Anderson mixing (AM) is a useful method that can accelerate fixed-point iterations by exploring the information from historical iterations. Despite its numerical success in various applications, the memory requirement in AM remains a bottleneck when solving large-scale optimization problems in a resource-limited machine. To address this problem, we propose a novel variant of AM method, called Min-AM, by storing only one vector pair, that is the minimal memory size requirement in AM. Our method forms a symmetric approximation to the inverse Hessian matrix and is proved to be equivalent to the full-memory Type-I AM for solving strongly convex quadratic optimization. Moreover, for general nonlinear optimization problems, we establish the convergence properties of Min-AM under reasonable assumptions and show that the mixing parameters can be adaptively chosen by estimating the eigenvalues of the Hessian. Finally, we extend Min-AM to solve stochastic programming problems. Experimental results on logistic regression and network training problems validate the effectiveness of the proposed Min-AM.

Cobalamin(B_(12)),an essential nutrient and growth cofactor for many living organisms on Earth,can be fully synthesized only by selected prokaryotes in ***,microbial communities related to B_(12) biosynthesis could serve as an example subsystem to disentangle the underlying ecological mechanisms balancing the function and taxonomic make-up of complex functional *** anchoring microbial traits potentially involved in B_(12) biosynthesis,we depict the biogeographic patterns of B_(12) biosynthesis genes and the taxa harboring them in the global ocean,despite the limitations of detecting de novo B_(12) synthesizers via metagenomes *** the taxonomic and functional composition of B_(12) biosynthesis genes were strongly shaped by depth,differentiating the epipelagic zones from the mesopelagic *** genes related to B_(12) biosynthesis were relatively stably distributed across different oceans,but the taxa harboring them varied considerably,showing clear functional redundancy among microbial *** taxa carrying B_(12) biosynthesis genes in the surface water were influenced by environmental factors such as temperature,oxygen,and ***,the composition of functional genes was only weakly associated with these environmental *** model analyses demonstrated that determinism governed the variations in B_(12) biosynthesis genes,whereas a higher degree of stochasticity was associated with taxonomic *** associations were observed between the chlorophyll a concentration and B_(12) biosynthesis,confirming its importance in primary production in the global *** results of this study reveal an essential ecological mechanism governing the assembly of microbes in nature:the environment selects for function rather than taxonomy;functional redundancy underlies stochastic community assembly.

Prediction or comparison: Toward interpretable qualitative reasoning

Qualitative relationships illustrate how changing one property (e.g., moving velocity) affects another (e.g., kinetic energy) and constitutes a considerable portion of textual knowledge. Current approaches use either semantic parsers to transform natural language inputs into logical expressions or a "black-box" model to solve them in one step. The former has a limited application range, while the latter lacks interpretability. In this work, we categorize qualitative reasoning tasks into two types: prediction and comparison. In particular, we adopt neural network modules trained in an end-to-end manner to simulate the two reasoning processes. Experiments on two qualitative reasoning question answering datasets, QuaRTz and QuaRel, show our methods' effectiveness and generalization capability, and the intermediate outputs provided by the modules make the reasoning process interpretable. Multi-choice Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) requires the model to select the correct answer from a set of answer candidates given the corresponding passage and question. Previous studies mainly focus on complex matching networks to model the relationship among options, passage and question. However, these models obtain little improvement over the powerful Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs). In this paper, we propose a simple method to incorporate option knowledge from PLMs and introduce out-of-domain knowledge by multi-task learning skillfully. Our approach obtains state-of-the-art results on Chinese multi-choice MRC dataset ReCO and also effectively improves the performance on C3.

Many detailed data on past geological hazard events are buried in geological hazard reports and have not been fully utilized. The growing developments in geographic information retrieval and temporal information retrieval offer opportunities to analyse this wealth of data to mine the spatiotemporal evolution of geological disaster occurrence and enhance risk decision making. This study presents a combined NLP and ontology matching information extraction framework for automatically recognizing semantic and spatiotemporal information from geological hazard reports. This framework mainly extracts unstructured information from geological disaster reports through named entity recognition, ontology matching and gazetteer matching to identify and annotate elements, thus enabling users to quickly obtain key information and understand the general content of disaster reports. In addition, we present the final results obtained from the experiments through a reasonable visualization and analyse the visual results. The extraction and retrieval of semantic information related to the dynamics of geohazard events are performed from both natural and human perspectives to provide information on the progress of events.

Comprehensive study: How the context information of different granularity affects dialogue state tracking?

