This paper presents the degenerate kernels for the polyharmonic and poly-Helmholtz partial differential operators in the polar and spherical coordinates. These degenerate kernels are essential if the analytical/semi-analytical solutions and the mathematical degeneracies involving these operators are conducted by the boundary integral equations. In addition, a two-dimensional creeping flow problem is considered to illustrate the use of the degenerate kernels for problems governed by coupled partial differential equations. The coupled governing equations of the creeping flow problems are converted into a biharmonic equation by using the Hörmander linear partial differential operator theory and the Cartesian partial derivatives on the harmonic and biharmonic degenerate kernels are used to obtain the degenerate kernels of two-dimensional creeping flow problems for BIE analyses. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted to study the convergence of the polyharmonic and poly-Helmholtz degenerate kernels. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Crawler cranes are used in various applications, including plant construction and civil engineering. However, accidents caused by hazardous events, such as overturning the entire body or overshadowing of a suspended load, can be problematic. Because crawler cranes are large and powerful machines, simulators are required to analyze the relationship between such hazardous events and human operations. This study proposed a framework for a mixed-reality simulator to analyze the interactions between humans and crawler cranes. This framework combined the high-performance graphics capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 with the high-precision multibody dynamics analysis of MATLAB Simscape to create a visually and physically realistic simulation. Moreover, the quantification of the decision-making process was possible based on the eye-tracking information of the operator. This study described the implementation of these features and discussed the prospects for human-crawler crane interaction analysis using this simulator. © 2024 IEEE.

Modeling of an external force estimator for an end-effector of a robot by neural networks

This paper proposes a method to estimate external forces at the tip of a robot end-effector by using a neural network model. In order to avoid the use of an expensive force sensor in the training purpose, the proposed method implements the indirect training method by including the inverse dynamic model of the robot manipulator to the training algorithm with available information from a default robot system. In this method, the robot dynamics equations are necessary for the training, therefore a disturbance observer is adopted to deal with the existing uncertainties and errors. The performance of the proposed estimation method is evaluated through experiments of a 5-DOF robotic experimental platform, comparing to another existing estimation method using recurrent neural network with a type-1 disturbance observer for the external force estimation. The estimation results show that the behavior of the estimated external forces strongly correlates with the applied external forces and the proposed method is superior to the other method. © 2023 The Chinese Institute of Engineers.

In this study, we focused on depositing a target material, cobalt-iron-dysprosium (Co60Fe20Dy20), onto silicon (Si) (100) substrates with thickness varying from 10 nm to 50 nm through a direct-current (DC) magnetron sputtering technique. The subsequent step involved subjecting the samples to an hour-long annealing process in a vacuum annealing furnace at temperatures of 100°C, 200°C, and 300°C. To assess the elemental composition of the CoFeDy films, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was employed. An observed trend indicated an increase in low-frequency alternating-current magnetic susceptibility (χac) with the increasing thickness. Remarkably, the CoFeDy films exhibited their peak χac following annealing at 300°C, with an optimal resonance frequency of 50 Hz. After annealing at 300°C, the CoFeDy film’s surface energy peaked at 50 nm. The magnetic, electrical, and adhesive properties of the CoFeDy films were notably influenced by surface roughness at different annealing temperatures. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed a gradual reduction in film roughness post-annealing, corresponding to smoother surfaces indicative of a weaker domain wall pinning effect, heightened carrier conductivity, and increased liquid spreading. Collectively, these outcomes contributed to diminished χac, reduced electrical resistance, and enhanced adhesion. The heat pipe solar water heater utilizes an evaporator to capture heat which is then used to heat water in the condenser section. The greater the heat that is able to be absorbed on the evaporator, can improve the overall performance of the solar water heater. Fins are added to the evaporator to increase the heat absorption area, but the shape of the fins can also affect the amount of heat absorbed. This research was conducted to determine the effect of fin shape on heat absorption in the evaporator section. Fins on the evaporator are made in a circular and flat shape with a width of 43 mm, a length of 516 mm for a flat fin and a diameter of 43 mm totaling 50 for a circular fin. From the test results it was found that the circular fin can reduce thermal resistance 43.48% greater than the flat fin and 9.89% of the solar water heater heat pipe without fins. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Thin-walled machining has played an important role in automotive and aerospace domains. Due to physical characteristics of the flexible structure, the thin-walled machining is prone to the deformation and the onset of chatter. To solve the problem, a robot is considered to support the flexible workpiece while cutting. This paper studies finite element dynamic modeling and stability analysis of the robot-assisted thin-walled milling system. It is divided into three submodels: thin-walled workpiece, robot, and cutting process. The finite element method (FEM) is adopted to obtain a realistic dynamic model of the workpiece and allows analysis of any location. The robot dynamics is linearized to a 1-degree-of-freedom (DOF) mass-spring-damper system for model reduction. The cutting force variation and the regenerative effects involved in the cutting process establish time-periodic and time delay terms in the milling model. The semi-discretization method (SDM) is used for the stability analysis. Simulation results show a significant improvement in the milling stability from the robot support in any location, leading to higher productivity.

This research represents the battery thermal management system on the electric bike using heat pipes as a passive cooling system. The experiment was conducted using rollers positioned on a rear wheel, which provided rolling resistance to influence the power consumption of the module battery. The batteries thermal performance experiment was conducted under 30 minutes of data sampling using 3 different loads, which were 1 C, 1.5 C, and 2 C. The purpose of the experiment was to design the battery thermal management system and analyze the thermal performance of the battery module on an electric bike. The results indicate that compared to battery modules without a cooling system, a battery thermal management system based on heat pipes could reduce the temperature battery at 1 C, 1.5 C, and 2 C loads which were 4.5 oC, 6.3 oC, and 8.1 oC, respectively. Furthermore, combining the heat pipe and air cooling system could reduce the battery temperature to 11.3 oC, 12.2 oC, and 12.9 oC at a 2 C load. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Conventional fuel vehicles emit significant amounts of lead, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. To overcome this issue, the use of electric vehicles is becoming more popular because the electricity needed can be produced from non-fossil fuel sources, thus reducing the pollution generated by conventional vehicles. The development of energy storage technology, such as new battery technology, fuel cells, ultracapacitors, etc, has been developed for electric and hybrid vehicles. Li-ion batteries are widely used because of their high energy density, longer life service, and eco-friendliness. Nevertheless, the charge and discharge time of the battery will generate heat and raise the battery temperature. The heat pipe is a two-phase passive heat exchanger technology with high thermal conductivity to maintain a uniform temperature difference along with the evaporator and condenser and could be used as a battery thermal management system. In this study, a heat pipe was designed for battery thermal management systems for cylindrical lithium battery modules. The experimental results showed that the use of heat pipes can effectively reduce the battery temperature by 12.9 o C when compared to conditions without cooling. © 2022, The Authors.
