A lunar regolith in-situ analysis payload deploying a mass spectrometer is proposed to exactly detect the water ice of the South Pole of the moon for China future lunar exploration missions. In order to realize the goal, an airtight heating furnace for volatile extraction from lunar regolith is desired. In this paper, sealing methods for lunar regolith volatile in heating furnace to future proposed in-situ sampling and analysis of lunar samples were investigated based on power requirements, furnace closing accuracy requirements, dust tolerance and operation in the Lunar environment. Methods implemented include a balanced metal hollow ring seal, a double channel ferrule tab ring radial seal and a spring energized seal. Comparing the performance of sealing methods under the above conditions, a spring energized seal is selected as the heating furnace seal. The materials and structure of the seal are designed based on the rigidity requirements, leakage rate requirements and working environment requirements. In order to test the sealing performance of seals after repeated sealing in high and low temperature environments, a seal leak detection system was designed. The test results indicate that the seal can meet the sealing performance requirements after repeated sealing at various temperatures. © 2023 IEEE.

3D structure reconstruction of plant-based meat substitute through X-ray microscopy method

Objectives The texture of plant-based meat substitute is closely related to its microstructure. X-ray microscopy (XRM) is a non-destructive imaging technology that can provide high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) images of the internal structure of objects. XRM can visualize the 3D structure of meat-like fibrous structure and realize 3D reconstruction of fibrous structure. Methods This research method provides a more comprehensive spatial characterization of the plant protein fibrous structure formation process by 3D analysis through several steps of plant-based meat substitute preparation, freeze-drying and XRM measurement of the extrudate. Expected Outcomes The non-invasive nature of XRM makes it possible to visualize the internal structure without destroying fibrous structure. The research results provide new research methods and theoretical basis for the study of “plant-based meat substitute” and other foods.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) plays a vital role in brain science as it measures and maps brain activity through the analysis of blood flow changes, offering valuable insights into cognitive functions and neural processes. However, due to the intricacy and dynamism of brain activity, conventional approaches failed to accurately predict the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) time series in fMRI data. To tackle this issue, we proposed an end-to-end adversarial U-network (AUN) to verify the predictability of existing BOLD signals in primary cortex (i.e., primary visual, primary motor and primary sensory) and higher cortex(i.e., dorsolateral prefrontal and posterior cingulate). The model combined the U-network architecture and adversarial strategy to ensure that the predicted results capture both the intricate nonlinear details and the overall distribution characteristics. We performed the experiment using the Human Connectome Project (HCP) database. The results demonstrated the predictability of both primary and higher cortex, with primary cortex showing higher predictability. Additionally, the AUN performed better than other popular methods. We also found the improvement in dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) metrics through accurate prediction. The above results confirm the feasibility of predicting BOLD signals and their potential application in clinical settings.1 © 2023 IEEE.

Microenvironment engineering of nitrogen-doped hollow carbon spheres encapsulated with Pd catalysts for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation of biomass-derived vanillin in water

Development of efficient and stable metal catalysts for the selective aqueous phase hydrodeoxygenation(HDO)of biomass-derived oxygenates to value-added biofuels is highly *** innovative surface microenvironment modulation strategy was used to construct the nitrogen-doped hollow carbon sphere encapsulated with Pd(Pd@NHCS-X,X:600–800)nanoreactors for catalytic HDO of biomass-derived vanillin in *** specific surface microenvironments of Pd@NHCS catalysts including the electronic property of active Pd centers and the surface wettability and porous structure of NHCS supports could be well-controlled by the calcination temperature of *** kinetic evaluations demonstrated that the Pd@NHCS-600 catalyst presented a high turnover frequency of 337.77 h^(–1)and a low apparent activation energy of 18.63 kJ/*** excellent catalytic HDO performance was attributed to the unique surface microenvironment of Pd@NHCS catalyst based on structure-performance relationship analysis and DFT *** revealed that pyridinic N species dominated the electronic property regulation of Pd sites through electronic metal-support interaction(EMSI)and produced numerous electron-rich active Pd centers,which not only intensified the dissociation and activation of H2 molecules,but also substantially improved the activation capability of vanillin via the enhanced adsorption of–C=O *** fine hydrophilicity and abundant porous structure promoted the uniform dispersion of catalyst and ensured the effective access of reactants to catalytic active centers in ***,the Pd@NHCS-600 catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic stability and broad substrate applicability for the selective aqueous phase HDO of various biomass-derived carbonyl *** proposed surface microenvironment modulation strategy will provide a new consideration for the rational design of high-performance nitrogen-doped carbon-supported metal catalysts for catalytic biomass transformat

