Modeling and Stability Analysis of Robot-assisted Thin-walled Milling

Thin-walled machining has played an important role in automotive and aerospace domains. Due to physical characteristics of the flexible structure, the thin-walled machining is prone to the deformation and the onset of chatter. To solve the problem, a robot is considered to support the flexible workpiece while cutting. This paper studies finite element dynamic modeling and stability analysis of the robot-assisted thin-walled milling system. It is divided into three submodels: thin-walled workpiece, robot, and cutting process. The finite element method (FEM) is adopted to obtain a realistic dynamic model of the workpiece and allows analysis of any location. The robot dynamics is linearized to a 1-degree-of-freedom (DOF) mass-spring-damper system for model reduction. The cutting force variation and the regenerative effects involved in the cutting process establish time-periodic and time delay terms in the milling model. The semi-discretization method (SDM) is used for the stability analysis. Simulation results show a significant improvement in the milling stability from the robot support in any location, leading to higher productivity.

People increasingly prioritize a balanced diet to enhance well-being, yet making informed dietary choices remains challenging amidst the abundance of options. To address this, we developed a meal image recognition and healthy meal combination recommender system, integrating generative artificial intelligence (AI). Convolutional neural networks were used for precise meal image recognition to identify diverse food items. The generative AI-augmented recommendation engine offers personalized meal suggestions aligned with nutritional goals and dietary preferences, utilizing a nutrition knowledge base to ensure overall well-being. The system's feasibility was validated, illustrating its excellence in meal recognition accuracy, recommendation diversity, and user engagement. By integrating generative AI, the system shows its potential to enhance dietary recommendations and public health.

The effects of growth environments on WS2 in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) recently have attracted much attention because of their outstanding catalytic activity, low cost, and earth abundance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Among these TMDs, MoS2 and WS2 are recognized as promising HER electrocatalysts and have been explored to be one of the candidates for replacing precious metals. In this work, the electrocatalytic activity of WS2 grown in Ar-only, Ar + H2, and ambient environments were studied, where the WS2 was synthesized by thermolysis from (NH4)2WS4 precursor. Different surface morphologies are shown under the different growth atmospheres. The structures of pure WS2, WS2 and WO3 mixed, and almost WO3 were prepared in different growth atmospheres of Ar-only, Ar + H2, and ambient environment, respectively. All the materials prepared in these different environments exhibit high crystalline characteristic. Especially, the pure WS2 grown in an Ar-only environment presents the preferred (103) lattice plane. The pure WS2 performs the best H2 evolution efficiency, indicating that high crystallinity and preferred (103) lattice plane could be relative to the electrocatalytic activity. The studies provide fundamental insight for further design and preparation of electrocatalysts, useful in the development of clean energy. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd

Enhancing trajectory tracking and energy efficiency in Pneumatic Servo Translational Parallel Manipulator with Frac-SMC-RFESO Control

