CONCEPTIONAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR A TOWED VESSEL SAFETY KNOWLEDGE SYSTEM

作者: LATORRE, R LESAGE, M Dr. Robert Latorre:received a BSE (Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering) in 1971 and an MSC in 1972 from the University of Michigan. After language training at Middle Language College he studied at the University of Tokyo's Department of Naval Architecture where he received a MSE in 1975 and a doctor of engineering degree in 1978. As an assistant professor at the University of Michigan (1979–1983) Dr. Latorre began his study of towed vessel safety and river tow design. This resulted in a multiyear project sponsored by the U.S. Dept. of Transportation on towed vessel safety. This work was continued after he joined the University of New Orleans where he designed a 38.3m × 4.6m × 0.03–2.1m variable depth towing tank for ship offshore and inland waterway hydrodynamic studies. His research interests include cavitation noise high speed craft design and computational fluid dynamics. During the 1986 academic year he taught as a professor at the University of Tokyo's Mechanical Engineering Department. During this time he began to interact with artificial intelligence robotics and computer vision researchers in Japan. Mauricio Le Sage:received his BSC (bachelor's degree) in 1986. He is a graduate student at the University of New Orleans. His research interests are in the areas of artificial intelligence computer graphics and expert systems. At the time of this paper a joint effort entitled “An Inductive Approach To Plagiarism Detection In Computer Programs” by Gerard K. Rambally and Mauricio Le Sage was pending publication.

作者: CHICKERING, JE QUALLS, WB John E. Chickering:is a systems analyst with American Management Systems Inc. in Arlington Virginia. Mr. Chickering received his BS degree in marine engineering from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point New York in 1981 and his MBA degree in operations research and statistics from the University of Maryland in 1985. He is a licensed third assistant engineer of steam and motor vessels and a member of the Naval Reserve. Mr. Chickering's work includes the design and specification of several management information systems for the U.S. Navy including one that will automate the Navy's engineering drawing management system. Most recently Mr. Chickering has helped develop a workstation for the Navy's Paperless Ship Initiative. William B. Quails:is a management consultant with American Management Systems Inc. in Arlington Virginia. Mr. Quails received his BA degree in English from the Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana in 1977 and his MPA degree in management science from the University of Georgia in 1982. Mr. Quails participated in the design and development of the U.S. Navy's Shipboard Non-tactical ADP Program II (SNAP II). Recently Mr. Quails has participated in the design and development of several knowledge-based computer systems using artificial intelligence programming technologies. Mr. Quails is a member of Pi Alpha Alpha an honorary public affairs and administration society.

作者: HOGGE, SM The author earned her bachelor's of science degree in industrial engineering and operations research from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. While at Virginia Tech she worked in the Robotics Laboratory supporting robotics research sponsored by the National Bureau of Standards. She completed her master's of science in computer science at The Johns Hopkins University. Until this past March Miss Hogge worked at the Naval Surface Weapons Center in Silver Spring Maryland. Her duties included the application of robotics and artificial intelligence to explosive ordnance disassembly mobile robotics remote controlled fire fighting vehicles human factors expert systems computer enhanced decision-making aids and hardware security. She published a two-volume study discussing shipboard operational applications of robotics and AI. In addition her publications include nine recent journal articles on robotics and computer security. Miss Hogge is currently employed with Automaker Inc. in Houston Texas. Her current role is manager of all government related robotic operations and vision systems. Miss Hogge's projects at Automaker include: an explosive ordnance disassembly gantry robot system a vision inspection system to examine bearings 3-part camouflage spray painting an investigation of the use of robotic welding in Navy shipyards and rework facilities and epoxy spray painting of missile radomes.
