Short-chain PFASs dominance and their environmental transport dynamics in urban water systems: Insights from multimedia transport analysis and human exposure risk

The increasing prevalence of short-chain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) poses significant challenges for urban water systems (UWS) due to their persistence, high mobility, and widespread occurrence. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the occurrence, environmental transport, influencing factors, removal efficiency, and human health risks of PFASs across UWS impacted by industrial activities. Regulatory restrictions on long-chain PFASs have led to their replacement with short-chain analogues, resulting in their dominance in effluents from manufacturing plant parks (MPPs), with concentrations ranging from 30.28 to 3738.51 ng/L (mean: 557.68 ± 1072.03 ng/L). Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) serve as both sources and sinks of PFASs, with a negative average removal efficiency (–47.4 %) and an estimated annual discharge of 12.29 kg of PFASs into the environment. Downstream of WWTP, PFASs concentrations in rivers decrease exponentially due to dilution and sediment partitioning; however, short-chain PFASs persist over long distances due to their high aqueous mobility. While the detected PFAS levels in rivers pose low health risks to humans, they present low to medium ecological risks to aquatic organisms, particularly algae, invertebrates, and fish. Advanced statistical analyses using piecewise structural equation modeling (piecewiseSEM) and co-occurrence network analysis (CNA) identified key environmental drivers of PFASs behavior, including heavy metals (effect size: 0.70), nutrient levels (0.36), and physicochemical parameters (–0.52). Furthermore, drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) demonstrated limited removal efficiency, with tap water concentrations ranging from 27.95 to 84.72 ng/L, exceeding the regulatory limits set by the US EPA (2022) (PFOA: 0.004 ng/L, PFOS: 0.02 ng/L) and Health Canada (Σ 25 PFAS: 30 ng/L). Adjacent Channel Interference Modeling of Single Vibration Point on Multichannel Dynamic Pressure Sensors

Pulse waves of a radial artery under different pressures applied through a cuff play an important role in disease diagnosis, especially in traditional chinese medicine (TCM). Pulse waves could be collected by a pressure sensor array affixed to an inflatable cuff. During a process of collecting pulse waves, one sensor of a sensor array moves up and down when the sensor is shocked by a pulse wave. Movement of the sensor leads to the passive displacement of other nearby sensors because of a connecting structure between them. Then, vibration signals will be generated by the nearby sensors although these sensors do not receive radial artery pulse waves. These vibration signals considered an interference are usually superimposed on real signals obtained from these nearby sensors and degrade signal quality. The problem mentioned above does not only generally exist in a pressure sensor array attached to a wristband but also is easy to ignore. This paper proposes a novel interference suppression algorithm based on Welch's method for estimating and weakening adjacent sensor channel interference to overcome the problem. At first, a sensor array attached to an inflatable cuff and a vibration generator is proposed to establish an experimental platform for simplifying the pulse wave collection process. Then, the interference suppression algorithm is proposed according to mechanical analysis and Welch's method based on the proposed sensor array and vibration generator. Next anti-interference abilities of the algorithm based on a simplified process are evaluated by different vibration frequencies and applied pressures. The anti-interference abilities of the algorithm based on pulse waves of the radial artery are evaluated indirectly. The results show that the novel interference suppression algorithm could weaken adjacent sensor channel interference and upgrade the signal quality. © 2020 Xingguang Geng et al.

Currently, the dimidiate pixel model is used in most studies to discuss vegetation fractional coverage (VFC) and explore its relationship with urban heat islands. Few studies have used the three-component pixel model to invert vegetation fractional coverage (VFC) and discuss the relationship between VFC and the differentiation effect of the surface thermal environment in mining-intensive areas. In this study, VFC was inverted based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI)-dry fuel index (DFI) three-component pixel model using Landsat satellite remote sensing images from 2000 to 2018. Mixed pixels were decomposed into photosynthetic vegetation (PV), non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), and bare soil (BS). The radiative transfer equation (RTE) was used to invert the surface temperature. The basic principle of this method is to remove the atmospheric influence and use the atmospheric radiation transfer equation;surface heat radiation intensity observed by the satellite is converted to the corresponding surface temperature. The parameters involved are mainly atmospheric profile parameters and surface specific emissivity. Heat-island index (HI) was used to grade the mean LST of the 2000-2018 study area. The relationship between the spatial-temporal changes in VFC and the differentiation effect of the surface thermal environment in the study area was analyzed using hierarchical statistics, a red-blue difference image method, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. On this basis, the influence mechanism of spatial-temporal variation in the VFC on the differentiation effect of surface thermal environment was studied. The results showed that the NDVI-DFI feature space of the study area conformed to the basic assumption of the three-component pixel model. Comparative analysis of time irreversibility and amplitude irreversibility based on joint permutation

