The paper deals with theoretical and applicative aspects concerning two extensions of the Symmetrical Optimum method (SO-m) for controller tuning in speed and position control of mechatronics systems. The methods, introduced by the authors and called Extended form of the Symmetrical Optimum method (ESO-m) and Double parameterization of the Symmetrical Optimum method (2p-SO-m), are briefly presented and some approaches regarding the methods are highlighted. Due to the applicability of the methods in the field of mechatronics applications (speed and positioning control of rapid plants), the presented aspects are of permanent actuality. © 2011 IEEE.

The two-wheeled inverted pendulum (WIP) is an unstable nonlinear system used in industrial and academic applications. Two control methods for WIP-based self-balancing robot are developed, implemented in Matlab-Simulink and tested by simulation with good results. These methods are: i) LQR control with state observer to stabilize the pendulum vertical-angle and to track a desired motion trajectory, and ii) PID control for vertical-angle stabilization. An experimental prototype of WIP self-balancing robot with only the PID vertical-angle control is designed, implemented, and experimental tested on surfaces with different friction coefficients, proving good vertical-angle stabilization. © 2022 IEEE.

The paper gives 2-DOF speed control solutions for BLDC-m drives with focus on design methodologies for servo systems. A classical 2-DOF structure and two variants of 2-DOF PI(D) control structures are briefly presented and some approaches regarding the methods are highlighted. A comparative study and case study with digital simulation results are included to exemplify the design methodologies. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper develops a control system for a drum-boiler unit, which employs a three element cascade control (water level, steam flow, feed-water) versus a single element control for the water level loop, in order to attenuate the non-minimum phase shrink-and-swell effect. The overall control structure includes a heat flux control loop for throttle pressure stabilization. Gain scheduling technique is added to improve system responses at various operating points. The process is built around the Åström-Bell non-linear complex drum-boiler model fitted for a real 16 MW thermal power plant. The model is extended with actuators, super-heater and turbine dynamics. The implementation is carried out in Labview, employing a graphical user interface (GUI) for friendly man machine interaction with selection of manual/automatic mode. The simulation results are focused on manual/automatic control operation with satisfactory response behaviors. © 2011 HTE.

This paper introduces a robust sensorless control system for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives using the active flux observer with serial combined PMSM voltage and current models. To assure system robustness, the stator resistance identification is proposed using a MRAS with the stator current angle error in adaptation mechanism. The extensive simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed sensorless control system with very good steady state and dynamic performance in large speed range 1:50, with minimum speed of 20 rpm (2% rated speed) and 1°max rotor position error, for step speed and rated torque references, step speed reversal at lower speed, and linear variation of stator resistance. © 2022 IEEE.

Long distance teleoperation formulates a current control problem task yet to be solved, primarily due to the difficulty to compensate for signal latency. Predictive and modelbased control can only give satisfying results if proper description of the system's behavior is provided. The interdisciplinary field of telesurgery has become a focal point of technologyextended medicine, where master-slave type control over large distances poses significant challenges. Innovative solutions are required to deal with the modeling human teleoperation and varying communication quality parameters. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility a more straight-forward, classical control solution based on Kessler's Extended Symmetrical Method, formulated in a cascade control approach to tackle the problems caused by latency and uncertainties in a modeled telesurgical robot system. © 2011 IFAC.

This paper proposes a platform that allows the users to transparently interconnect instances of the software audio signal processing engine without the need of a custom implemented data transport hardware. The platform is focused on distributing the signal processing across different computers in order to increase the overall quality of the signal processing and/or to ensure a more convenient sound reproduction distribution. The design aims to the use of this platform for software audio signal processing in cost-effective audiophile loudspeaker systems or for professional use in stage audio reproduction distribution and management, taking full advantage of the new personal computer hardware products. © 2011 IEEE.

Shop-floor scheduling is one of the most complex problems in holonic manufacturing systems as it deals with unpredictable scenarios and overlapping requirements. The scheduling problem is considered to be a NP-hard problem and only near optimal solutions can be obtained. A solution for this problem can be formulated only by employing meta-heuristic class algorithm. This paper discusses the scheduling problem in heterachical operating mode, focusing on solving the local horizon problem. A distributed genetic algorithm is introduced, that uses the local operation plan to generate the initial solution population. The initial population is then evolved based on global optimum soft conditions until the acceptable solution fitness is achieved. The soft conditions considered at global horizon layer are energy footprint, resource utilization and supply chain optimization for resource stocks. The paper describes the data structures used to model this logic and describes in detail the genetic algorithm evolution mechanism. Experimental results are discussed in the context of a pilot production line consisting of six universal resources and a conveyor belt processing two parallel customer orders. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper presents an integration model for designing manufacturing systems using the concept of manufacturing service bus. The manufacturing service bus (MSB) provides a uniform communication framework at the shop floor layer, integrating all components involved. The main characteristics of the MSB integration layer together with the advantages and requirements of the software products used in this model are discussed. The overall architectural goal of this integration model is to assure a very low coupling between the modules at the shop floor level, providing a high degree of flexibility for the manufacturing enterprises. Physical resources as production line robots, conveyors and existing transportation paths, scheduling algorithms can be plugged in and out without or with a very low impact on the entire system functionality. Another important aspect of this design is that it provides elasticity through a dynamic queued communication model, allowing a seamless scaling capability at the shop floor level. © 2012 IFAC.

The interest in ensuring optimal growth climate conditions is sustained by the increasing demand in greenhouse products, which in turn, leads to an increasing demand of high efficiency greenhouse control systems. The greenhouse climate control is complex due to the high nonlinear interaction between the biological subsystem and the physical subsystem, and due to strong coupling of the two main controlled variables: temperature and humidity. In this context, the paper presents an equivalent greenhouse climate model based on feedback-feedforward compensation technique responsible for linearization, decoupling and disturbance compensation of the greenhouse complex model. Based on this equivalent model reduced to integral plus dead time decoupled processes, a comparison study of associated PI/PID controllers employing different tuning techniques is performed by simulation. © 2012 Dunarea de Jos University.
