Researchers emphasize the importance of hardware accelerators for mathematical morphology. If there are any issues, the hardware architecture may need to be redesigned. Thus, we propose a novel, reconfigurable hardware architecture with pipeline techniques for acceleration. With the order control register, there is no need to modify the architecture even if different results are expected. Furthermore, the hardware architecture caters to specific purposes instead of requiring a purpose-built hardware design. © 2023 IEEE.

Crawler cranes are used in various applications, including plant construction and civil engineering. However, accidents caused by hazardous events, such as overturning the entire body or overshadowing of a suspended load, can be problematic. Because crawler cranes are large and powerful machines, simulators are required to analyze the relationship between such hazardous events and human operations. This study proposed a framework for a mixed-reality simulator to analyze the interactions between humans and crawler cranes. This framework combined the high-performance graphics capabilities of Unreal Engine 5 with the high-precision multibody dynamics analysis of MATLAB Simscape to create a visually and physically realistic simulation. Moreover, the quantification of the decision-making process was possible based on the eye-tracking information of the operator. This study described the implementation of these features and discussed the prospects for human-crawler crane interaction analysis using this simulator. © 2024 IEEE.

Modeling of an external force estimator for an end-effector of a robot by neural networks

This paper proposes a method to estimate external forces at the tip of a robot end-effector by using a neural network model. In order to avoid the use of an expensive force sensor in the training purpose, the proposed method implements the indirect training method by including the inverse dynamic model of the robot manipulator to the training algorithm with available information from a default robot system. In this method, the robot dynamics equations are necessary for the training, therefore a disturbance observer is adopted to deal with the existing uncertainties and errors. The performance of the proposed estimation method is evaluated through experiments of a 5-DOF robotic experimental platform, comparing to another existing estimation method using recurrent neural network with a type-1 disturbance observer for the external force estimation. The estimation results show that the behavior of the estimated external forces strongly correlates with the applied external forces and the proposed method is superior to the other method. © 2023 The Chinese Institute of Engineers.

The field of dermatology faces considerable challenges when it comes to early detection of skin cancer. Our study focused on using different datasets, including original data, augmented data, and SMOTE oversampled data, to identify skin cancer. Our dataset consisted of images of skin lesions from the MNIST Skin Cancer dataset (HAM 10000), including samples of both cancerous and benign cases in the dataset. We employed data augmentation to expand the dataset's size and increase the diversity of skin lesion features. Furthermore, to tackle class imbalance in the dataset, we applied the SMOTE oversampling technique to generate synthetic samples for the under-represented group. With the original, augmented, and SMOTE oversampled datasets, we trained a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model. The performance of the model was evaluated using accuracy, recall, precision, and F1-score. The comparison between the results obtained from the original data, augmented data, and SMOTE oversampling data clearly revealed distinctions in performance. Our findings clearly demonstrate that employing data augmentation and SMOTE oversampling can significantly enhance the efficacy of skin cancer detection. © 2023 IEEE.

Flexural-gravity wave interaction with undulating bottom topography in the presence of uniform current: An asymptotic approach

Using an asymptotic method, this article deals with flexural-gravity wave scattering with undulating bottom topography, including the effect of uniform currents. The interest in this problem lies in developing second-order solutions using the Fourier transform, which minimises the error gap between first and second-order solutions. The present method allows the physical processes involved in the sea-bed topography, uniform current, plate-covered surface, and wave interaction to be studied. Specifically, we observe Bragg resonance between the flexural-gravity waves and the bottom ripples, which are associated with the reflection of incident wave energy. We examine the effects of wave current and emphasise how crucial the asymptotic expansion method is to the emergence of the current response. We demonstrate that bottom topography dominates the effects of Bragg resonance for depth Froude numbers valued at 0.8 or less. Further, most reflected wave components have their frequencies shifted by the current, and wave action conservation causes reflected wave energy to be enhanced for following currents. Using the Joint North Sea Wave Observation Project spectrum and the discrete Fourier transform, the theory derived in the frequency domain is shown in the time domain to analyse wave propagation through the whole system. © 2024