Cotton is an irreplaceable economic crop currently domesticated in the human world for its extremely elongated fiber cells specialized in seed epidermis,which makes it of high research and application *** date,numerous research on cotton has navigated various aspects,from multi-genome assembly,genome editing,mechanism of fiber development,metabolite biosynthesis,and analysis to genetic *** and 3D genomic studies reveal the origin of cotton species and the spatiotemporal asymmetric chromatin structure in *** multiple genome editing systems,such as CRISPR/Cas9,Cas12(Cpf1)and cytidine base editing(CBE),have been widely used in the study of candidate genes affecting fiber *** on this,the cotton fiber cell development network has been preliminarily *** them,the MYB-b HLH-WDR(MBW)transcription factor complex and IAA and BR signaling pathway regulate the initiation;various plant hormones,including ethylene,mediated regulatory network and membrane protein overlap fine-regulate *** transcription factors targeting Ces A 4,7,and 8 specifically dominate the whole process of secondary cell wall *** fluorescently labeled cytoskeletal proteins can observe real-time dynamic changes in fiber ***,research on the synthesis of cotton secondary metabolite gossypol,resistance to diseases and insect pests,plant architecture regulation,and seed oil utilization are all conducive to finding more high-quality breeding-related genes and subsequently facilitating the cultivation of better cotton *** review summarizes the paramount research achievements in cotton molecular biology over the last few decades from the above aspects,thereby enabling us to conduct a status review on the current studies of cotton and provide strong theoretical support for the future direction.

FeTiOx has been recognized as an environmental-friendly and cost-effective catalyst for selective catalytic reduction(SCR)of NOx with *** at further improving the low-temperature DeNOx efficiency of FeTiOx catalyst,a simple strategy of CeO_(2) doping was *** low-temperature(<250°C)NH3-SCR activity of FeTiOx catalyst could be dramatically enhanced by CeO2 doping,and the optimal composition of the catalyst was confirmed as FeCe_(0.2)TiOx,which performed a NOx conversion of 90%at ca.200°*** to X-ray diffraction(XRD),Raman spectra and X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy(XAFS)analysis,FeCe_(0.2)TiOx showed low crystallinity,with Fe and Ce species well mixed with each *** on the fitting results of extended X-ray absorption fine structure(EXAFS),a unique Ce-O-Fe structure was formed in FeCe_(0.2)TiOx *** well improved specific surface area and the newly formed Ce-O-Fe structure dramatically contributed to the improvement of the redox property of FeCe_(0.2)TiOx catalyst,which was well confirmed by H2-temperature-programmed reduction(H2-TPR)and in situ XAFS *** enhanced redox capability could benefit the activation of NO and NH_(3) at low temperatures for NOx *** detailed reaction mechanism study further suggested that the facile oxidative dehydrogenation of NH_(3) to highly reactive-NH_(2) played a key role in enhancing the low-temperature NH_(3)-SCR performance of FeCe_(0.2)TiOx catalyst.

Plant above-ground biomass and litter quality drive soil microbial metabolic limitations during vegetation restoration of subtropical forests

Changes in litter quality(carbon:nitrogen,C:N)and above-ground biomass(AGB)following vegetation restoration significantly impact soil physicochemical properties,yet their effects on soil microbial metabolic limitations remain *** measured litter quality,AGB,soil physicochemical properties,and extracellular enzyme activity(EEA)along a vegetation restoration gradient(7,14,49,70 years,and nearly climax evergreen broadleaved forests)in southern *** also evaluated soil microbial metabolic limitations by a vector analysis of the *** revealed the soil microbial metabolisms were co-limited by C and phosphorus(P).The microbial C limitation initially decreased(before 14 years)and then increased,while the microbial P limitation initially increased(before 49 years)and then *** least squares path modeling(PLS-PM)showed that the microbial C limitation was mainly attributed to microbial C use efficiency induced by litter quality,suggesting that microorganisms may transfer cellular energy between microbial growth and Cacquiring enzyme *** microbial P limitation was primarily correlated with AGB-driven change in soil elements and their stoichiometry,highlighting the importance of nutrient stoichiometry and balance in microbial *** shifts between microbial C and P limitations and the strong connections of plant–soil-microbe processes during vegetation restoration revealed here will provide us with helpful information for optimal management to achieve forest restoration success.

This is one of our series works on discrete energy analysis of the variable-step BDF *** this part,we present stability and convergence analysis of the third-order BDF(BDF3)schemes with variable steps for linear diffusion equations,see,e.g.,[SIAM ***.,58:2294-2314]and[***.,90:1207-1226]for our previous works on the BDF2 *** this aim,we first build up a discrete gradient structure of the variable-step BDF3 formula under the condition that the adjacent step ratios are less than 1.4877,by which we can establish a discrete energy dissipation ***-robust stability and convergence analysis in the L^(2) norm are then *** the mesh robustness means that the solution errors are well controlled by the maximum time-step size but independent of the adjacent time-step *** also present numerical tests to support our theoretical results.
