Molecular structure and pasting, rheological, and digestive properties of a novel small granular starch obtained from Chlorella sorokiniana cultivated under a nutrition-limited condition

In this study, the accumulation of starch in Chlorella sorokiniana was promoted by cultivation under a nutrition-limited condition in a photoautotrophic mode, and the starch was isolated from microalgal cells disrupted by high pressure homogenization. The molecular structure and rheological, pasting, and digestive properties of Chlorella sorokiniana starch (CSS) were subsequently characterized. Chlorella sorokiniana was a new source of small granular starch with a particle size smaller than quinoa starch (QS). CSS had a lower content of short amylopectin branch chains and a higher level of long amylopectin branch chains than QS and common cereal starch including rice starch (RS), wheat starch (WS), and corn starch (CS). CSS presented an A-type crystal structure. CSS had a lower relative crystallinity and molecular short-order degree compared to potato starch (PS), CS, and WS. CSS presented a lower thickness of semi-crystalline and crystalline lamellae than CS, WS, and QS. The RVA pasting and rheological profiles of CSS differed from those of PS, WS, CS, and RS, as demonstrated by the relatively low final viscosity, G′, and G″ for CSS. Additionally, the raw CSS exhibited a higher level of rapidly digestible starch and a lower percentage of resistant starch compared to PS, CS, WS, and RS. This study focused on new sources of starch, and aimed to reveal the molecular structure as well as the rheological, pasting, and digestive characteristics of CSS.

Aiming at the problems of the traditional flywheel energy storage system(FESS), such as low power density, long axial length of the motor, and serious coupling between torque and suspension force, an improved flywheel energy storage system is studied in this paper. An improved 12/14 poles bearingless switched reluctance motor(BSRM) is used in the system, and some permanent magnets are inserted into the stator yoke between the stator and suspension poles of the motor. On the basis of the analysis of it's principle and structure, with the aid of finite element analysis software, the inductor, the air gap flux density and torque and radial force are studied and analysised, the structure has the advantages of self-decoupling, short magnetic circuit and small suspension current and stable suspension, which is convenient to simplify the control strategy and realize the high-speed operation of the motor. Through finite element simulation analysis, the characteristics of the motor are verified [1] .

Precise characterization and analysis of iris shape from Anterior Segment OCT (AS-OCT) are of great importance in facilitating diagnosis of angle-closure-related diseases. Existing methods focus solely on analyzing structural properties identified from an individual 2D slice, while accurate characterization of morphological changes of iris shape in 3D AS-OCT may be able to reveal in addition the risk of disease progression. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for reconstruction and quantification of 3D iris surface from AS-OCT volume. We consider it to be the first work to detect angle-closure glaucoma by means of 3D representation. An iris segmentation network with wavelet refinement block (WRB) is first proposed to generate the initial shape of the iris from single AS-OCT slice. The 3D iris surface is then reconstructed using a guided optimization method with Poisson-disk sampling. Finally, a set of surface-based features are extracted, which are used in detecting of angle-closure glaucoma. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is highly effective in iris segmentation and surface reconstruction. Moreover, we show that 3D-based representation achieves better performance in angle-closure glaucoma detection than does 2D-based feature. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Electro-activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) based on the cathode represents a highly promising advanced oxidation process; however, its longevity is constrained by cathode leaching. In this work, we demonstrate that the γ-FeOOH/Fe Foam and α-Fe 2 O 3 /Fe Foam obtained by engineering a protective layer containing iron and oxygen on Fe Foam exhibit significantly extended service life of 53 h and 47 h, 2.94-fold and 2.61-fold longer than that of the original Fe Foam (18 h), while showing similar pseudo-first-order kinetics. Structural evolution analysis and density functional theory simulations reveal that surface oxygen plays a crucial role in reducing the leaching of Fe from the cathode by immobilizing Fe ions and converting them in-situ into stable Fe 3 O 4 . The electro-activation mechanism of PDS on the cathode, the degradation pathways of atrazine (ATZ), and the effects of operating conditions are systematically investigated and elucidated. This work underscores the pivotal role of surface oxygen in prolonging the longevity of Fe-based cathodes, thereby contributing to the development of protective layers.