Pneumatic-driven systems often face significant energy consumption challenges, primarily due to compressed air leakage and inefficient utilization. To address these issues, this paper presents a comprehensive solution encompassing both hardware and software designs for a Pneumatic Servo Translational Parallel Manipulator (PS-TPM). On the software side, the proposed energy-efficient controller, Frac-SMC-RFESO, integrates fractional-order sliding mode control with a reduced fractional-order extended state observer (RFESO) to optimize the PS-TPM's performance. This integration endows the Frac-SMC-RFESO with exceptional adaptability, enabling it to effectively manage the system's complex dynamics and nonlinearities while minimizing energy consumption. Furthermore, by utilizing the RFESO, the controller estimates system uncertainties and disturbances within the PS-TPM, further enhancing trajectory tracking performance. In its mechanical design, the PS-TPM incorporates double-acting magnetic rodless cylinders paired with proportional directional control valves, improving sealing to prevent air leakage and thereby enhancing energy efficiency. Experimental results highlight the exceptional performance of the Frac-SMC-RFESO controller, achieving superior trajectory tracking while reducing energy consumption by 16% to 47% compared to the RLESO-SMC (an integer-order sliding mode controller with a reduced-order linear extended state observer), LADRC (a linear active disturbance rejection controller), and the PID controller. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Information technology and the Internet have progressed rapidly in people’s lives, the privacy of information has become an important issue due to the accessibility of data. Therefore, to enhance information security and privacy protection, this paper proposes a new high-capacity method for data hiding. The proposed method is based on 3D magic cube with double layers embedding. In the field of data hiding, the reference matrix-based methods attract many researchers because of its high-capacity. Recently, as the needs of the high payloads of the stego-image, the multi-layers-based technique is applied to provide larger embedding capacity. However, the image after data embedding will cause serious distortions, especially on multi-layers embedding, hence, keeping the image at a good visual quality and achieving high-payloads are the main challenges for data hiding. In this scheme, we take advantage of 3D magic cube and 3D reference space with double layers embedding for our data hiding technique to improve the embedding payloads. The experimental results show that our method not only provides good embedding capacity (4.00 bpp) but also keeps the image at acceptable quality (In terms of PSNR > 30). © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The heat pipe solar water heater utilizes an evaporator to capture heat which is then used to heat water in the condenser section. The greater the heat that is able to be absorbed on the evaporator, can improve the overall performance of the solar water heater. Fins are added to the evaporator to increase the heat absorption area, but the shape of the fins can also affect the amount of heat absorbed. This research was conducted to determine the effect of fin shape on heat absorption in the evaporator section. Fins on the evaporator are made in a circular and flat shape with a width of 43 mm, a length of 516 mm for a flat fin and a diameter of 43 mm totaling 50 for a circular fin. From the test results it was found that the circular fin can reduce thermal resistance 43.48% greater than the flat fin and 9.89% of the solar water heater heat pipe without fins. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this paper, an image matching system is proposed for gold powder distribution on the ankle ring surface of pigeons, which uses ankle ring segmentation and then gold powder location identification. The ankle ring is segmented using ICNet, then apply OpenCV SimpleBlobDetector to the area to be discriminated to get the number of gold powder and its position. The YCbCr hue is used to make the gold powder features more visible and stable. Finally, the processed images are imported into our matching system. The results show that the processing speed can reach 12 frames per second(fps) and the Mean Intersection over Union(MIoU) of semantic segmentation can reach 93%. © 2021 IEEE.

We consider the use of a domain proxy assisted private citizen broadband radio service (CBRS) network and propose a Maximum Transmission Continuity (MTC) scheme to transmit Internet of Things (IoT) data reliably. MTC dynamically allocates available CBRS channels to sustain the continuity of data transmission without violating the channel access requirements. MTC allocates the granted CBRS channels according to the priority of each user, the instant channel access status, interference among users, and the fairness. Online games display a unique market with a promising economy;hence many developer companies are exploring and have been utilizing this technology because of good possibility in recent years. This study aimed to determine the composition of online game attribute that is most preferred by customers using a Conjoint Analysis Approach. This study utilized different attributes such as graphics, player-to-player interaction, character creation freedom, game accessibility, monetization, storyline, and business model. An orthogonal design of conjoint analysis was utilized to assess customer preference for online games. A survey was proposed to a community of online game players and segmented among their gender, age, and income. The results showed that business model was the most considered attribute while accessibility and monetization were the least preferred. The findings of this study could be beneficial to both technology corporations developing products that fit their target customers and customers making most of their investment. © 2022 ACM.

Fall incidents among the elderly represent a significant global concern, often resulting in physical injuries and psychological distress. It is crucial to develop reliable fall detection systems which are capable of identifying fall events immediately and triggering alerts for assistance. However, real-world fall occurrences are infrequent, leading to a highly imbalanced class situation. Training a model with imbalanced datasets may result in biased models with poor performance in fall detection. To address this challenge, various techniques such as data transformation and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) have been proposed. However, these methods are constrained by issues such as limitations in input data size or sensitivity to outliers. Compared to other methods, variational autoencoder (VAE) can generate data with a similar probability distribution to the original input data while constraining the latent representation in a Gaussian distribution. This study proposes a VAE-based data augmentation method for wearable-based fall detection system. The proposed method is validated on the FallAllD public dataset, achieving a F-score of 99.46%. The performance has been increased by 2.21%. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of VAE-based data augmentation technique in enhancing fall detection systems and its superior performance compared with other traditional data augmentation methods.
