Due to the personalized needs for specific aspect evaluation on product quality, these years have witnessed a boom of researches on aspect rating prediction, whose goal is to extract ad hoc aspects from online reviews and predict rating or opinion on each aspect. Most of the existing works on aspect rating prediction have a basic assumption that the overall rating is the average score of aspect ratings or the overall rating is very close to aspect ratings. However, after analyzing real datasets, we have an insightful observation: there is an obvious rating bias between overall rating and aspect ratings. Motivated by this observation, we study the problem of aspect mining with rating bias, and design a novel RAting-center model with BIas (RABI). Different from the widely used review-center models, RABI adopts the overall rating as the center of the probabilistic model, which generates reviews and topics. In addition, a novel aspect rating variable in RABI is designed to effectively integrate the rating bias priori information. Experiments on two real datasets (Dianping and TripAdvisor) validate that RABI significantly improves the prediction accuracy over existing state-of-the-art methods. © Springer International Publishing AG 2016.

There has been considerable interest in boosting and bagging, including the combination of the adaptive techniques of AdaBoost with the random selection with replacement techniques of Bagging. At the same time there has been a revisiting of the way we evaluate, with chance-corrected measures like Kappa, Informedness, Correlation or ROC AUC being advocated. This leads to the question of whether learning algorithms can do better by optimizing an appropriate chance corrected measure. Indeed, it is possible for a weak learner to optimize Accuracy to the detriment of the more reaslistic chance-corrected measures, and when this happens the booster can give up too early. This phenomenon is known to occur with conventional Accuracy-based AdaBoost, and the MultiBoost algorithm has been developed to overcome such problems using restart techniques based on bagging. This paper thus complements the theoretical work showing the necessity of using chance-corrected measures for evaluation, with empirical work showing how use of a chance-corrected measure can improve boosting. We show that the early surrender problem occurs in MultiBoost too, in multiclass situations, so that chance-corrected AdaBook and Multibook can beat standard Multiboost or AdaBoost, and we further identify which chance-corrected measures to use when.

The study investigates the effectiveness of 2 variations of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) called Area Extended PSO (AEPSO) and Cooperative AEPSO (CAEPSO) in simulated robotic environments affected by a combinatorial noise. Knowledge Transfer, the use of the expertise and knowledge gained from previous experiments, can improve the robots decision making and reduce the number of wrong decisions in such uncertain environments. This study investigates the impact of transfer learning on robots' performance in such hostile environment. The results highlight the feasibility of CAEPSO to be used as the controller and decision maker of a swarm of robots in the simulated uncertain environment when gained expertise from past training is transferred to the robots in the testing phase.

There are two kinds of correlations in multi-view human actions. One is the temporal correlation between adjacent frames, the other is the spatial correlation between different cameras. In this paper, we introduce a discriminative model, two-dimensional Conditional Random Field (2D CRF) which can model the spatial-temporal correlations in actions, and present algorithms for multi-view single person action and two persons interaction recognition based on this model. For the action representation part, we model each action as a bag of visual words based on the spatial-temporal features;for the action recognition part, we use 2D CRF for multi-view single person action and two persons interaction recognition. We use IXMAS and our Multi-view Human Interaction (MHI) datasets for the experiments. The results show the superior performance of the proposed approach over most of the state-of-the-art methods. ICA3D is an implemented computer aided system that helps user design ancient Chinese architecture. With ICA3D, the user can describe the building he/she wants to see in a domain specific Chinese natural language, and the system automatically generates an animation demonstrating the construction process of this building from scratch. This whole text-to-scene conversion is supported by a set of knowledge bases implemented by the Semantic Web technologies. Currently, ICA3D covers more than 180 different types of Chinese traditional buildings. Compared with normal CAD systems, ICA3D features the automatic generation of animation, natural language style user interface, and scalab.e knowledge infrastructure.

Both empirical and mathematical demonstrations of the importance of chance-corrected measures are discussed, and a new model of learning is proposed based on empirical psychological results on association learning. Two forms of this model are developed, the Informatron as a chance-corrected Perceptron, and AdaBook as a chance-corrected AdaBoost procedure. Computational results presented show chance correction facilitates learning. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Abandoned object detection in highway scene is one of the most crucial tasks in intelligent visual surveillance systems. However, few previous methods on abandoned object detection have focused on this important problem. In this paper, we present a new framework to detect the abandoned objects. In our framework, Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to model the background, but it is not updated every frame for keeping the abandoned objects in the foreground. To erase the noise caused by sunshine or wind, we bring an edge statistics feature based approach into the framework. Moreover, object tracking module is also integrated into the framework for a better abandoned object detection. Extensive experiments are conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed framework is not only real-time enough for practical application, but also have a very high detection accuracy. © 2011 IEEE.

As an important aspect in video content analysis, event detection is still an open problem. In particular, the study on detecting interactive events in crowd scenes is still limited. In this paper, we investigate detecting interactive events between persons, e.g. PeopleMeet, PeopleSplitUp and Embrace in complex scenes using a sequence learning based approach. By sequence learning, the spatial-temporal context information is introduced in the learning stage. Experiments have been performed over TRECVid Event Detection 2010 dataset, which contains totally 144 hours surveillance video of London Gatwick airport. According to the TRECVid-ED 2010 formal evaluation, our approach obtains promising results, with the top performance (NDCR) for PeopleMeet and PeopleSplit-Up, and second-best performance (NDCR) for Embrace. Feature-preserving simplification of meshes based on new quadric metrics

Various methods have been proposed to simplify complex triangle meshes in many applications of computer graphics. Methods based on quadric error metric allow fast and accurate geometric simplification of meshes. But they often lose some importation shape features, such as the corners, at low resolution. This paper presents an improved quadric error metric for preserving geometric features of the original model even after performing drastic level of simplification. We define an important degree for each triangle and embed it in quadric error metric. The important degrees of triangles reflect the local surface variation. Therefore, the new error metric can retain the characteristic features. The result shows that most important features of original model are evident in low-level model and the distribution of meshes is more subject to local surface variation.

In component-based software development, it is important to use formal models to describe component composition. However, the existing component composition models generally ignore real-time issues. We present a formal integration model based on Hierarchical Timed Automata (HTA) for real-time software system. We present formal definition of components and different component composition techniques. We then introduce the notions of composable and compatible composition, and use Multiset lab.led Transition Systems to represent the interface actions of HTA to perform compositional verification. This hierarchical and unified framework establishes the foundation for formal analysis of real-time properties of the system. © 2007 IEEE.