Chemometric assessment of quality biomarkers in Camellia oleifera seed oils in the leading production regions of China

Camellia oleifera seed oil exhibits regional quality heterogeneity due to geographical origins. To establish origin-discriminant biomarkers, an integrated chemometric strategy combining gas chromatography (GC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was applied to 117 samples from the leading producing regions of China, analyzing a 43-parameter set, comprising 40 quality biomarkers and 3 geographical factors. Principal component analysis (PCA) distinguished three distinct production regions, while hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) classified the samples into four groups. Orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) elucidated pairwise subgroup differences, and identified five key biomarkers—monoallyl sterol, total sterol, β-sitosterol, stigmast-7-en-3-ol, and elevation—with statistical validation (variable importance in projection (VIP) > 1, and P  < 0.05). These biomarkers enable region-specific discrimination of oil quality stratification, providing a chemically traceable solution to geographical authentication. This strategy establishes innovative authentication protocols and quality control frameworks, supporting sustainable development of the camellia oil industry.

Astrometric observations of a near-Earth object using the image fusion technique

The precise astrometric observation of small near-Earth objects (NEOs) is an important observational research topic in the astrometric discipline, which greatly promotes multidisciplinary research, such as the origin and evolution of the solar system, the detection and early warning of small NEOs, and deep-space navigation. The characteristics of small NEOs, such as faintness and fast moving speed, restrict the accuracy and precision of their astrometric observations. In the paper, we present a method to improve the accurate and precise astrometric positions of NEOs based on image fusion technique. The noise analysis and astrometric test from the observed images of the open cluster M23 are given. Using the image fusion technique, we obtain the sets of superimposed images and original images containing reference stars and moving targets respectively. The final fused image set includes background stars with high signal-to-noise ratios and ideal NEO images simultaneously and avoids the saturation of background stars. Using the fused images, we can reduce the influence of telescope tracking and NEO ephemeris errors on astrometric observations, and our results indicate that the accuracy and precision of NEO Eros astrometry are improved obviously after we choose suitable image fuse mode. The environmental implication of diatom fossils in the surface sediment of the Changjiang River estuary(CRE) and its adjacent area

In order to depict the distribution of diatom fossils in surface sediments and to establish a reliable reference data for further paleoenvironmental study in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River estuary and its adjacent waters, the diatom fossils from 34 surface sediment samples and their relationship with environmental variables were analyzed by principal component analysis and redundancy correspondence analysis. The diversity and abundance of diatom fossils were analyzed. Some annual average parameters of the overlying water (salinity, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, depth, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, dissolved inorganic phosphate and dissolved inorganic silicate) were measured at each sampling site. A total of 113 diatom taxa and one silicoflagellate species were identified in the investigation area. Diatom fossils were better preserved in fine sediments. The absolute abundance of diatom fossils did not significantly diff er between inshore and off shore areas, the species diversity decreased from inshore to off shore. This may be because high nutrients and low salinity promoted the growth of more brackish species in coastal waters. The diatom taxa were divided into three groups, on the basis of their response and indication to environmental changes. For example, Actinocyclus ehrenbergii and Cyclotella stylorum were dominant in coastal waters (Group 1 and Group 3) with high nutrients and low salinity;the relative abundances of Paralia sulcata and Podosira stelliger were significantly higher in off shore sites (Group 2, average 39.5%), which were characterized by high salinity and deep water. Four environmental variables (salinity, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, temperature and water depth) explained the composition and distribution of diatom taxa independently ( P< 0.05), this finding can be applied in further paleoenvironmental reconstruction research in this area.