eLearning has been utilized as a mode of instruction among medical students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of eLearning platforms in medical education during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines by employing the latent variables of UTAUT2, along with two additional latent variables gathered from various related literature. A sum of 360 medical students participated and answered an online survey that consists of 40 questions. A stepwise multiple linear regression was utilized and found that performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC), can successfully predict the actual use (AU) of medical students with a precision of 54.22%. A higher performance expectancy (PE), habit (HB), and instructor characteristics (IC) can enhance and promote the acceptance of medical eLearning platforms. This is the first study that has examined the acceptance of eLearning platforms among medical students in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. The outcomes of this research can serve as guidelines for the Commission on Higher Education of the Philippines for the enhancement of eLearning platforms. Although this study only utilized the latent variables of UTAUT2 along with two additional variables: Learning Value and Instructor Characteristics;the findings of this study would still hold significant value for promoting open innovation in eLearning platforms in medical fields worldwide. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). Fall incidents among the elderly represent a significant global concern, often resulting in physical injuries and psychological distress. It is crucial to develop reliable fall detection systems which are capable of identifying fall events immediately and triggering alerts for assistance. However, real-world fall occurrences are infrequent, leading to a highly imbalanced class situation. Training a model with imbalanced datasets may result in biased models with poor performance in fall detection. To address this challenge, various techniques such as data transformation and Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) have been proposed. However, these methods are constrained by issues such as limitations in input data size or sensitivity to outliers. Compared to other methods, variational autoencoder (VAE) can generate data with a similar probability distribution to the original input data while constraining the latent representation in a Gaussian distribution. This study proposes a VAE-based data augmentation method for wearable-based fall detection system. The proposed method is validated on the FallAllD public dataset, achieving a F-score of 99.46%. The performance has been increased by 2.21%. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of VAE-based data augmentation technique in enhancing fall detection systems and its superior performance compared with other traditional data augmentation methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Analysis of water wave interaction with multiple submerged semi-circular porous structures

The impact of an array of bottom-mounted semi-circular breakwaters on wave scattering and trapping is investigated. Under the assumption of linear water wave theory, a computational solution is developed using the methods of eigenfunction expansion and multi-domain boundary element. In order to understand how different structural and wave characteristics affect wave flow, the reflection, transmission and dissipation factors are evaluated and investigated. The study reveals that the Bragg reflection happens when a series of porous semi-circular breakwaters scatter waves. In addition, the presence of four structures causes nearly 80 % of the wave energy to dissipate. As the number of semi-circular breakwaters rises, the hydrodynamic forces acting on the impermeable sea wall greatly reduce. The study concludes that the number of structures, radius and porous-effect parameters of the structures plays a vital role in wave reflection, reducing the hydrodynamic load on the impenetrable sea wall. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

In this study, an integrated model is developed for studying the Sanchi oil spill event, which occurred in the East China Sea in January 2018. The results of the Advanced Research Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF-ARW) as well as the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) are used for meteorological forecasting and the hydrodynamic simulations, respectively. These data are adopted as inputs for the OpenOil, a sub-module of OpenDrift, for the oil spill model. Some reference experiments are examined for short-term hindcast. The satellite image is used to validate the numerical result. The oil slicks of the satellite image and the numerical result are of similar shapes. Quantitatively, the simulated oil slick and that from the satellite image are located closely and have similar dimensions of 56 km by 34 km and 54 km by 29 km, respectively. It is found that the accurate results can be obtained by the proposed integrated model with the high-frequency (hourly) and high-spatial-resolution data as inputs, and the wind drift factor has to be added. The long-term 1-month simulation showed that most of the oil particles would move to the northeast of the sinking location and be trapped by the Kuroshio current. © IMechE 2023.

The pandemic significantly affects the tourism industry due to health risks and travel conditions. The study aimed to identify the travel preference of Filipinos amidst the pandemic through Applied Conjoint Analysis. Several attributes such as Location, Ambiance, Pre-Departure COVID-19-19 Test, Quarantine Requirements, Insurance Policy, and Type of Tour were analyzed simultaneously. A total of 61 Filipinos answered an online questionnaire which was distributed by a convenience sampling approach. The results demonstrate that Quarantine requirements are an essential attribute that influenced the decision of Filipino travelers. The study can be used for future studies about travel trends due to the pandemic. © 2023 IEEE.
