ViF-SD2E: a robust weakly-supervised framework for neural decoding

Neural decoding plays a vital role in the interaction between the brain and the outside world. Our task in this paper is to decode the movement track of a finger directly based on the neural data. Existing neural decoding solutions primarily perform some preprocessing operations on neural data before feeding them into existing models (such as LSTM) for decoding. However, these solutions either are prone to overfitting or cannot well exploit the spatial and temporal information. In our previous observations, there is a symmetrical phenomenon between the unsupervised decoded trajectory and the ground truth trajectory within the activity space. This precisely motivates us to propose (or derive) a robust weakly-supervised framework (or model structure), called ViF-SD2E, for neural decoding. In particular, it consists of a space-division (SD) module and an exploration–exploitation (2E) strategy, to effectively exploit both the spatial information of the outside world and the temporal information of neural activity, where the SD2E output is analogized with the weak 0/1 vision feedback (ViF) label for training. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, which can sometimes be comparable to supervised counterparts. Therefore, we redirect our attention to the information (hidden in data) ViF-SD2E conveys to us. In other words, we believe that the advantage of ViF-SD2E lies in the fact that its processing steps are objectively determined by the inherent attributes (i.e., symmetry) of the neural data, or rather, the model structure is fixed. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

The Earth's climate operates as a complex,dynamically interconnected system,driven by both anthropogenic and natural forcings and modulated by nonlinear interactions and feedback *** study employs a theoretical framework and the Eigen Microstate(EM)approach of statistical physics to examine global surface temperature variations since 1948,as revealed by a global *** identified EMs significantly correlated with key climate phenomena such as the global monsoon system,tropical climates,and El Niñ*** analysis reveals that these EMs have increasingly influenced global surface temperature variations over recent decades,highlighting the critical roles of hemispheric differences,land-sea contrasts,and tropical climate fluctuations in a warming ***,we used model simulations from more than 10 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)under three future climate scenarios to perform a comparative analysis of the changes in each EM *** results indicate that under future warming scenarios,tropical climate fluctuations will become increasingly dominant,while traditional hemispheric and monsoonal patterns may *** shift underscores the importance of understanding tropical dynamics and their impact on global climate from a physics-based *** study provides a new perspective on understanding and addressing global climate change,enhancing the theoretical foundation of this critical field,and yielding findings with significant practical implications for improving climate models and developing effective mitigation and adaptation strategies.

Valuing Training Data via Causal Inference for In-Context Learning

In-context learning (ICL) empowers large pre-trained language models (PLMs) to predict outcomes for unseen inputs without parameter updates. However, the efficacy of ICL heavily relies on the choice of demonstration examples. Randomly selecting from the training set frequently leads to inconsistent performance. Addressing this challenge, this study takes a novel approach by focusing on training data valuation through causal inference. Specifically, we introduce the concept of average marginal effect (AME) to quantify the contribution of individual training samples to ICL performance, encompassing both its generalization and robustness. Drawing inspiration from multiple treatment effects and randomized experiments, we initially sample diverse training subsets to construct prompts and evaluate the ICL performance based on these prompts. Subsequently, we employ Elastic Net regression to collectively estimate the AME values for all training data, considering subset compositions and inference performance. Ultimately, we prioritize samples with the highest values to prompt the inference of the test data. Across various tasks and with seven PLMs ranging in size from 0.8B to 33B, our approach consistently achieves state-of-the-art performance. Particularly, it outperforms Vanilla ICL and the best-performing baseline by an average of 14.1% and 5.2%, respectively. Moreover, prioritizing the most valuable samples for prompting leads to a significant enhancement in performance stability and robustness across various learning scenarios. Impressively, the valuable samples exhibit transferability across diverse PLMs and generalize well to out-of-distribution tasks. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

With the continuous development of drone remote sensing technology, drone networks have garnered widespread attention. The application of drones has expanded from military uses to industrial and civilian sectors, facilitating tasks such as automated combat, production, and rescue operations. However, since drones operate in public environments, their communications are vulnerable to physical attacks and tampering, which can lead to privacy leaks and pose security risks. Additionally, as resource-constrained devices, drones find it difficult to support complex encryption algorithms. To address this issue, this paper proposes a lightweight authentication protocol based on Physical Unclonable Functions (PUF). This protocol leverages PUF to prevent physical capture attacks and enhances system efficiency through hash and XOR operations. Furthermore, trust management technology is applied to further evaluate the network access behavior of drones, ensuring trustworthy access to the drone network. The security of this protocol is verified using the ROR model and AVISPA tool, and informal analysis demonstrates that it meets the security requirements of drone networks. Compared with existing protocols, this protocol shows significant advantages in terms of computational and communication overhead, achieving a good balance between security and efficiency. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). A sharding blockchain-based UAV system for search and rescue missions