Dialogue state tracking (DST) plays a key role in task-oriented dialogue systems to monitor the user's goal. In general, there are two strategies to track a dialogue state: predicting it from scratch and updating it from previous state. The scratch-based strategy obtains each slot value by inquiring all the dialogue history, and the previous-based strategy relies on the current turn dialogue to update the previous dialogue state. However, it is hard for the scratch-based strategy to correctly track short-dependency dialogue state because of noise;meanwhile, the previous-based strategy is not very useful for long-dependency dialogue state tracking. Obviously, it plays different roles for the context information of different granularity to track different kinds of dialogue states. Thus, in this paper, we will study and discuss how the context information of different granularity affects dialogue state tracking. First, we explore how greatly different granularities affect dialogue state tracking. Then, we further discuss how to combine multiple granularities for dialogue state tracking. Finally, we apply the findings about context granularity to few-shot learning scenario. Besides, we have publicly released all codes. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In many RFID-enabled applications, objects are classified into different categories, and the information associated with each object's category (called category information) is written into the attached tag, allowing the reader to access it later. The category information sampling in such RFID systems, which is to randomly choose (sample) a few tags from each category and collect their category information, is fundamental for providing real-time monitoring and analysis in RFID. However, to the best of our knowledge, two technical challenges, i.e., how to guarantee a minimized execution time and reduce collection failure caused by missing tags, remain unsolved for this problem. In this paper, we address these two limitations by considering how to use the shortest possible time to sample a different number of random tags from each category and collect their category information sequentially in small batches. In particular, we first obtain a lower bound on the execution time of any protocol that can solve this problem. Subsequently, we present a near-OPTimal Category information sampling protocol (OPT-C) that solves the problem with an execution time close to the lower bound. Finally, extensive simulation results demonstrate the superiority of OPT-C over existing protocols, while real-world experiments further validate its practicality. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has complex topology, control architecture and broadband harmonic spectrum. For this, linear-time-periodic (LTP) theory, covering multi-harmonic coupling relations, has been adopted for MMC impedance modeling recently. However, the existing MMC impedance models usually lack explicit expressions and general modeling procedure for different control strategies. To this end, this paper proposes a general impedance modeling procedure applicable to various power converters with grid-forming and grid-following control strategies. The modeling is based on a unified representation of MMC circuit as the input and output relation between the voltage or current on the AC side and the exerted modulation index, while the control part vice versa, thereby interconnected as closed-loop feedback. With each part expressed as transfer functions, the final impedance model keeps the explicit form of harmonic transfer function matrix, making it convenient to directly observe and analyze the influence of each part individually. Thereby the submodule capacitance is found as the main cause of difference between MMC impedance compared to two-level converter, which will get closer as the capacitance increases. Effectiveness and generality of the impedance modeling method is demonstrated through comprehensive comparison with impedance scanning using electromagnetic transient simulation. Similarity-preserving hashing is an important method to solve approximate nearest neighbour search problem for image retrieval. Lots of works have been proposed for supervised hashing and image category labels are utilized as supervised information. However, current works ignore a fact that images can be described by a set of attributes. Intuitively, images of different categories with close visual features can be separated by their attribute features because attributes keep more detailed information. In this paper, we propose a novel supervised deep hashing method with image attribute guidance. Specifically, hash codes are learnt through image visual features and guided by image attributes by maintaining pair wise similarities between images as well as the corresponding attribute descriptions. Extensive experimental results on two benchmark datasets show that our proposed method achieves better performance compared with the state of the art hashing methods. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In order to make full use of the concept of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) and the collaborative design capability of the open model-based engineering environment (OpenMBEE) in establishing complex product development platform, we propose an effective method to solve the problem of unified identity authentication in OpenMBEE integration. The proposed method is based on the Model View Controller(MVC) architecture in OpenMBEE, which has the characteristics strong plasticity and can be benefit for expanding the function in the controller layer. In our research, we make full use of the Software Development Kit (SDK) of OpenMBEE to expand the existing functions in the controller layer, and increase the function of communicating with the application development platform, then realize the function of sharing user authentication information between the development platform and OpenMBEE. After expansion, the system includes three modules, including the Front-end Service Module(FSM), MQ based Information Receiving Service Module(IFRSM), and the OpenMBEE Backend Server Module(BSM). The effectiveness of the proposed strategies is verified by some practical instances, which verifies that our study can provide an effective design idea for the identity authentication in OpenMBEE integration.
