neutralino being the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and decaying into a photon and gravitino with a lifetime in the range from 250 ps to about 100 ns.

A search is presented for production of dark-matter particles recoiling against a leptonically decaying Z boson in 20.3 fb−1 of pp collisions at s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with large missing transverse momentum and two oppositely charged electrons or muons consistent with the decay of a Z boson are analyzed. No excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed. Limits are set on the mass scale of the contact interaction as a function of the dark-matter particle mass using an effective field theory description of the interaction of dark matter with quarks or with Z bosons. Limits are also set on the coupling and mediator mass of a model in which the interaction is mediated by a scalar particle.

A measurement of event-plane correlations involving two or three event planes of different order is presented as a function of centrality for 7 μb−1 Pb+Pb collision data at sNN=2.76 TeV, recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Fourteen correlators are measured using a standard event-plane method and a scalar-product method, and the latter method is found to give a systematically larger correlation signal. Several different trends in the centrality dependence of these correlators are observed. These trends are not reproduced by predictions based on the Glauber model, which includes only the correlations from the collision geometry in the initial state. Calculations that include the final-state collective dynamics are able to describe qualitatively, and in some cases also quantitatively, the centrality dependence of the measured correlators. These observations suggest that both the fluctuations in the initial geometry and the nonlinear mixing between different harmonics in the final state are important for creating these correlations in momentum space.

Although Modeling and Simulation is successfully applied for several decades, the community only established a handful of M&S specific standards. Although the standards were applied enabling worldwide distributed simulation applications, in particular in the training application domain of military simulation systems, the general success of M&S standard efforts and their potential for general applicability has been debated repeatedly during several conferences and workshop. This collection of position statements discusses related questions, such as, "What makes M&S special that we need M&S standards," "Are M&S standards truly different from Software engineering Standards," and "What metrics can be used to measure M&S standard success," and tries to contribute to establishing a methodological approach to identify future M&S standard needs. These position statements have been contributed in preparation of a panel discussion and edited for the supporting proceedings. © 2011 IEEE.
