Microplastic pollution is a significant global environmental concern affecting marine ecosystems and human health. This study investigated the presence and abundance of microplastics in the waters and green mussels (Perna viridis) of the Kalirejo coastal area in East Java, Indonesia, a region known for extensive mussel cultivation. The results showed that microplastics were present in all water and mussel samples, with higher concentrations at shallower depths. Fragments were the most prevalent microplastic type, followed by fibers and films, with polyethylene (PE) identified as the dominant polymer. A strong positive correlation between microplastic concentrations in water and mussel tissues indicates direct environmental uptake. These findings highlight widespread microplastic contamination in the Kalirejo coastal area, raising concerns about environmental impacts and health hazards associated with consuming contaminated shellfish.

The field of dermatology faces considerable challenges when it comes to early detection of skin cancer. Our study focused on using different datasets, including original data, augmented data, and SMOTE oversampled data, to identify skin cancer. Our dataset consisted of images of skin lesions from the MNIST Skin Cancer dataset (HAM 10000), including samples of both cancerous and benign cases in the dataset. We employed data augmentation to expand the dataset's size and increase the diversity of skin lesion features. Furthermore, to tackle class imbalance in the dataset, we applied the SMOTE oversampling technique to generate synthetic samples for the under-represented group. With the original, augmented, and SMOTE oversampled datasets, we trained a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. The performance of the model was evaluated using accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score. The comparison between the results obtained from the original data, augmented data, and SMOTE oversampling data clearly revealed distinctions in performance. Our findings clearly demonstrate that employing data augmentation and SMOTE oversampling can significantly enhance the efficacy of skin cancer detection. © 2023 IEEE.

The cost of foreign ownership: Voluntary sustainability reporting and financial performance in an emerging economy

Purpose: Many emerging economy firms are under foreign owners' pressure to embrace the challenges of addressing corporate social responsibility (CSR) and consider adopting sustainability initiatives. However, it is not clear how foreign ownership plays a role to enable or inhibit these emerging economy firms from translating sustainability initiatives into improved financial performance. Utilizing neo-institutional theory, the authors argue that emerging economy firms that voluntarily report sustainability gain legitimacy in the eyes of shareholders and improve stock market performance. However, emerging economy firms may not have the resources to reconcile the internal stakeholders' various legitimacy requirements to promote sustainability practices, resulting in a negative association with accounting performance. Foreign ownership attenuates the relationship between sustainability reporting and firm performance due to the different legitimacy requirements in foreign markets. Design/methodology/approach: To test the study’s hypotheses, the authors collected and analyzed a large sample of publicly listed firms between 2010 and 2016 in Taiwan where the types of foreign ownership include foreign trust funds, foreign financial institutions and other foreign legal entities. Regression analyses were conducted to investigate whether the firms that report their sustainable practices have better financial performance, including stock market performance and accounting performance. Additionally, a three-step procedure was employed to address the endogeneity issue with a binary explanatory variable. Findings: The positive stock market reaction to the emerging economy firms' voluntary sustainability reporting supports legitimacy gained among investors. By contrast, sustainability reporting has a negative association with accounting performance due to the difficulty of reconciling different legitimacy requirements among various stakeholders in emerging economies. The prosperity of cloud services stimulates the study of reversible data hiding in encrypted images, for which researchers dedicate to find better methods to adopt the new assumption that the ones who provide the cover images, a.k.a. the Content-owner, are no longer the same as the ones who hide the secret message into them, a.k.a. the Data-hider, and the Data-hider might not always be allowed to know the actual content of cover image the Content-owner provided, while the one who receives the stego image must be able to restore the exact cover image after extracting the secret. A method of such reversible data hiding in encrypted images has been proposed and we propose improvements to enhance its performance and make it more generalized and stable. Experimental results show that our proposal improves its performance even in the worst-case scenario.