Paper mulberry(Broussonetia papyrifera)is a well-known woody tree historically used for Cai Lun papermaking,one of the four great inventions of ancient *** recently,Paper mulberry has also been used as forage to address the shortage of feedstuff because of its digestible crude fiber and high protein *** this study,we obtained a chromosome-scale genome assembly for Paper mulberry using integrated approaches,including Illumina and PacBio sequencing platform as well as Hi-C,optical,and genetic *** assembled Paper mulberry genome consists of 386.83 Mb,which is close to the estimated size,and 99.25%(383.93 Mb)of the assembly was assigned to 13 *** genomic analysis revealed the expansion and contraction in the flavonoid and lignin biosynthetic gene families,respectively,accounting for the enhanced flavonoid and decreased lignin biosynthesis in Paper ***,the increased ratio of syringyl-lignin to guaiacyl-lignin in Paper mulberry underscores its suitability for use in medicine,forage,papermaking,and barkcloth *** also identified the rootassociated microbiota of Paper mulberry and found that Pseudomonas and Rhizobia were enriched in its roots and may provide the source of nitrogen for its stems and leaves via symbiotic nitrogen ***,these results suggest that Paper mulberry might have undergone adaptive evolution and recruited nitrogen-fixing microbes to promote growth by enhancing flavonoid production and altering lignin monomer *** study provides significant insights into genetic basis of the usefulness of Paper mulberry in papermaking and barkcloth making,and as *** insights will facilitate further domestication and selection as well as industrial utilization of Paper mulberry worldwide.

Secondary water supply systems (SWSSs) with low residual chlorine may pose a risk to consumers due to regrowth of some pathogenic microbes. This study investigated how UV pretreatment would affect biofouling of UF membrane when it was used to remove bacteria, in particular opportunistic pathogens (OPs) in SWSSs. Our results indicated that UV pretreatment not only removed the 16S rRNA for total bacteria, but also inactivated OPs and potential human pathogenic bacteria (HPB) effectively, through [[EQUATION]] and [[EQUATION]] when residual chlorine was present in water from SWSSs. After UV-UF treatment, the functional genes related to metabolic diseases and infectious diseases decreased, suggesting a lower microbial risk of SWSSs. After UV pretreatment, the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production and associated β-sheet in the protein of EPS were reduced. Foulant analysis indicated that biofilms formed on the UF membrane after UV pretreatment had visible crevices and small pores, a lower bacterial volumetric fraction and lower roughness than the untreated UF membrane. This structure improved the UF flux and reduced the biofouling. Thus, UV pretreatment could be used to reduce the potential microbial risk of water from SWSSs, as well as help mitigate biofouling of UF membranes. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this work, we tackle the problem of single image-based 3D shape retrieval (IBSR), where we seek to find the most matched shape of a given single 2D image from a shape repository. Most of the existing works learn to embed 2D images and 3D shapes into a common feature space and perform metric learning using a triplet loss. Inspired by the great success in recent contrastive learning works on self-supervised representation learning, we propose a novel IBSR pipeline leveraging contrastive learning. We note that adopting such cross-modal contrastive learning between 2D images and 3D shapes into IBSR tasks is non-trivial and challenging: contrastive learning requires very strong data augmentation in constructed positive pairs to learn the feature invariance, whereas traditional metric learning works do not have this requirement. Moreover, object shape and appearance are entangled in 2D query images, thus making the learning task more difficult than contrasting single-modal data. To mitigate the challenges, we propose to use multi-view grayscale rendered images from the 3D shapes as a shape representation. We then introduce a strong data augmentation technique based on color transfer, which can significantly but naturally change the appearance of the query image, effectively satisfying the need for contrastive learning. Finally, we propose to incorporate a novel category-level contrastive loss that helps distinguish similar objects from different categories, in addition to classic instance-level contrastive loss. Our experiments demonstrate that our approach achieves the best performance on all the three popular IBSR benchmarks, including Pix3D, Stanford Cars, and Comp Cars, outperforming the previous state-of-the-art from 4% - 15% on retrieval accuracy.
