Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. Genetic programming hyperheuristic (GPHH) has recently become a promising methodology for large-scale dynamic path planning (LDPP) since it can produce reusable heuristics rather than disposable solutions. However, in this methodology, the extracted local and decentralized heuristic for agents that lack a global systemic view sometimes may be problematic. Therefore, a new challenge is to strike a balance between conciseness to improve generalization ability and incorporation of more global information to obtain better performance. In this work, we target the LDPP problem and propose a communication learning mechanism (ComLGP) for GPHH to address the above difficulties. In ComLGP, a communication function is introduced to serve as a communication protocol and exist in the form of an extra terminal in GPHH. Compared to the classic terminals which are fixed in genetic programing, this communication function undergoes optimization along with the evolutionary process of GPHH. In this way, the communication function can be learned which enables agents to communicate without a predefined communication protocol. Then, a caching and lazy updating mechanism for ComLGP is presented to accelerate the calculation of communication content. Last, we verified our method on 22 scenarios including two real world road networks. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ComLGP can successfully learn to communicate. Although in the absence of any manually designed communication features, ComLGP is capable of achieving performance competitive to the state-of-the-art method that employs a predefined communication protocol and outperforms the remaining compared methods in most scenarios. © 2020 IEEE.

AKDC: Ambiguous Kernel Distance Clustering Algorithm for COVID-19 CT Scans Analysis

Conventional soft clustering algorithms perform well on linearly distributed features, but their performance degrades on nonlinearly distributed features in high-dimensional space. In this study, a novel soft clustering algorithm, the ambiguous kernel distance clustering (AKDC) algorithm, is presented. This algorithm is developed by applying ambiguous set theory and the Gaussian kernel function. The ambiguous set theory defines the ambiguities inherent in each feature with four membership values: 1) true;2) false;3) true-ambiguous;and 4) false-ambiguous. The degree of membership values here forms a low-dimensional feature space that is not linearly distributed. Therefore, these nonlinearly distributed membership values are mapped into a high-dimensional feature space using the Gaussian kernel function. This study focuses on performing cluster analysis of computerized tomography scans of COVID-19 (CTSC-19) cases using AKDC. COVID-19, recognized as one of the most life-threatening diseases of this century, is highly contagious, and early diagnosis may prevent one-to-one transmission. Extensive empirical studies have been conducted with different types of CTSC-19 to demonstrate its effectiveness against existing kernel-based clustering and nonkernel-based clustering algorithms, namely mercer kernel fuzzy c-mean (MKFCM), kernel generalized FCM (KGFCM), kernel intuitionistic fuzzy entropy c-means (KIFECMs), morphological reconstruction and membership filtering clustering (FRFCM), and intuitionistic FCM based on membership information transferring and similarity measurements (IFCM-MS). The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared to the existing algorithms is evaluated using standard statistical metrics, such as dice index (DI), Jaccard index (JI), structural similarity index (SI), and correlation coefficient (CC). The empirical results show that AKDC is more effective than existing algorithms based on DI, JI, SI, and CC. © 2013 IEEE.

The emergence of financial technology (FinTech) has transformed the financial sector, introducing a new era characterized by state-of-the-art technologies that enhance speed, affordability, and accessibility. The proliferation of the internet and smartphones has further accelerated this transformation, fostering greater connectivity and global interaction. Subsequently, these advancements have significantly expanded financial inclusion, ensuring access to financial services for previously under-served populations. While the rise of FinTech has propelled financial inclusion for many, individuals with disabilities have not experienced commensurate improvements in their financial accessibility. As the banking sector increasingly migrates to online platforms, people with disabilities encounter barriers stemming from inaccessible websites, mobile applications, and online banking services. This paper introduces a specialized UPI payment application designed explicitly for individuals with disabilities. The objective is to integrate this underserved demographic into the digital financial landscape, fostering financial inclusion and enhancing access to essential financial services.

