On torque reversal during delayed spin up glitch of SGR 1935+2154

Ge et al. reported a peculiar large glitch observed from SGR 1935 recently (Ge et al. 2022). Interestingly, this glitch occurred about 3.1 ± 2.5 days before FRB 200428, accompanied by a delayed spin up (DSU) process with a timescale of 8 ± 1 days. This DSU is the first one detected from magnetars unambiguously, previously, DSU has only been detected from large glitches of the young Crab pulsar. Strikingly, this DSU even resulted in torque reversal, i.e., the spin down state of SGR 1935 was turned into a spin up one within 8 ± 1 days, the first case observed from isolated neutron stars as far as we know. What’s more, the average positive torque is consistent in value and order of magnitude with those deduced from DSUs observed from the Crab pulsar. The coincidences of DSU appearance and consistent positive torque in the Crab pulsar and SGR 1935 suggest that, these DSUs have the same physical origin and should be analyzed simultaneously. Joint analysis on DSUs from the Crab pulsar and SGR 1935 suggests a physical origin independent of (at least not directly dependent on) rotational parameters. If this new DSU and torque reversal phenomena be further confirmed and accretion be excluded convincingly, nearly all models regarding DSU phenomenon under the framework of vortex motion should be reconsidered, new physics will be required. We stress that, joint analysis on DSUs from different pulsars with different rotational parameters may provide pivotal clue to reveal their physical origin, even neutron star equation of state and the triggering mechanism(s) of (galactic) fast radio bursts ultimately. East Africa's air pollution levels are deteriorating due to biomass burning and unfavorable weather conditions. This study investigates spatiotemporal changes in air pollution and quantitatively explores relative contributions of potential influencing factors and their interactions with air pollution dynamics in East Africa from 2001 to 2021. The result revealed that air pollution effect experienced an increasing (decreasing) trend in PHS (PCS) with values of -5.415E-4 (3.157E-4) from 2001-2021. The major pollution seasons (HPL1 and HPL2) were correlated with wildfire seasons (DJF and JJA). At an annual scale, spatial OLS analysis between air pollution and 14 response factors found that percentage increase in BA, BCS, OCS, SOS, and DSC would worsen air pollution. In contrast, negative spatial OLS coefficients of SS, P, RH, WS, SLP, NDVI, PD, and ELV suggest that air pollution would decrease with increase of these variables. The variance presented in ascending order based on their influence is given by DSC(R2=68.93) > SLP(R2=36.59) > RH(R2=24.12) > T(R2=23.78) > SOS(R2=23.16) > BA(R2=20.30) > ELV(R2=7.80) > OCS(R2=4.48) > NDVI(R2=3.21) > BCS(R2=3.04) > WS(R2=2.89) > PD(R2=0.66) > SS(R2=0.55) > P(R2=0.50). The factor interaction detector analysis revealed that DSC (q = 0.681), SOS (q = 0.389), TMP (q = 0.324), and SLP (q = 0.472) showed significant high response power at an annual scale, among all factors that have significant influences on air pollution in the study area. NDVI (q = 0.096), PD (q = 0.012), BCS (q = 0.054), SS (q = 0.078), P (0.093), and OCS (q=0.086) had the least influence on air pollution, which is consistent with the results of the correlation analysis. In conclusion, the study covered the dynamics of air pollution and their influencing factors, spatiotemporal heterogeneity, and interaction between influencing factors. In blockchain ecosystems, an Oracle is a service tool which provides real-world data for smart contracts and other blockchain applications. At present, there are several Oracle implementation schemes, e.g. centralized Oracles, decentralized Oracles, and hardware Oracles. However, these schemes typically suffer from single source of data and low scalability. Application Specific Knowledge Engine (ASKE) is an integrated topic/application-centered knowledge portal that supports effective information retrieval and analysis. Inspired by ASKE, in this paper, we propose a novel Oracle implementation scheme. The proposed scheme can realize multi-source data extraction and analysis, then working prototypes are demonstrated to show the validity of the scheme. © 2019 IEEE.

