Flocks of animals represent a fascinating archetype of collective behavior in the macroscopic classical world, where the constituents, such as birds, concertedly perform motions and actions as if being one single entity. Here, we address the outstanding question of whether flocks can also form in the microscopic world at the quantum level. For that purpose, we introduce the concept of active quantum matter by formulating a class of models of active quantum particles on a one-dimensional lattice. We provide both analytical and large-scale numerical evidence that these systems can give rise to quantum flocks. A key finding is that these flocks, unlike classical ones, exhibit distinct quantum properties by developing strong quantum coherence over long distances. We propose that quantum flocks could be experimentally observed in Rydberg atom arrays. Our work paves the way towards realizing the intriguing collective behaviors of biological active particles in quantum matter systems. We expect that this opens up a path towards a yet totally unexplored class of nonequilibrium quantum many-body systems with unique properties. © 2023, CC BY.

In-beam γ-ray spectroscopy of Xe131 was carried out to study the structure of the intruder νh11/2 band. Excited states were populated via an α-induced fusion-evaporation reaction at Eα=38MeV. Inspection of γγ-coincidence data resulted in the identification of a new rotational sequence. Based on the systematics of excitation energy, assigned spin-parity, decay pattern, and the electromagnetic character of the interband ΔI=1 γ transitions, this sequence is proposed as the unfavored signature partner of the νh11/2 band. The structure of this band is further illuminated in the light of the triaxial particle rotor model (TPRM). The possibility of wobbling excitation in N=77 Xe-Ba-Ce isotones was explored in a systematic manner.

The present study numerically investigates the effects of phase change materials (PCMs) in chambers of different shapes on the thermal management of cylindrical li-ion batteries (ClIB). A battery cell in a PCM-filled chamber inside an air-cooled system was simulated two-dimensionally in a transient state. An Organic PCM with graphene nanoparticles (NPs) was employed. Square, circular, triangular, lozenge, and hexagonal chambers were tested at different airflow velocities . The finite element method (FEM) approach was used to implement the numerical simulations. The ClIB temperature, heat transfer coefficient (HTC), melting PCM content, and the output temperature ( T OU ) of the cooling system were studied at different airflow velocities and PCM volume fractions at different times for different PCM shapes. It was found that a rise in the airflow velocity decreased the average ClIB temperature ( T AVE − B ) and T OU and increased the HTC of the PCM chamber. The ClIB within a triangular chamber was observed to have the lowest temperature and largest HTC; on the other hand, the lozenge chamber had the lowest heat transfer. The triangular chamber led to 63% higher heat transfer compared to the lozenge chamber. The addition of graphene NPs at a volume fraction of 4% to the PCM improved the HTC by 65% at 5000 s.

Spin glasses are quintessential examples of complex matter. Although much about their order remains uncertain, abstract models of them inform, e.g., the classification of combinatorial optimization problems, the magnetic ordering in metals with impurities, and artificial intelligence—where they form a mathematical basis for neural network computing and brain modeling. We demonstrate the ability of an active quantum gas microscope to realize a spin glass of a novel driven-dissipative and vector form. By microscopically visualizing its glassy spin states, the technique allows us to directly measure replica symmetry breaking and the resulting ultrametric hierarchical structure. Ultrametricity is known to be emergent in models of evolution, protein folding, climate change, and infinite-range equilibrium spin glasses;this work shows it to be directly observable in a physically realized system. We introduce a new general identifiable framework for principled disentanglement referred to as Structured Nonlinear Independent Component Analysis (SNICA). Our contribution is to extend the identifiability theory of deep generative models for a very broad class of structured models. While previous works have shown identifiability for specific classes of time-series models, our theorems extend this to more general temporal structures as well as to models with more complex structures such as spatial dependencies. In particular, we establish the major result that identifiability for this framework holds even in the presence of noise of unknown distribution. Finally, as an example of our framework’s flexibility, we introduce the first nonlinear ICA model for time-series that combines the following very useful properties: it accounts for both nonstationarity and autocorrelation in a fully unsupervised setting;performs dimensionality reduction;models hidden states;and enables principled estimation and inference by variational maximum-likelihood. © 2021, CC BY.

Geomorphic imprints of long- and short-term deformation in the Kachchh Intraplate Region (Western India)

The Kachchh basin stands out among intraplate regions for having experienced two of the most significant intraplate earthquakes within 200 years: the 1819 Allah Bund earthquake (Mw 7.8) and the 2001 Bhuj earthquake (Mw 7.6). The latter occurred just north of a previously unidentified fault near the region's longest-running fault, i.e., the Kachchh Mainland Fault (KMF). despite numerous surveys conducted after the 2001 event, no primary rupture was observed along this discontinuity, raising significant questions about the KMF's deformational patterns. This study aims to decipher regional tectonic perturbations throughout the Northern Hill Range (NHR), focusing on the deformational front associated with the KMF and identifying distinctive geomorphic indicators of active tectonics. The investigation reveals variation in tectonic activity along the KMF, with more pronounced and recent activity on the central-eastern side of the NHR. This line of research culminated in paleoseismic trenching near the epicentral region of the 2001 Bhuj earthquake, identifying a paleo-event bracketed between 3.44 ka and 1.84 ka BP.

BACKGROUNd:The association between human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) amplification and brain metastasis (BM) in patients having colorectal cancer (CRC) has been suggested but not yet established. This study investigated the expression patterns of HER2, its association with BM, and its prognostic value in patients having CRC. METHOdS:We retrospectively identified 99 patients having metastatic CRC (mCRC) and BM (the BM cohort) and compared them with a cohort of 249 patients having mCRC and without BM (the stage IV cohort) by propensity score matching. Immunohistochemical studies of HER2 on all available paraffin-embedded tumour samples, either from the primary tumour, the metastasis (brain and/or extracranial sites) or both, were performed and analysed. HER2 fluorescent in situ hybridisation was applied when necessary. The expression of HER2 was compared and correlated with survival. RESUlTS:HER2 amplifications were detected in 16 (18.4%) of 87 and 9 (3.6%) of 249 patients who had specimens available in the BM and stage IV cohorts, respectively (P < .001). After propensity score matching, HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM (odds ratio: 5.38, P = .003). HER2 heterogeneity was frequently observed not only at the single tumour level but also in paired tumour samples. A marginally significant longer survival since BM was found in patients having HER2-amplified mCRC than in those without (P = .07). CONClUSIONS:HER2 amplification was significantly associated with BM in patients having mCRC and might have prognostic value for survival since BM. Given the heterogeneity of HER2 expression, the testing of HER2 status on available tissues from both primary and metastatic tumours should be encouraged.

The increasing utilization of data centers across generations, fueled by the automation and digitization of numerous services, emphasizes the crucial importance of workload estimation. As these centers play an increasingly central role, optimizing resource usage becomes paramount. This paper explores the critical aspect of workload prediction and its impact on efficiency and costs within data centers. The study examines existing literature on workload estimation and introduces a new long short-term memory (lSTM) model designed for workload prediction. The research relies on a dataset collected within the lUSAC laboratory and compares the performance of the proposed lSTM model with other approaches documented in the literature. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the model in accurate workload prediction and estimation, addressing the needs of cloud users for the allocation of necessary data center resources. The evaluation employs various precision measures to highlight the capability of the developed model in workload estimation.