Although time irreversibility (TIR) and amplitude irreversibility (AIR) are relevant concepts for nonequilibrium analysis, their association has received little attention. This paper conducts a systematic comparative analysis of the relationship between TIR and AIR based on statistical descriptions and numerical simulations. To simplify the quantification of TIR and AIR, the amplitude permutation and global information of the associated vector are combined to produce a joint probability estimation. Chaotic logistic, Henon, and Lorenz series are generated to evaluate TIR and AIR according to surrogate theory, and the distributions of joint permutations for these model series are measured to compare the degree of TIR and AIR. The joint permutation TIR and AIR are then used to investigate nonequilibrium pathological features in epileptic electroencephalography data. Test results suggest that epileptic brain electrical activities, particular those during the onset of seizure, manifest higher nonequilibrium characteristics. According to the statistical definitions and targeted pairs of joint permutations in the chaotic model data, TIR and AIR are fundamentally different nonequilibrium descriptors from time- and amplitude-reversibility, respectively, and thus require different forms of numerical analysis. At the same time, TIR and AIR both provide measures for fluctuation theorems associated with nonequilibrium processes, and have similar probabilistic differences in the pairs of joint permutations and consistent outcomes when used to analyze both the model series and real-world signals. Overall, comparative analysis of TIR and AIR contributes to our understanding of nonequilibrium features and broadens the scope of quantitative nonequilibrium measures. A novel iridium-needle electrode (Ir-NE) functionalized with agarose gel (AG-gel) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was fabricated and adopted for the real-time in situ monitoring of natural labile copper (Cu′) in the culture medium of marine diatom. AuNPs possessed excellent electro-catalytic capacity towards the voltammetric determination of Cu, and AG-gel acted as the protective layer which enhanced the stability and lifespan of the electrode. The separation-catalysis detection mechanism based on the AG-gel and AuNPs made the electrode both high sensitivity and excellent anti-biofouling capability. In addition, the AG-gel/AuNPs/Ir-NE successfully achieved the real-time in situ monitoring of Cu′ in culture medium with Phaeodactylum tricornutum ( P. tricornutum ) as the model organism for marine diatoms. The correlation analysis between the concentrations of different Cu species and P. tricornutum cell density indicated that Cu′ or the Cu′ to total dissolved Cu (TdCu) ratio (Cu'/TdCu) might be a more accurate indicator of the bioavailability of Cu to marine diatom than TdCu. Furthermore, this electrode might also be extended to the real-time in situ determination of other labile metals in the culture medium of different microalgae, which provides an effective technique for studying feedback interactions between metals and algae.

Given imperfect channel state information(CSI)and considering the interference from the primary transmitter,an underlay cognitive multisource multidestination relay network is proposed.A closed-form exact outage probability and asymptotic outage probability are derived for the secondary system of the *** results show that the outage probability is influenced by the source and destination number,the CSI imperfection as well as the interference from the primary transmitter,while the diversity order is independent of the CSI imperfection and the interference from the primary transmitter,yet it is equal to the minimum of the source and destination ***,extensive simulations are conducted with different system parameters to verify the theoretical analysis.

The chloroplast genome size ofDendranthema zawadskiiHerbich is 150,995 bp, including a large single-copy region (82,771 bp), a small single-copy region (18,308 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats regions (24,958 bp). Total 112 genes were annotated, including 79 protein-coding genes, four ribosomal RNA genes, and 29 transfer RNA genes. The phylogenetic position ofDendranthema zawadskiiHerbich is close toDendranthema indicum.

We propose an efficient method of generating a vortex beam with multi-foci by using a fractal spiral zone plate(FSZP), which is designed by combining fractal structure with a spiral zone plate(SZP) in the squared radial *** theoretical analysis reveals that the number of foci that embed vortices is significantly increased as compared with that obtained by using a conventional SZP. Furthermore, the influence of topological charge on the intensity distribution in focal plane is also discussed in detail. For experimental investigation, an FSZP with topological charge p = 1 and 6.4 mm diameter is fabricated by using a photo-etching technique. The calibration indicates that the focusing performances of such a kind of zone plane(ZP) accord well with simulations, thereby providing its potential applications in multi-dimensional optical manipulation and optical imaging technology.

The Aerosol and Carbon Detection Lidar (ACDL) on board the Atmospheric Environment Monitoring Satellite (DQ-1) has been successfully operationalized, and it possesses the capability of detecting carbon dioxide, aerosols, and clouds around the world. However, in contrast to other spaceborne lidars currently/previously in operation (e.g., the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation-CALIPSO, the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 mission-ICESat-2 and so on), the ACDL does not incorporate a background signal monitor. Consequently, it is crucial to develop background signal acquisition algorithm for ACDL and to analyze the background characterization. In this paper, a three-segmented background signal acquisition algorithm is designed for ACDL to ensure that the acquired background signals match the instrument characteristics. Additionally, the multi-channel background signals measured by ACDL during daytime and nighttime are characterized in detail, including the features in single profile, along the orbit, on a monthly, semi-annually basis, and particular regions.