Chinese walnut (Juglans cathayensis), a wild relative of Persian walnut (Juglans regia), is distinguished by its early maturation and higher resilience to abiotic stress. As a paleopolyploid species, J. cathayensis has undergone at least two whole genome duplications (WGD) and subgenome divergence, which may profoundly affect its phenotype. This study assembled a chromosome-level genome of about 553.7 Mb for J. cathayensis, with the 16 pseudochromosomes categorized into two subgenomes based on their phylogenetic relationship with potential ancestor Myrica rubra hypothesized by cytogenetics. We found that unbalanced burst insertion of long terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR-RTs) resulted in genome expansion and subgenomic divergence. Most homoeologous gene pairings suggested subgenome-biased expression genes (SBEGs) in three organs;however, no dominant subgenome expression model was identified. The resequencing analysis of J. cathayensis and J. regia samples, along with transcriptome and metabolome results, revealed that the species-specific characteristics of J. cathayensis are directly linked to the accumulation of flavonoid metabolism. Moreover, a distinctive deletion (non-frameshift mutation) in the SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CONSTANS1 (SOC1) gene of J. cathayensis probably regulates the early maturation differences between J. cathayensis and other Juglans species. Our study elucidates the genetic mechanisms promoting subgenome divergence and accelerating the utilization of genetic resources in J. cathayensis. © 2025 Society for Experimental Biology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Evaluation method of similarity between two synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images plays a key role in the SAR raw data simulation and the analysis of SAR imaging quality. Although the similarity between two SAR images is intuitive, it still lacks objective and quantitative method to evaluate it. Thus, an evaluation method named Otsu-PHash is proposed in this paper from the perspective of image similarity to solve the problem. The key steps of the proposed Otsu-PHash method are threshold segmentation and similarity comparison. Finally, the numerical experiment verified that our proposed method can be applied to evaluate similarity of the two SAR images.

Lanthanum-hydrogen system and its derivatives remain among the most promising for achieving room-temperature superconductivity. In this study, we examined the formation of ternary lanthanum-scandium superhydrides at pressures up to 220 GPa. The primary product of the LaSc alloy's reaction with hydrogen is newly discovered cubic (La,Sc)H12, demonstrating clear superconducting transition in all six channels of the van der Pauw scheme at 244-248 K. In this compound with an unusually large unit cell volume, virtually no magnetoresistance was observed in fields up to 68 Tesla. Synthesized samples of (La,Sc)H12 demonstrate pronounced superconducting diode and SQUID-like effects at a record high temperature of 233 K. Furthermore, our analysis revealed the possible formation of lower hexagonal polyhydrides (La,Sc)H6-7, which could potentially account for the drop in electrical resistance observed near 274 K. This anomaly between 265-290 K also appears in the radio-frequency transmission measurements and may be of a superconducting nature. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

To study the role of the multiple scattering effect of ice particles when retrieving the microphysical parameters of cirrus using millimeter-wave radar, spherical and non-spherical ice particles' models with gamma size distributions were first established. Then, the XFDTD (X Finite Difference Time Domain) software, GMM (Generalized Multi-particle Mie) and simple addition method were used to calculate the radar cross section(RCS) values for the ice particle models at 94 GHz. Therefore, multiple scattering effects must be considered in practical meteorological detection.

Cross-modality person re-identification with shared-specific feature transfer

Cross-modality person re-identification (cm-ReID) is a challenging but key technology for intelligent video analysis. Existing works mainly focus on learning modality-shared representation by embedding different modalities into a same feature space, lowering the upper bound of feature distinctiveness. In this paper, we tackle the above limitation by proposing a novel cross-modality shared-specific feature transfer algorithm (termed cm-SSFT) to explore the potential of both the modality-shared information and the modality-specific *** model the affinities of different modality samples according to the shared features and then transfer both shared and specific features among and across modalities. We also propose a complementary feature learning strategy including modality adaption, project adversarial learning and reconstruction enhancement to learn discriminative and complementary shared and specific features of each modality, respectively. The entire cm-SSFT algorithm can be trained in an end-to-end manner. We conducted comprehensive experiments to validate the superiority of the overall algorithm and the effectiveness of each component. The proposed algorithm significantly outperforms state-of-the-arts by 22.5% and 19.3% mAP on the two mainstream benchmark datasets SYSUMM01 and RegDB, respectively. Copyright © 2020, The Authors.
