Images and language convey meaning that depend on the viewpoints and contextual background of those perceiving them. Taxonomies help order meaning such that information granules, image elements and words, make sense in relation to one another and to their mutual global context. In linguistics, hypernyms cover semantically broader context then their subordinate hyponym. In images, superordinate spatial-taxons (object groups or foreground) cover more abstract regions then their child subordinate spatial-taxons (objects or salient object parts). In this paper I use fuzzy granularization and fuzzy perceptualization as proposed by Zadeh 2002 to explore image annotation by using Zadeh's Restriction-centered Theory of Truth and Meaning as proposed in 2013. The approach uses human annotated image data, search engine queries and data collected from WordNet (A Lexical Database for English maintained by Princeton University). I discuss implications for Shannon, Integrated, and Zadeh Information Theory.

In his epoch-making work on information theory, Shannon defended information in terms of entropy. Entropy-based definitions of information relate to quantity of information, but not to its meaning. Subsequent attempts to introduce semantics into information theory have made some progress but fell short of having a capability to deal with information described in natural language. This paper is aimed that of laying information for the theory which has this capability, call it a theory of semantics information (TSI). TSI is centered on a concept which plays a key role in human intelligence - A concept whose basic importance has long been and continues to be unrecognized - The concept of a restriction is pervasive in human cognition. Restrictions underlie the remarkable human ability to reason and make rational decisions in an environment of imprecision, uncertainty and incompleteness of information. Such environments are the norm in the real-world. Such environments have the traditional logical systems that become dysfunctional. There are many applications in which semantics of information plays an important role. Among such applications are: machine translation, summarization, search and decision-making under uncertainty. Informally, a restriction on a specified (focal) variable, X, written as R (X), is a statement which is a carrier of information about the values which X can take. Typically, restrictions are described in natural language. Example. X = length of time it takes to drive from berkeley to SF Airport; R(X) = usually it takes about 90 minutes to drive from berkeley to SF Airport. In adverse weather it may take close to 2 hours. An important issue in TSI is computation with restrictions. TSI opens the door to modes of computation in which approximation is accepted. Acceptance of approximate computations takes the calculus of restrictions (CR) into uncharted territory.

With the recent stunning success of machine learning, artificially intelligent machine vision research falls (roughly) into two camps: the big data camp and cognitive informatics camp. Big data uses statistical methods to discover latent structures that emerge from the co-occurrences of relevant features when sampling over enormous quantities of data. The cognitive informatics methods design computer vision systems to mimic human cognition. Though some visual latent features that emerge from deep learning networks, mimic mammalian visual detectors, as of yet the information processing mechanisms (analogous to human psychophysical mechanisms) remain hidden within the complexity of the deep nets. Furthermore, the sampling requirements of big data systems require limiting samples to pre-processed sets, such as SHIFT (shift invariant feature transform (Lowe 1999)). Techniques, such as the ones introduced in this paper, provide fast cognitively relevant methods for selecting samples and reducing the number of candidate features. The approach described in this paper live squarely in the camp of designing computer vision A.I. to mimics human cognitive processes. I introduce a novel definition of edges, based on human hierarchical scene perception. Hierarchical scene perception views vision within the 5 dimensions of horizontal & vertical position, depth, time and scene abstraction level (spatial-taxon). Fuzzy inference selects candidate edge elements using the Gestalt psychology principal of good curvilinear continuation, proximity and edges attachment. Spatial-taxon inference infers an edge outline for each level of abstraction within the scene architecture. The system was tested on 60 natural images and the results provide edges more aligned with human intuition of what edges should look like. ROC plots indicate solid performance, with the majority of human subjects rating the edge detection as high quality. The inferred edges are consistent with the finding of neurons r

Technological progress—especially in the realms of information processing, communication, transportation, commerce and distribution of energy—is leading to an accelerated growth in interdependence on all levels of modern society. A well-known result in systems analysis is that highly interdependent large-scale systems carry a high risk of catastrophic failures. To ensure stability, an increase in interdependence must be accompanied by an increase in coordination/regulation. In democratic societies there is an imbalance between interdependence and coordination/regulation. A manifestation of this imbalance is a chronic crisis of undercoordination. In large measure, the debt crisis of 2008 may be viewed as an eruption of the crisis of undercoordination.