Sharding is a promising technique to tackle the critical weakness of scalability in blockchain-based unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)search and rescue(SAR)*** breaking up the blockchain network into smaller partitions called shards that run independently and in parallel,shardingbased UAV systems can support a large number of search and rescue UAVs with improved scalability,thereby enhancing the rescue ***,the lack of adaptability and interoperability still hinder the application of sharded blockchain in UAV SAR *** refers to making adjustments to the blockchain towards real-time surrounding situations,while interoperability refers to making cross-shard interactions at the mission *** address the above challenges,we propose a blockchain UAV system for SAR missions based on dynamic sharding *** from the benefits in scalability brought by sharding,our system improves adaptability by dynamically creating configurable and mission-exclusive shards,and improves interoperability by supporting calls between smart contracts that are deployed on different *** implement a prototype of our system based on Quorum,give an analysis of the improved adaptability and interoperability,and conduct experiments to evaluate the *** results show our system can achieve the above goals and overcome the weakness of blockchain-based UAV systems in SAR scenarios.

Marine dispersion of Fukushima-derived radiocesium in the North Pacific and its implications

A key scientific approach to addressing the environmental radiation risks from Fukushima nuclear contaminated water(FNCW) discharge into the ocean is understanding and predicting the marine dispersion of *** dispersion of radiocesium(CsF:134Cs,137Cs) from the Fukushima nuclear accident in the North Pacific and its marginal seas post-2011 was systematically summarized,focusing on pathways,vertical distribution changes,and transit *** research examined CsFdispersion through the Kuroshio Extension and denser central mode water(D-CMW) to the eastern North Pacific,as well as through subtropical mode water(STMW),lighter central mode water(L-CMW),and D-CMW to the subtropical western North Pacific,China Seas,and Sea of *** considered broader implications of CsFdispersion in light of ongoing FNCW *** this prolonged liquid discharge and Kuroshio Extension’s barrier effect,it is crucial to emphasize the role of CMW besides STMW in transporting FNCW to the subtropical western North Pacific and its marginal *** research should focus on the key mechanism and longitude range of CMW crossing the Kuroshio *** short-lived134Cs decays rapidly during the storage and dispersion of FNCW,long-lived135Cs and135Cs/137Cs ratios can serve as valuable tracers for detecting and quantifying ***,there is an urgent need for high-precision analysis of these key radionuclides and their characteristic *** promptly detect,assess,and respond to FNCW intrusion,continuous monitoring and identification of nuclear pollution sources in key ocean currents and straits are ***,interdisciplinary research integrating monitoring with marginal sea circulation dynamics and high-resolution numerical simulations should be a priority.

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium preparation of Zr-based oxide ceramic layers via in-situ synthesis on ZrNb alloy surfaces

To develop ZrNb alloys with excellent surface properties, phase composition, microstructure evolution, and friction and wear properties of Zr oxide ceramic layers prepared by equilibrium and non-equilibrium techniques were investigated. Non-oxidized samples prepared with same heat treatment process were used as control group. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-photoelectron spectroscopy were employed to further investigate and establish relationships between processing, structure, and properties. There was apparent oxygen-rich diffusion zone between in-situ synthesized Zr-based oxide ceramic layer and ZrNb substrate. High residual stress, fine-grained microstructure due to insufficient growth, and high diffusion rate of elements near oxide/metal interface at 1000 °C resulted in high content of t-ZrO2 in non-equilibrium aqueous oxidation sample. Furthermore, the composition of equilibrium thermal oxidation samples was dominated by m-ZrO2, exhibiting the highest nano-hardness (>14 GPa) and the lowest wear rate (3.40 × 10−8 mm3/N·m). Friction and wear behavior of samples under different surface conditions was investigated. Lastly, stability mechanism of metastable oxide phases and growth mechanism of Zr-based oxides were analyzed and discussed in depth. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.
