We propose Text2Scene, a method to automatically create realistic textures for virtual scenes composed of multiple objects. Guided by a reference image and text descriptions, our pipeline adds detailed texture on labeled 3D geometries in the room such that the generated colors respect the hierarchical structure or semantic parts that are often composed of similar materials. Instead of applying flat stylization on the entire scene at a single step, we obtain weak semantic cues from geometric segmentation, which are further clarified by assigning initial colors to segmented parts. Then we add texture details for individual objects such that their projections on image space exhibit feature embedding aligned with the embedding of the input. The decomposition makes the entire pipeline tractable to a moderate amount of computation resources and memory. As our framework utilizes the existing resources of image and text embedding, it does not require dedicated datasets with high-quality textures designed by skillful artists. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first practical and scalable approach that can create detailed and realistic textures of the desired style that maintain structural context for scenes with multiple objects.

A Hybrid Inference Engine to Predict Uncertain Sugar Content for Sugar Industry

The sugar industry is facing challenges in increasing productivity to meet consumer demand. One opportunity for productivity improvement lies in ensuring sugar content. This study proposes a hybrid model to predict sugar content by considering uncertainty factors. A hybrid model combining fuzzy subtractive clustering, and a fuzzy inference system is proposed to predict sugar content. The clustering results using silhouette and fuzzy subtractive clustering successfully identified 6 cluster centres from 2225 datasets collected in a sugar industry in East Java Province. The hybrid inference engine model is designed with fuzzy rules derived from the clustered data. Two inference models are developed: triangular and Gaussian fuzzy numbers. The testing results indicate that the hybrid model with triangular fuzzy numbers shows the smallest error with an R2 value of 0.95. This model is possible to applied in the sugar industry for decision makers in improving productivity with taking attention into uncertain factors influencing sugar content.

Essential components of early fire warning systems include effective fire and smoke detection mechanisms. Despite object detection-based technologies demonstrating promising results, the unique characteristics of fire and smoke, the complexity of fire environments, the scarcity of labeled datasets, and the presence of noise in images necessitate further improvements. We have developed a YOLOv7-tiny optimized architecture called the Dynamic Fire and Smoke Detection Module (DFDM) to address these challenges. Our approach includes an asymptotic feature pyramid network (AFPN) to bridge semantic gaps, thus enhancing fire detection capabilities in complex environments. A cross-level dual attention mechanism also refines critical smoke and fire detection features. To enhance performance while reducing model complexity, we introduced a novel partial convolution module designed to filter out extraneous information effectively. Experimental results demonstrate that DFDM provides robust fire and smoke detection capabilities, giving it a competitive advantage over more complex systems. The increasing sophistication of cyber attacks necessitates effective intrusion detection systems. We propose a novel intrusion detection method integrating deep learning with big data management using Apache Spark. Leveraging the comprehensive CSE-CIC-IDS2018 dataset, we apply extensive data preprocessing, including handling missing and unreliable values, duplicates, and redundant columns. In addition, implementation of a Random Forest based feature importance approach is derived to prioritize the most impactful Features. Furthermore, stratified k-fold cross-validation is used for a model selection process on a class-imbalanced dataset. Our weighted Random Forest classifier achieves a remarkable weighted average F1-score of 0.999 and a test inference time of 0.673 seconds using only the top 34 features, outperforming previous studies without sampling techniques. The proposed architecture offers a scalable and accurate solution for intrusion detection in cloud architectures, demonstrating the effectiveness of combining deep learning and big data technologies for cybersecurity.

The integration of Satellite-Terrestrial Networks (ISTN) necessitates advanced security measures, particularly Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs). This study introduces hybrid sequential intrusion detection models for ISTNs, combining Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The models employ both anomaly-based and signature-based detection to enhance accuracy, utilizing methods such as Extra Trees (ET), Decision Trees (DT), Random Forest (RF), XGBoost (XGB), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU). These models are chosen for their superior performance and are used sequentially to improve IDSs effectiveness. RF-based Sequential Feature Selection (RF-SFS) is also utilized to reduce dataset dimensionality, which in turn decreases the computational costs for each model. Evaluations using UNSW-NB15 and STIN datasets-representing terrestrial and satellite traffic, respectively-demonstrate the models' superiority over traditional IDSs. The XGB-ET model achieved 99.99% accuracy in anomaly detection, while the XGB-GRU model attained 89% accuracy in signature-based detection on the UNSW-NB15 dataset. On the STIN dataset, the ET-DT-GRU model reached 96.47% accuracy in signature-based detection. Additionally, RF-SFS reduced execution times, with training and testing speedups up to 2.8x.