Communicating information on the environmental status of water, air and other parameters to the policy makers and the public at large is by indices. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) formulated a uniform Air Quality Index (AQI), for the use of state and local agencies but there has been no general acceptance of the method. Many countries have devised their own methods for describing air quality. The sequel is an attempt to compare the following two methods for air quality classification using the available air quality parametric data in Chennai city of India. These methods include: 1. US-EPA's Conventional AQI (CAQI) and Fuzzy logic based method proposed by Zadeh-Deshpande(ZD) using the concept of degree of match, without computing AQI and straightway describing air quality in various linguistic terms with some degree of certainty attached to each term. The case study relates to application of these methods to air quality data of Chennai City, India. The study reveals that the air quality description using the ZD formalism is comparable with the CAQI. The conventional method fails to capture the uncertainty which is resident in the pollutant data. Furthermore, the advantage of the second method is that, it attaches a linguistic degree of certainty to each linguistic class. In spite of variability in the perception of the experts' there are no visible changes in the final results using Zadeh-Deshpande formalism.

In medical diagnosis, the descriptions of disease entities use linguistic expressions that are inherently imprecise/vague/ fuzzy/ambiguous which form the scaffold of the medical knowledge of a physician. In our view, overall approach in gynecological disease diagnosis could be divided in three distinct stages. Stage 1 refers to initial screening process in order to arrive at a single disease diagnosis for the patients, and based only on the subjective information provided by patients to the physician. In stage 2, the patient who has not received a single diagnostic label in stage 1, is further investigated for single disease diagnosis using the parameter past history. If stage 2 fails to arrive at a single disease diagnosis for a patient then physical examination and various tests like imaging tests, blood tests, etc. are conducted and the test results are processed in stage 3. The paper presents the research findings with a case study focused only on stage 2 using type 1 fuzzy inference system. We have identified 29 out of 226 patients satisfying past history criteria to achieve single disease diagnosis wherein in stage 1, 50 patients were correctly diagnosed.

What is truth? The question does not admit a simple, precise answer. A dictionary-style definition is: The truth value of a proposition, p, is the degree to which the meaning of p is in agreement with factual information, F. A precise definition of truth will be formulated at a later point in this paper. The theory outlined in the following, call it RCT for short, is a departure from traditional theories of truth and meaning. In RCT, truth values are allowed to be described in natural language. Examples. Quite true, more or less true, almost true, largely true, possibly true, probably true, usually true, etc. Such truth values are referred to as linguistic truth values. Linguistic truth values are not allowed in traditional logical systems, but are routinely used by humans in everyday reasoning and everyday discourse. The centerpiece of RCT is a deceptively simple concept - the concept of a restriction. Informally, a restriction, R(X), on a variable, X, is an answer to a question of the form: What is the value of the variable, X? Possible answers: X=10, X is between 3 and 20, X is much larger than 2, X is large, probably X is large, usually X is large, etc. In RCT, restrictions are preponderantly described in natural language. An example of a fairly complex description is: It is very unlikely that there will be a significant increase in the price of oil in the near future. The canonical form of a restriction, R(X), is X isr R, where X is the restricted variable, R is the restricting relation, and r is an indexical variable which defines the way in which R restricts X. X may be an n-ary variable and R may be an n-ary relation. The canonical form may be interpreted as a generalized assignment statement in which what is assigned to X is not a value of X, but a restriction on the values which X can take. A restriction, R(X), is a carrier of information about X. A restriction is precisiated if X, R and r are mathematically well defined. A key idea which underlies RCT is

This paper demonstrates the implementation of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) in type 1 fuzzy inference system (FIS) for intravenous anesthesia control. A novel fixed to floating point conversion algorithm is proposed, and used in the implementation of floating point division in type 1 FIS. In our fuzzy rule based system, there are three input parameters described in various linguistic terms as the antecedent, which after aggegation, results into depth of anesthesia as the consequence in a fuzzy controller for closed loop control of intravenous anesthesia occupies 2586 slices of Xilinxs Spartan 3E FPGA.

The theory which is outlined in this lecture, call it RRC for short, is a departure from traditional approaches to reasoning and computation. A principal advance is an enhanced capability for reasoning and computation in an environment of uncertainty and imprecision. The point of departure in RRC is a basic premise-in the real world such environment is the norm rather than exception.
