The long term evolution (LTE) networks provide high data rate access to support multi-media services at the expense of more power consumption in user equipment (UE). Discontinuous reception (DRX) mechanism is one of the promising technologies for energy saving in LTE networks, which extends UE battery lifetime effectively. The DRX parameters configuration should make a compromise between power saving and wake-up delay, which can be achieved by the DRX parameters configuration according to different traffic types with specific quality of service (QoS) requirement. In this paper, we model the DRX mechanism with web traffic using a semi-Markov process. Based on the proposed model, the performance of power saving and wake-up delay with various DRX parameters is analysed, which provides insight on effects of the DRX parameters on the power saving and wake-up delay performance. The analytical results are verified by the simulation, which shows that LTE DRX achieves much power saving gains at the cost of tolerable delay.

The energy efficiency (EE) optimization in downlink carrier aggregated networks is addressed in this paper. To maximize EE by joint component carrier (CC) configuration and power control, we first model the problem as a mixed integer non-linear programming problem, which is NP-hard. Then the existence of optimal solution is proved. Based on the properties of optimal solution obtained by analysis, an optimal algorithm is found. Finally, a low-complex suboptimal algorithm is proposed by exploiting inherent features of CC configuration and dividing power control into two subproblems, which can be solved optimally. Simulation results show that EE of proposed algorithms is significantly better than that of conventional algorithm, and the suboptimal algorithm can greatly reduce complexity with little loss of EE in comparison to the optimal algorithm.

Nowadays, inspired by the behavior and neuronal architecture of human visual system (HVS), region of interest (ROI) detection methods are investigated by integrating several cognitive features. However, most of them are complex and time-consuming. To solve this problem, a video ROI extraction algorithm based on information theory and cognitive features is proposed in this paper. Based on the information theory, the spatial and temporal information are computed to measure the spatial and temporal content of video sequences respectively. Utilizing the visual features fusion strategy (VFFS), visual information is obtained from the combination of spatial and temporal information. Then, perceptual stimulus-response model (PSRM) is established to map the visual information to match the visual saliency. Regions with saliency scores, which are higher than a self-adaptive threshold, are regarded as ROIs. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme reduces 50% computation complexity, and can extract ROI more effective compared to Itti's method. Furthermore, the proposed ROI extraction scheme can be easily applied in the practical multimedia processing and pattern recognition system, such as video summarization.

To relieve the negative effect brought by the intricate wireless network environment and unstable user behavior in layered mobile peer-to peer（P2P） streaming service, an evolved layered P2P （E-LP2P） data scheduling scheme in the process of service delivery is introduced in this paper. The data in base layer is scheduled according to its importance in streaming play to guarantee the basic play of streaming. The data in enhancement layer is scheduled according to the characters of streaming data, including its position and amount in server peer set in a multiple tied way towards the data in enhancement layer. To cope with the layer jitter caused by the fluctuation of bandwidth, jitter prevent mechanism is used to adjust the highest layer dynamically during the process of data scheduling. Simulation results show that the E-LP2P can provide good quality of service（QoS） performance in terms of throughput, layer delivery ratio, server load and useless packet ratio.

Understanding spatial and temporal dynamics of mobile internet services in cellular data network can be of great help to network management and service provisioning. To this end, we conduct the detailed measurement analysis of spatial and temporal dynamics from point of view of traffic generated by subscribers. The analyzation is based on a large-scale data set collected from a commercial ISP covering an entire city in Southern China. We analyze individual subscriber behaviors and observe a significant variation in network usage among subscribers. We characterize mobile internet services spatial and temporal dynamics and identity their relation to traffic volume. The data set tracks more than 3 million mobile subscribers. To handle the problem of big data processing, the data are parallel processed using MapReduce programming model, a novel framework for distributed computing with proved high efficiency and low cost features. Generally, our observations deliver important insights into mobile internet service and mobile subscriber behavior.

With the sharp increasing demand of the indoor coverage and network capacity, dense femtocells are the ultimate target of the femto cellular network deployment in urban environment. However, dense femtocell deployment could introduce excessive inter-femtocell interference (IFI). To address this problem, this paper proposes a distributed power self-optimization scheme for the downlink of dense femtocell networks. First, a noncooperative power self-optimization game framework is established based on the exact potential game, which is demonstrated to converge to a pure and unique Nash Equilibrium. Then, a novel convex pricing mechanism is presented to price the transmit power of femtocells. Finally, combined with Firefly Intelligence Optimization (FIO), an effective power self-optimization algorithm with guaranteed convergence is proposed to achieve the Nash Equilibrium. With practical LTE parameters and 3GPP dualstrip femtocell model, simulation results show that the proposed scheme dramatically reduce femtocells transmit power while improving the throughput of dense femtocell networks compared to the scheme with non-linear pricing.

Femtocells have attracted growing attentions in academia, industry, and standardization forums in recent years. However, most of existing works on femtocell networks are focused on spectrum efficiency and interference mitigation, energy efficiency aspect is neglected. In this paper, we investigate the maximization of energy efficiency of downlink OFDMA dense femtocell networks by efficient resource allocation. To decrease the complexity, joint subchannel allocation and power control are decomposed into two steps. Power control has been modeled as a non-cooperative game, a closed-form best response of transmit power is obtained. Considering fairness and low complexity, a fair time-averaged subchannel allocation metric have been derived out. Based on that, we propose a distributed suboptimal subchannel allocation and optimal power control algorithm. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has a low complexity with slight loss of energy efficiency compared with Round-Robin Scheduling and a noncooperative energy-efficient power optimization algorithm.

Echo state network (ESN), which efficiently models nonlinear dynamic systems, has been proposed as a special form of recurrent neural network. However, most of the proposed ESNs consist of complex reservoir structures, leading to excessive computational cost. Recently, minimum complexity ESNs were proposed and proved to exhibit high performance and low computational cost. In this paper, we propose a simple deterministic ESN with a loop reservoir, i.e., an ESN with an adjacent-feedback loop reservoir. The novel reservoir is constructed by introducing regular adjacent feedback based on the simplest loop reservoir. Only a single free parameter is tuned, which considerably simplifies the ESN construction. The combination of a simplified reservoir and fewer free parameters provides superior prediction performance. In the benchmark datasets and real-world tasks, our scheme obtains higher prediction accuracy with relatively low complexity, compared to the classic ESN and the minimum complexity ESN. Furthermore, we prove that all the linear ESNs with the simplest loop reservoir possess the same memory capacity, arbitrarily converging to the optimal value.

This paper illustrates a semi-active handover algorithm on the integrated utilization of RSS and location, according to characteristics of a cellular network and WiFi. While connecting to a cellular network, MS (Mobile Station) is in the passive mode, where BS (Base Station) informs the MS to hand over on the basis of location information. In contrast, MS in the WiFi link chooses the optimal AP (Access Point) or switches to the cellular network in light of the detection algorithm proposed by this paper. The final emulation could prove the semi-active mechanism to effectively prevent the occurrence of a ping-pong effect, and improve performance to the right network. © 2012 IEEE.