Toward Robust Hyper-Detailed Image Captioning: A Multiagent Approach and Dual Evaluation Metrics for Factuality and Coverage

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) excel at generating highly detailed captions but often produce hallucinations. Our analysis reveals that existing hallucination detection methods struggle with detailed captions. We attribute this to the increasing reliance of MLLMs on their generated text, rather than the input image, as the sequence length grows. To address this issue, we propose a multiagent approach that leverages LLM-MLLM collaboration to correct given captions. Additionally, we introduce an evaluation framework and a benchmark dataset to facilitate the systematic analysis of detailed captions. Our experiments demonstrate that our proposed evaluation method better aligns with human judgments of factuality than existing metrics and that existing approaches to improve the MLLM factuality may fall short in hyper-detailed image captioning tasks. In contrast, our proposed method significantly enhances the factual accuracy of captions, even improving those generated by GPT-4V. Finally, we highlight a limitation of VQA-centric benchmarking by demonstrating that an MLLM’s performance on VQA benchmarks may not correlate with its ability to generate detailed image captions. © 2024, CC BY.

Adversarial Environment Design via Regret-Guided Diffusion Models

Training agents that are robust to environmental changes remains a significant challenge in deep reinforcement learning (RL). Unsupervised environment design (UED) has recently emerged to address this issue by generating a set of training environments tailored to the agent’s capabilities. While prior works demonstrate that UED has the potential to learn a robust policy, their performance is constrained by the capabilities of the environment generation. To this end, we propose a novel UED algorithm, adversarial environment design via regret-guided diffusion models (ADD). The proposed method guides the diffusion-based environment generator with the regret of the agent to produce environments that the agent finds challenging but conducive to further improvement. By exploiting the representation power of diffusion models, ADD can directly generate adversarial environments while maintaining the diversity of training environments, enabling the agent to effectively learn a robust policy. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method successfully generates an instructive curriculum of environments, outperforming UED baselines in zero-shot generalization across novel, out-of-distribution environments. In the realm of autonomous agents, ensuring safety and reliability in complex and dynamic environments remains a paramount challenge. Safe reinforcement learning addresses these concerns by introducing safety constraints, but still faces challenges in navigating intricate environments such as complex driving situations. To overcome these challenges, we present the safe constraint reward (Safe CoR) framework, a novel method that utilizes two types of expert demonstrations—reward expert demonstrations focusing on performance optimization and safe expert demonstrations prioritizing safety. By exploiting a constraint reward (CoR), our framework guides the agent to balance performance goals of reward sum with safety constraints. We test the proposed framework in diverse environments, including the safety gym, metadrive, and the real-world Jackal platform. Our proposed framework improves algorithm performance by 39% and reduces constraint violations by 88% on the real-world Jackal platform, highlighting its effectiveness. Through this innovative approach, we expect significant advancements in real-world performance, leading to transformative effects in the realm of safe and reliable autonomous agents.

The absolute depth values of surrounding environments provide crucial cues for various assistive technologies, such as localization, navigation, and 3D structure estimation. We propose that accurate depth estimated from panoramic images can serve as a powerful and light-weight input for a wide range of downstream tasks requiring 3D information. While panoramic images can easily capture the surrounding context from commodity devices, the estimated depth shares the limitations of conventional image-based depth estimation; the performance deteriorates under large domain shifts and the absolute values are still ambiguous to infer from 2D observations. By taking advantage of the holistic view, we mitigate such effects in a self-supervised way and fine-tune the network with geometric consistency during the test phase. Specifically, we construct a 3D point cloud from the current depth prediction and project the point cloud at various viewpoints or apply stretches on the current input image to generate synthetic panoramas. Then we minimize the discrepancy of the 3D structure estimated from synthetic images without collecting additional data. We empirically evaluate our method in robot navigation and map-free localization where our method shows large performance enhancements. Our calibration method can therefore widen the applicability under various external conditions, serving as a key component for practical panorama-based machine vision systems.

We introduce LDL, a fast and robust algorithm that localizes a panorama to a 3D map using line segments. LDL focuses on the sparse structural information of lines in the scene, which is robust to illumination changes and can potentially enable efficient computation. While previous line-based localization approaches tend to sacrifice accuracy or computation time, our method effectively observes the holistic distribution of lines within panoramic images and 3D maps. Specifically, LDL matches the distribution of lines with 2D and 3D line distance functions, which are further decomposed along principal directions of lines to increase the expressiveness. The distance functions provide coarse pose estimates by comparing the distributional information, where the poses are further optimized using conventional local feature matching. As our pipeline solely leverages line geometry and local features, it does not require costly additional training of line-specific features or correspondence matching. Nevertheless, our method demonstrates robust performance on challenging scenarios including object layout changes, illumination shifts, and large-scale scenes, while exhibiting fast pose search terminating within a matter of milliseconds. We thus expect our method to serve as a practical solution for line-based localization, and complement the well-established point-based paradigm.