The ongoing global challenges of infectious diseases, particularly COVID-19, highlight the critical need for accurate and timely diagnostic tools. Rapid antigen test kits have become essential for swiftly detecting COVID-19 infections, enabling healthcare professionals to make prompt decisions based on quick results. Due to their complexity and the potential impact on public health, these kits require thorough validation. This paper presents a novel formal verification approach using predicate logic and state transition tables to validate the performance of COVIFIND COVID-19 antigen self-test kit. The proposed methodology encompasses sensitivity, specificity, and operational parameters, incorporating logical formulae and state transition rules to describe and verify test states and transitions. The frame-work has been applied to various test components, including sample pads, conjugate pads, and control lines, demonstrating its effectiveness in maintaining adherence to specified requirements and performance standards. The results affirm the robustness of the COVIFIND test kit in providing reliable results across diverse conditions. This work enhances the quality assurance processes for rapid diagnostic tests, lays the groundwork for further development, and is crucial for maintaining high standards in public health diagnostics.

Logs are important in modern software development with runtime information. Log parsing is the first step in many log-based analyses, that involve extracting structured information from unstructured log data. Traditional log parsers face challenges in accurately parsing logs due to the diversity of log formats, which directly impacts the performance of downstream log-analysis tasks. In this paper, we explore the potential of using Large Language Models (LLMs) for log parsing and propose LLMParser, an LLM-based log parser based on generative LLMs and few-shot tuning. We leverage four LLMs, Flan-T5-small, Flan-T5-base, LLaMA-7B, and ChatGLM-6B in LLMParsers. Our evaluation of 16 open-source systems shows that LLMParser achieves statistically significantly higher parsing accuracy than state-of-the-art parsers (a 96% average parsing accuracy). We further conduct a comprehensive empirical analysis on the effect of training size, model size, and pre-training LLM on log parsing accuracy. We find that smaller LLMs may be more effective than more complex LLMs;for instance where Flan-T5-base achieves comparable results as LLaMA-7B with a shorter inference time. We also find that using LLMs pre-trained using logs from other systems does not always improve parsing accuracy. While using pre-trained Flan-T5-base shows an improvement in accuracy, pre-trained LLaMA results in a decrease (decrease by almost 55% in group accuracy). In short, our study provides empirical evidence for using LLMs for log parsing and highlights the limitations and future research direction of LLM-based log parsers. © 2024 ACM.

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit impressive natural language capabilities but suffer from hallucination - generating content ungrounded in the realities of training data. Recent work has focused on decoding techniques to improve factuality during inference by leveraging LLMs' hierarchical representation of factual knowledge, manipulating the predicted distributions at inference time. Current state-of-the-art approaches refine decoding by contrasting early-exit distributions from a lower layer with the final layer to exploit information related to factuality within the model forward procedure. However, such methods often assume that the final layer is the most reliable and the lower-layer selection process depends on it. In this work, we first propose the extrapolation of critical token probabilities beyond the last layer for more accurate contrasting. We additionally employ layer-wise entropy-guided lower-layer selection, decoupling the selection process from the final layer. Experiments demonstrate strong performance, surpassing state-of-the-art on multiple different datasets by large margins. The analyzes show that different kinds of prompt respond to different selection strategies. Our source code will be available on GitHub. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Oral cancer primarily affects the oral chamber within the head and neck area, and underscores the critical need for effective classification to initiate timely treatment. Deep learning (DL)-based computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems have demonstrated notable success in various applications, offering accurate and prompt diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). One of the challenges in biomedical image classification is the acquisition of a sufficiently large training dataset. Transfer learning presents an efficient solution by extracting general features from natural image datasets and adapting them to new image datasets. In this study, we focus on classifying OSCC histopathology images to develop a productive DL-based CAD solution. To this end, we employ an average weighted ensemble technique, harnessing the strengths of deep learning-based models. To address the limitation of a small dataset, we fine-tune pre-trained deep CNN models, specifically VGG-16, VGG-19, MobileNet-V2, and Inception-V3, within our proposed method. Additionally, we conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of these models, considering classification accuracy, precision, recall, and F-score as metrics. Our experimental findings reveal that VGG-19 consistently delivers substantially superior performance compared to the other fine-tuned deep CNN models. However, our proposed weighted ensemble technique outperforms all these deep CNN models, particularly when employing the RMSProp optimizer. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
