While the real-time processing applications are ubiquitous, which lead to the sprout of many distributed real-time stream processing systems. In this paper, we design a high-performance streamed-oriented big data processing system, including a messaging queue on Kafka and a Spark Streaming-based processing engine, and we evaluate the effectiveness of our system through a real-time traffic statistics application. Then we focus on the relationship between the parameters of Kafka and Spark Streaming and the performance of our system. In the last, we discuss the scalability of the optimized system of Kafka and Spark Streaming.

Hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP) video streaming is a growing and increasingly important data traffic type in wireless and mobile networks. Experiments have shown that the quality of experience (QoE) of this service strongly depends on the number of playback interruptions. This paper proposes a QoE-oriented packet scheduling algorithm to reduce the pauses during video playback in a wireless environment. Both channel quality and the amount of video data stored in the player buffer are considered in the process of resource allocation. The proposed scheme is simulated and examined in an LTE mobile network. Simulation results show a significant improvement of the QoE, and the number of pauses during video playback decreases by 50% in the proposed scheme compared with that in the other solutions. Mobile internet traffic is increasing explosively, while many type of applications are delay-elastic in nature. We investigate the asynchronous delivery oriented algorithms to decrease peak-to-average ratio (PAR), i.e., the ratio of optical resource usage in the peak period to the average per-period usage of the fronthaul, while improve the optical resource allocation efficiency. In this paper, we formulate an integer non-linear programming (INLP) optimization model and propose an adaptive generic algorithm (GA) to realize the optimization in a limited time. The simulation results show that the maximum PAR decreases by 32% with asynchronous delivery oriented optical resource optimization. Besides, optical resource saving can be achieved with minimal influence on topology, and the load difference can be further reduced.

This paper investigates proportional-fair energy-efficient radio resource allocation problem for the uplink transmission of OFDMA smallcell networks. Instead of the fairness measured by users' achievable data rates, this paper concentrates on the fairness in terms of energy efficiency (EE) and aims to provide EE-based proportional fairness guarantee among all users in smallcell networks. Specifically, EE-based global proportional fairness utility optimization problem is formulated, taking into account both the minimum data rates requirements and the cross-tier interference constraints. In order to make the problem more tractable, it is transformed into a weighted sum maximization problem of each user's instantaneous EE utility. Then, a two-step scheme is adopted, which solves subchannel allocation and power allocation separately, and the corresponding algorithms are devised. The proposed subchannel allocation algorithm is heuristic and low-complexity. The power allocation scheme is optimal, and is devised based on a novel method which can solve the sum of ratios problems efficiently. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms, especially the good capability of ensuring high level EE fairness among all users in the smallcell network.

For safety applications of Vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET), many valuable broadcast protocols have been proposed nowadays, most of which are based either on sender or receiver. In fact, sender-based protocols would fall into invalidation owing to high mobility of vehicles, while receiver-based ones would generate extra delay. Combining both, this paper proposes a broadcast protocol with the minimum delay forwarding (BP-MDF) optimization for disseminating safety messages in city scenario. Based on the presented delay model, considering both of the static and dynamic routing attributes of urban road, BP-MDF firstly specifies the only one neighbor node as forwarder at sending end, and other receivers assist in forwarding if specified forwarder rebroadcasts unsuccessfully. Consequently, both reliability and timeliness performance of broadcast are satisfied. The simulation results show that the delay and dissemination efficiency of BP-MDF outperforms Slotted-1 protocol, accompanying with the achievement of more than 95% packet delivery ratio.

In this paper, we provide a cost optimized algorithm to design a real-time data transmission network architecture and realize real-time monitoring of transmission line in smart grid. How to deliver this real-time data to the control center efficiently is a critical challenge to build an intelligent smart grid. We formulate a three-layer network structure that can provide cost effective data transmission by the meantime, the bandwidth, delay, and connectivity constraints can be well met. Furthermore, the optimal placement of the LTE transceivers is studied aiming at maximizing the bandwidth and minimizing the delay in information delivery. The results we present in the paper individually analyze the effect of variation in each of the constraint on the cost of the network while other constraints are assumed to take up average values. Our analysis shows that three-layer wireless network used in smart grids can solve the problem of real-time data transmission and reduce the overall cost of transmission line monitoring network by the algorithm proposed in this paper.

A key technology in the 5th generation (5G) wireless communications is non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) which can effectively support massive random access. Since in a 5G system the number of active users generally does not exceed 10% of the total number of users in practice, the main challenge for multi-user detection (MUD) is the joint detection of sparse active users and their data. To address this challenge, we propose a novel compressed sensing based NOMA (CS-NOMA) scheme which can be deployed in a CDMA or an OFDM system and does not have control signaling overhead and need no knowledge of the active state of users. In the proposed scheme, K users are multiplexed over N shared resources (K >> N). Then, a CS-based MUD is applied to the proposed CS-NOMA scheme. Simulation results show that, in the case that active users are sparse (e.g., 10%), the proposed scheme can achieve a superior performance even when the system loading is up to 300%.

Spectrum sensing is a key technique for providing an opportunistic spectrum band in cognitive radio networks. The opportunistic spectrum is determined by the channel state. Mobility makes the problem of the traditional sensing mechanism more severe than in static scenarios. In this paper the channel transition monitoring based spectrum sensing mechanism is proposed. The proposed scheme not only reduces the influence of mobility on the current sensing mechanism, but also ensures reliability of the sensing and improves the spectrum efficiency. Our simulation results show that the proposed mechanism outperforms the traditional mechanism. Our method supplements the traditional sensing mechanism and enhances the efficiency of cognitive radio networks. © Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2015.

WiFi offloading is a cost-effective and practical solution to alleviate the problem of highly congested cellular networks. Recent theoretical and experimental studies show that delayed WiFi offloading where traffic can be delayed to increase the chance of meeting WiFi can significantly improve offloading efficiency. Nevertheless, there is no exact analytic model to analyze the offloading benefits with different types of traffic. In this paper, we propose a preemptive priority queuing analytic model for delayed offloading with multi-level priority traffic and derive expressions for the average delay and offloading efficiency of traffic with different priorities as a function of the WiFi availability, deadlines, and other key parameters. At last, we validate the accuracy of our queuing model by simulation in different scenarios and clarify how to choose a suitable deadline for traffic of different priorities.

An estimator for the Ricean K factor is designed by approximating the maximum a posterior (MAP) probability. The performance of the approximate MAP estimator is examined. Numerical results show that the approximate MAP estimator outperforms the approximate maximum likelihood estimator. It also outperforms the best moment-based estimator at small sample sizes. © 2015 IEEE.
