Finding effective learning tools to cultivate and establish students’ confidence and interest in professional learning has always been a challenge for both teachers and students, particularly when teachers face first-year students with varying levels of prior knowledge. This study explores whether using generative AI drawing systems as an auxiliary learning tool can alleviate these challenges and enhance students’ positive learning experiences. The study focuses on the compulsory first-year course "Introduction to Design" in a design department, incorporating a generative AI drawing system into the creative process. This system serves as a shape database and provides design suggestions to creators, who then modify their designs and proceed with implementation. The study examines whether the inclusion of this auxiliary tool enables students’ works to meet the course’s design requirements, followed by a survey to gather feedback on the learning experience. The study yields the following findings: 1. The AI generative drawing system can serve as a database of design materials, offering initial visual design suggestions to designers. However, the depth and breadth of the operator’s understanding of the topic and their professional knowledge impact the outcomes. 2. The AI generative drawing system cannot replace current design work;the realization of designs still requires professional designers. 3. Using the AI generative drawing system as an aid in the creative process can reduce feelings of frustration and anxiety in design learning, helping students maintain a positive learning attitude. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

The rapid advancement of technology has prompted significant changes in the design of high-tech products, transitioning from physical operation interfaces to virtual interfaces, such as touch screens. This study focuses on the operation interface of automotive control panels and investigates the differences in kansei evaluation and user preferences between physical and virtual interfaces. Through kansei evaluations and eye-tracking experiments, participants’ subjective evaluations and visual attention patterns towards both interface types are analyzed. The findings indicate that participants’ attention is primarily directed towards the control panel interface and the steering wheel, highlighting the considerable impact of these designs on kansei evaluations. Furthermore, the control panel interface receives a greater number of visual fixations compared to the steering wheel, indicating users’ heightened visual focus on this area. Additionally, the position and size of the screen significantly influence the distribution of participants’ visual attention, with vertical or large screens attracting more gaze. This research contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the kansei differences during the transition from physical to virtual interfaces. The findings provide valuable insights for interface design research and offer practical design recommendations for automotive control panel interfaces. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Low power consumption detectors for mmWave massive MU-MIMO-GFDM systems

The International Mobile Telecommunications-2020 (IMT-2020) specifies the data rates for enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) is approximately 10 Gb/s. Millimetre-wave (mmWave) has a vast spectrum and can be used with only slight authorisation, making it an ideal solution for eMBB. This paper proposes optimal detectors with low cost, low power consumption, and low complexity for mmWave massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) communication. The mmWave broadband communication faces many challenges in system implementation. One of the challenges of mmWave broadband systems is using the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) in the receiver. The ADC power consumption will significantly increase with the frequency bandwidth. The ADC power consumption will also considerably increase with the bit number used in the conversion simultaneously. The mmWave broadband communication also challenges the cost of transmitters, especially wideband linear amplifiers are costly. Hence, it is necessary to transmit a signal with a low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) to relax the linearity of the power amplifier. The radio-frequency (RF) port connects to two high-precision ADCs in conventional MIMO systems. Scaling such architectures to massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with hundreds or thousands of active antenna elements would lead to excessive-high power consumption and hardware costs. Hence, this paper proposes optimal detections for massive multi-user (MU) MIMO-GFDM communications with coarse quantisation. It achieves substantial cost and power savings and provides a high system capacity. The optimal detections for coarse quantisation in large-scale MU-MIMO-GFDM systems have minimal capability loss compared with the ideal case. There is no additional base-band processing complexity. The simulation results show that the SNR gap between the second mismatched quantiser and the precise quantiser is small. When the ratio of receiving and transmitting antennas is

Deepfake technology, especially deep voice, which has been derived from artificial intelligence in recent years, is potentially harmful, and the public is not yet wary. However, many speech synthesis models measure the degree of true restitution by Mean Opinion Rating (MOS), a subjective assessment of naturalness and quality of speech by human subjects, but in future it will be difficult to distinguish the interlocutor's identity through the screen. For this reason, this study addresses the threat posed by this new technology by combining representational learning and 0transfer learning in two sub-systems: a recognition system and a voice print system. The recognition system is responsible for the detection of which voice is a fake voice generated by speech conversion or speech synthesis techniques, while the acoustic system is responsible for the verification of the speaker's identity through acoustic features. In the speech recognition system, we use the representation learning method and the transfer classification method. We use X-vector data for training, and then fine-tune the model using four types of marker data to learn the representation vectors of real and fake voice, and use support vector machine to classify real and fake voice in the back-end to reduce the negative effect of the new technique.

