Considering the computation and transmission ability of nodes, we propose a weighted degree-based clustering algorithm in grid. To achieve low clustering complexity, we have made use of the number of hops to constrain the range of selective nodes in grid. Although such solutions have resulted in a failure to obtain the optimal distances, under the case of continuous dynamical changes of nodes, the optimal distance is unnecessary. Our algorithm has applied weighted degree of nodes and the number of hops to select initial cluster centers. During the process of clustering, we have adjusted the cluster centers according to the maximum weighted degree of nodes to guarantee the data transmission ability of the nodes in every cluster. The simulation results demonstrate that our algorithm achieves better clustering performance than the K-Means heuristic algorithm and the density-based host clustering algorithm in three aspects: execution time, the number of effective clusters and average weighted capacity. © 2007 IEEE.

To improve the agility, dynamics, composability, reusability, and development efficiency restricted by monolithic federation object model （FOM）, a modular FOM is proposed by high level architecture （HLA） evolved product development group. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of HLA evolved modular FOM. In particular, related concepts, the overall impact on HLA standards, extension principles, and merging processes are discussed. Also permitted and restricted combinations, and merging rules are provided, and the influence on HLA interface specification is given. The comparison between modular FOM and base object model （BOM） is performed to illustrate the importance of their combination. The applications of modular FOM are summarized. Finally, the significance to facilitate compoable simulation both in academia and practice is presented and future directions are pointed out.

EEG recording is a time consuming operation during which the subject is expected to stay still for a long time performing tasks. It is reasonable to expect some fluctuation in the level of focus toward the performed task during the task period. This study is focused on investigating various approaches for emphasizing regions of interest during the task period. Dividing the task period into three segments of beginning, middle and end, is expectable to improve the overall classification performance by changing the concentration of the training samples toward regions in which subject had better concentration toward the performed tasks. This issue is investigated through the use of techniques such as i) replication, ii) biasing, and iii) overlapping. A dataset with 4 motor imagery tasks (BCI Competition III dataset IIIa) is used. The results illustrate the existing variations within the potential of different segments of the task period and the feasibility of techniques that focus the training samples toward such regions. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The high dimensional nature of EEG data due to large electrode numbers and long task periods is one of the main challenges of studying EEG. Evolutionary alternatives to conventional dimension reduction methods exhibit the advantage of not requiring the entire recording sessions for operation. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is an Evolutionary method that achieves performance through evaluation of several generations of possible solutions. This study investigates the feasibility of a 2 layer PSO structure for synchronous reduction of both electrode and task period dimensions using 4 motor imagery EEG data. The results indicate the potential of the proposed PSO paradigm for dimension reduction with insignificant losses in classification and the practical uses in subject transfer applications. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Data collection is a fundamental and important issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Recent research has shown that using mobile nodes to collect and carry data in WSNs has many advantages over static multi-hop routing. In this paper, we focus on the problem of data collection in WSNs with the minimum mobile nodes. A mobile node can pick up the data cached in a sensor node via one-hop wireless communications when it passes by a point that R meters away from this stationary sensor node. Since the storage capability of sensor node is limited, each mobile node must visit the sensor nodes, that assigned to it, every t seconds to avoid the overflow of sensor data. In order to reduce the cost of mobile nodes, we try to minimize the number of mobile nodes. We formally prove that the problem of minimizing the number of mobile nodes required by periodical data collection in WSNs is NP hard. We propose a path planning algorithm to minimize the number of mobile nodes. Our simulation results show that our approach can notably reduce the number of required mobile nodes as much as 55.6%. © 2011 IEEE.

In current cities, the number of vehicles grows rapidly especially in developing countries, and the traffic surveillance system usually has tens of thousands of cameras connected into a huge network. Hence the volume of data generated by traffic cameras becomes astronomical. So it is a great challenge to process and utilize these big data resources effectively and efficiently. Towards this end, this paper proposes a system which provides a novel service of vehicle trajectory search for urban traffic surveillance. In this system, smart cameras extract vehicle IDs with time information when vehicles appear in their views and send these information to a data center with very little bandwidth cost. After that, the center server stores and organizes traffic data using two types of tables, camera tables and inverted tables. We fuse vehicle IDs, spatial-temporal data, and topology of urban roads to build a global graph and propose a PathRank algorithm to support the vehicle trajectory search. Experiment results on data from a real city traffic surveillance network validate and evaluate our system. Copyright 2014 ACM.

In this paper, we try to address the difficult problem of detecting humans robustly with low energy consumption in the visual sensor network. The proposed method contains two parts: one is an ESOBS (Enhanced Self-Organizing Background Subtraction) based foreground segmentation module to obtain active areas in the observed area from the visual sensor;the other is a HOG (Histograms of Oriented Gradients) based detection module to detect the appearance shape from the foreground areas. Moreover, we create a large pedestrian dataset according to the specific scene in visual sensor networks. Numerous experiments are conducted. The experimental results show the effectiveness of our method. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper describes attribute extraction, attribute classification and data cleaning process in tourism emergency, builds a widely applicable decision table, and uses the attribute reduction algorithm based on the importance of Pawlak property. The results proves that the decision table after reduction is more beneficial to obtain useful decision rules, on the premise of maintaining constant dependence of condition attributes and decision attributes. ©2009 IEEE.

In order to solve the sparse initial information problem when the topic model was established ever before, this paper establishes the Wikipedia based news event knowledge base. Referring to this knowledge base, we calculate the weight of the news model, make the similarity measurement based on the time distance, make the clustering based on time line, and apply the dynamic threshold strategy to detect and track the topics automatically in the news materials. The experiment result verifies the validity of this method. © 2010 IEEE.

Video surveillance system, which can provide real-time display of the monitored scene and video playback, has been employed in many areas including: commercial security, accident investigation, law enforcement and emergency response. However, audio which carries important information not availab.e in video is usually not taken seriously and used effectively. In this paper, we develop an enhanced surveillance platform by introducing the low-power wireless audio sensor networks (WASNs). We can obtain more comprehensive and precise monitoring without the limitation of the line-of-sight and lighting condition. Moreover, this platform is designed and built for providing key support to varieties of applications. This article describes the platform architecture, including design, implementation, and performance. We describe the audio sensor platform which can deliver high-quality audio over sensor network by multi-hops with low power requirement. In addition, we present the multimedia synchronization mechanism in the heterogeneous network which is the foundation of applications in the proposed platform. Our experiments include an in-depth analysis of the bottlenecks within the platform as well as measurements for the various components. © 2011 IEEE.