Mobile banking is an important part of bank sustainability. This study integrated the extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and DeLone & McLean IS Model to determine factors affecting mobile banking loyalty in the Philippines. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach was utilized to analyze the interrelationship among several factors such as social influence (SI), hedonic motivation (HM), self-efficacy (SE), behavioral intention (BI), actual use (USE), and customer satisfaction (CS) to the loyalty (LOY). The research model was tested and validated using data collected through an online survey from 300 Filipino customers. Interestingly, SE was found to be the best predictor of behavioral intention. This study provided clues on the relationship of SE and SI towards HM. Our result concluded a strong relationship between BI, USE, CS, and LOY. Finally, CS was also found to have a strong relationship towards LOY. This research would help banks create a customer-centric mobile banking experience to maintain customer satisfaction and build customer loyalty. In addition, this study suggests that the low prevalence of mobile banking in the Philippines is due to low awareness of the customer. Finally, Philippine banks and policy makers should focus on raising the awareness of mobile banking through proper advertisements and campaigns to enhance mobile banking adoption in the Philippines. © 2023 ACM.

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the loss of the number of enrollees at universities in many developing countries, including the Philippines. The current study integrated the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to determine factors affecting intention to enroll in the online academic year among undergraduate students during the COVID-19 pandemic. 370 Filipino undergraduate students filled the online survey, which contained 71 questions. The Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) indicated that attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control had significant direct effects on perceived usefulness which subsequently led to an engagement. Regarding the perceived ease of use, SEM indicated that it had a significant direct effect on perceived performance. Furthermore, SEM also indicated that perceived performance and engagement had significant direct effects on perceived effectiveness which subsequently led to the intention to enroll. The integrated TPB and extended TAM can be extended and applied in evaluating the behavioral motives of students to enroll in the online academic year globally that are currently affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022 ACM.

This study uses a conjoint analysis approach to determine the key factors influencing subscriber preferences for subscribing to Netflix plan. In a rapidly evolving industry, understanding the drivers of subscription choices is critical for market success. Through a designed survey, respondents are presented with different hypothetical Netflix subscription plans characterized by attributes such as price, resolution, same time watch device, downloadable device and device specs. By analyzing respondents' answers from these attributes, researchers aim to find out the relatedness of each attribute and levels with the subscription preference. The study's findings can help Netflix make more strategic decisions about plan options and pricing policies, so that it can better serve the wide range of demands and tastes of customers in the cutthroat streaming market. © 2024 IEEE.

The quality control process performs an acceptance sampling plan to determine if a batch of products meets quality specifications. Acceptance Quality Limit (AQL) defines the acceptable level of defects, but determining the appropriate AQL rate is challenging due to manufacturing process variations. This study utilized Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (PFMEA) to determine the AQL for acceptance sampling plans and evaluate its performance against the current method using Operating Characteristic Curve. The study identified eighteen failure modes from PFMEA, with severity level 7, occurrence level 3, and detection level 3. The results demonstrated that PFMEA can serve as a valuable reference for modeling acceptance sampling plans. Acceptance sampling with AQL effectively assesses defective batches compared to the current method. Incorporating PFMEA in acceptance sampling plans enables companies to enhance their understanding of process performance and potential risks, empowering them to make informed decisions and improve product quality. © 2024 ACM.

In recent years, reversible data hiding has become one of the most commonly used techniques. In this paper, a novel dual image reversible data hiding (RDH) technique based on a quinary secret square is proposed. In this technique, the imperceptibility and data hiding capacity are improved while maintaining good image quality in a lossless manner. The information overhead sent to the receiver for extraction and recovery is also reduced. A secret square is used during the embedding and extraction processes. In addition, the use of 5-ary numbers rather than binary numbers is proposed to ensure that all secret messages are embedded from the symbols. This technique uses two pixels as a block (2 x 2) and a maximum of 25 symbols to embed the secret message. In the experiments, 25 symbols and 16 symbols were used to embed a 512 x 512 image. Two hiding capacities were achieved by using two different numbers of symbols, as previously mentioned. Using 16 symbols, the technique achieved good average PSNR values for both PSNR1 and PSNR2 with an average PSNR of 51.60 dB for the same data hiding capacity of 524,288 bits. With 25 symbols and the exact same technique, the embedding capacity was increased to 608,174 bits, which is greater than the hiding capacity of other existing techniques.

In this paper, we propose a steganographic method with high capacity based on modulo operation. The secret message is mapped to a cube, the coordinates of the position will be calculated by modulo and then embedded in the cover image. The experimental results show that our proposed method can have a higher capacity with imperceptibility. The modulo operation can make the proposed method have lower computational overhead.
