Federated feature selection (FFS) is a promising field for selecting informative features while preserving data privacy in federated learning (FL) settings. Existing FFS methods focus on capturing the correlations between features and labels. They struggle to achieve satisfactory performance in the face of data distribution heterogeneity among FL clients, and cannot address the out-of-distribution (OOD) problem that arises when a significant portion of clients do not actively participate in FL training. To address these limitations, we propose Federated Causally Invariant Feature Learning (FedCIFL), a novel approach for learning causally invariant features in a privacy-preserving manner. We design a sample reweighting strategy to eliminate spurious correlations introduced by selection bias and iteratively estimate the federated causal effect between each feature and the labels (with the remaining features initially treated as confounders). By iteratively refining the confounding feature set to identify the true confounders, FedCIFL mitigates the impact of limited local data on the accuracy of federated causal effect estimation. Theoretical analysis proves the correctness of FedCIFL under reasonable assumptions. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of FedCIFL against eight state-of-the-art baselines, beating the best-performing approach by 3.19%, 9.07% and 2.65% in terms of average test Accuracy, RMSE and F1 score, respectively. Physical Layer Covert Communication in B5G Wireless Networks - its Research, Applications, and Challenges

Physical layer covert communication is a crucial secure communication technology that enables a transmitter to convey information covertly to a recipient without being detected by adversaries. Unlike typical cryptography and physical layer security systems that concentrate on protecting the sent signal content, covert communications seek to conceal the existence of legitimate transmission. Thus, with beyond fifth-generation (B5G) wireless communications, covert communications can operate in tandem or as a supplement to conventional security techniques. We provide an extensive overview of the basic theories and several strategies in physical layer covert communications in this article. In particular, we go into great detail about the basic theories of physical layer covert communications, such as channel models, codes, secret keys, and covertness metrics, as well as various covert schemes in progressively more complicated scenarios, such as covert communications in single-antenna and multiantenna three-node systems and covert communications in jammer- and relay-aided systems. In addition, we identify the challenges and future directions for research on covert communications in B5G wireless networks. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

We consider a communication system consisting of a server that tracks and publishes updates about a time-varying data source or event, and a gossip network of users interested in closely tracking the event. The timeliness of the information is measured through the version age of information. The users wish to have their expected version ages remain below a threshold, and have the option to either rely on gossip from their neighbors or subscribe to the server directly to follow updates about the event if the former option does not meet the timeliness requirements. The server wishes to maximize its profit by increasing the number of subscribers and reducing costs associated with the frequent sampling of the event. We model the problem setup as a Stackelberg game between the server and the users, where the server commits to a frequency of sampling the event, and the users make decisions on whether to subscribe or not. As an initial work, we focus on directed networks with unidirectional flow of information and obtain the optimal equilibrium strategies for all the players. We provide simulation results to confirm the theoretical findings and provide additional insights. © 2024 IEEE.

A 1.65 to 1.84 GHz Filtering SPDT Switch With Fully Tunable Insertion Phase Using NRN and Mixed Electromagnetic Coupling Techniques

This brief presents a novel filtering single-pole-double-throw (SPDT) switch with continuously tunable center frequency and insertion phase. It is comprised of six varactor-loaded microstrip resonators and three tunable non-resonating nodes (NRNs) at source and loads. The controllable mixed electromagnetic couplings are introduced on the two main paths of each channel of the switch. At ON-state, the designed filtering switch can generate a 4th-order bandpass filtering performance with high selectivity, and the insertion phase can be continuously tuned with a full 360° tuning range by changing the reactances of NRNs and switching the dominated modes of the mixed couplings. At OFF-state, the mixed electromagnetic couplings are set to zero, and hence high isolation can be realized. To validate the proposed technique, a circuit prototype is designed and fabricated. The measured results suggest that the designed filtering SPDT switch can operate with a tunable center frequency ranging from 1.65 GHz to 1.84 GHz, and its insertion phase at ON-state channel can be continuously tuned from -180° to 180°. During the whole tuning process, the measured in-band isolation for OFF-state channel keeps better than 40 dB. © 2023 IEEE.

The use of TD-learning has been widely employed in reinforcement learning algorithms due to its efficiency and practicality. Herein, we study the convergence of a variant of Monte Carlo Exploring Starts when operatornameTD(λ) is used in policy evaluation and policy improvement, and lookahead is used in the policy improvement step. Our results provide a threshold for the amount of lookahead that ensures convergence of Monte Carlo Exploring Starts with T D(λ) as a function of λ in[0,1]. © 2024 IEEE.

Direct policy search has been widely applied in modern reinforcement learning and continuous control. However, the theoretical properties of direct policy search on nonsmooth robust control synthesis have not been fully understood. The optimal H1 control framework aims at designing a policy to minimize the closed-loop H1 norm, and is arguably the most fundamental robust control paradigm. In this work, we show that direct policy search is guaranteed to find the global solution of the robust H1 state-feedback control design problem. Notice that policy search for optimal H1 control leads to a constrained nonconvex nonsmooth optimization problem, where the nonconvex feasible set consists of all the policies stabilizing the closed-loop dynamics. We show that for this nonsmooth optimization problem, all Clarke stationary points are global minimum. Next, we identify the coerciveness of the closed-loop H1 objective function, and prove that all the sublevel sets of the resultant policy search problem are compact. Based on these properties, we show that Goldstein* subgradient method and its implementable variants can be guaranteed to stay in the nonconvex feasible set and eventually find the global optimal solution of the H1 state-feedback synthesis problem. Our work builds a new connection between nonconvex nonsmooth optimization theory and robust control, leading to an interesting global convergence result for direct policy search on optimal H1 synthesis. © 2022 Neural information processing systems foundation. Gallium Nitride High Electron Mobility Transistors have garnered attention as promising solutions for high-power and high-frequency applications, attributed to their exceptional features such as high electron mobility, high breakdown voltage, and wide bandgap. However, the efficacy of GaN HEMTs is challenged by some restrictive phenomena, notably self-heating and thermal effects. This paper presents experimental results from DC analysis conducted on different GaN HEMT devices featuring various numbers of fingers, alongside an examination of the thermal impact on device performance. The correlation between finger count in multi-finger HEMTs and device performance is explored, followed by a discussion on mitigation strategies aimed at optimizing device design and structures to address these challenges. © 2024 IEEE.