Noncontact Lie Detection System Involving Photoplethysmography and Heart Rate Variability

Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to determine whether patients have latent illnesses and as an assessment indicator of the autonomic nervous system. Studies have also employed HRV for lie detection, which is commonly performed in the law system. However, several studies have concluded that due to environmental and procedure-related problems, lie detectors may yield inconsistent results. This study used smart recognition technology and proposed a systemized method of lie detection. To verify the reliability of the noncontact lie detection approach, empirical lie detection studies were conducted and the relevant literature was searched for item selection techniques. This study employed a noncontact HRV lie detection system. By experimenting on 15 participants split into four groups, this study verified the reliability of using the physiological characteristic of HRV for lie detection.

High Spectral Efficiency and Low Error Rate MIMO-GFDM for Next-Generation Communication Systems

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology with high order signal modulation method has been proposed recently as a scheme to achieve high throughput requirements of next-generation communication applications. However, the use of high-order modulation signals degrades the error rate performance. Generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) has attracted enormous consideration for deploying in new communication scenarios due to its advantages in terms of out-of-band (OOB) emission, spectral efficiency (SE), and latency. Index modulation (IM) methods convey digital information by utilizing transmission entities with adjustable index parameters to provide flexible system design and offer attractive advantages such as energy and SE without increasing the computational complexity. The Multiple-Mode (MM) method permits multiple subcarriers to transmit multiple modes and employs the whole permutation of these modes to convey additional information bits. The proposed MIMO MM-GFDM-IM scheme improves the bit error rate and the spectral efficiency compared to the existing schemes. The proposed method can select the modulation order and the number of modes to achieve the design goals. Furthermore, a system with high modulation order can improve the spectral efficiency when the constellation point is fixed. This paper also proposes a practical and effective MM selection strategy and two low-complexity detectors.

Communication infrastructure is vital for the activities in an area. However, off-grid is still common in many rural areas, which results in a significant gap from the outside of the area. To provide home care and emergency call functions, we propose a scalable wireless signal transmission architecture based on AIoT and Edge Computing, featuring low power consumption, long distance, and low transmission volume, which are applied to off-grid infrastructure lacking area. © 2022 IEEE.

Compared to Orthogonal Frequency Division Multi-plexing (OFDM), Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC) waveforms have better spectral characteristics and good interference immunity. The FBMC-OQAM technology combining Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC) and Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OQAM) has the characteristics of high spectral efficiency and no synchronization in wireless communication systems. The simulation shows that the SER performance decreases as the modulation's order increases. Furthermore, the minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization outperforms better than the zero-forcing (ZF) equalization.

With the rapid change in technology, the goal of designing portable electronic product focus on longer battery lifetime. Thus, the low overshoot performance in DC-DC buck converter becomes more important. When the switching DC-DC buck converter withstands the large changes from the load, the output voltage will be instantaneously unstable due to insufficient or excessive stored energy in the capacitor, especially in the case of severe load changes, it may even cause the damages on the equipment. In this paper, a sawtooth wave generator was applied to improve the charging and discharging characteristics of capacitor. From the results, the sawtooth oscillation waveforms were successfully generated from the changes of load, and the fast transient response is achieved. The recovery time at undershoot and overshoot conditions are 5.3 mu s and 5.8 mu s, respectively.

Multi-phased solutions of Prandtl's stress function for an orthotropic rectangular bar under Saint-Venant's torsion and the general rule of swapping

Based on the conventional solution of Prandtl's stress function for an orthotropic rectangular bar under Saint-Venant's torsion, one can derive displacements, shear strains, shear stresses and torsional rigidity. The conventional solution of Prandtl's stress function has a hyperbolic function for the coordinate in the bar's thickness direction, and a trigonometric function for the coordinate in the width direction. This paper raises questions about the solution. Why is the solution not arranged in the opposite way? Why is the hyperbolic function not for the coordinate in the width direction and the trigonometric function for the coordinate in the thickness direction? How is it that these obvious questions have never been addressed? This study rearranges the solution of the conventional Prandtl's stress function using the TSAI technique and finds that the solution is multi-phased, indicating that the coordinates in the width and thickness directions and their corresponding parameters are swappable, a phenomenon proposed as the general rule of swapping. © 2024 The Author
