Automatic and accurate lung nodule detection from 3D Computed Tomography (CT) scans plays a vital role in efficient lung cancer screening. Despite the state-of-the-art performance obtained by recent anchor-based detectors using Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for this task, they require predetermined anchor parameters such as the size, number, and aspect ratio of anchors, and have limited robustness when dealing with lung nodules with a massive variety of sizes. To overcome these problems, we propose a 3D sphere representation-based center-points matching detection network (SCPM-Net) that is anchor-free and automatically predicts the position, radius, and offset of nodules without manual design of nodule/anchor parameters. The SCPM-Net consists of two novel components: sphere representation and center points matching. First, to match the nodule annotation in clinical practice, we replace the commonly used bounding box with our proposed bounding sphere to represent nodules with the centroid, radius, and local offset in 3D space. A compatible sphere-based intersection over-union loss function is introduced to train the lung nodule detection network stably and efficiently. Second, we empower the network anchor-free by designing a positive center-points selection and matching (CPM) process, which naturally discards pre-determined anchor boxes. An online hard example mining and re-focal loss subsequently enable the CPM process to be more robust, resulting in more accurate point assignment and mitigation of class imbalance. In addition, to better capture spatial information and 3D context for the detection, we propose to fuse multi-level spatial coordinate maps with the feature extractor and combine them with 3D squeeze-and-excitation attention modules. To reduce uploading bandwidth and address privacy concerns, deep learning at the network edge has been an emerging topic. Typically, edge devices collaboratively train a shared model using real-time generated data through the Parameter Server framework. Although all the edge devices can share the computing workloads, the distributed training processes over edge networks are still time-consuming due to the parameters and gradients transmission procedures between parameter servers and edge devices. Focusing on accelerating distributed Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) training at the network edge, we present DynaComm, a novel scheduler that dynamically decomposes each transmission procedure into several segments to achieve optimal layer-wise communications and computations overlapping during run-time. Through experiments, we verify that DynaComm manages to achieve optimal layer-wise scheduling for all cases compared to competing strategies while the model accuracy remains untouched. Federated multi-view learning for private medical data integration and analysis

Along with the rapid expansion of information technology and digitalization of health data, there is an increasing concern on maintaining data privacy while garnering the benefits in medical field. Two critical challenges are identified: Firstly, medical data is naturally distributed across multiple local sites, making it difficult to collectively train machine learning models without data leakage. Secondly, in medical applications, data are often collected from different sources and views, resulting in heterogeneity and complexity that requires reconciliation. This paper aims to provide a generic Federated Multi-View Learning (FedMV) framework for multi-view data leakage prevention, which is based on different types of local data availability and enables to accommodate two types of problems: Vertical Federated Multi-View Learning (V-FedMV) and Horizontal Federated Multi-View Learning (H-FedMV). We experimented with real-world keyboard data collected from BiAffect study. The results demonstrated that the proposed FedMV approach can make full use of multi-view data in a privacy-preserving way, and both V-FedMV and H-FedMV methods perform better than their single-view and pairwise counterparts. Besides, the proposed model can be easily adapted to deal with multi-view sequential data in a federated environment, which has been modeled and experimentally studied. To the best of our knowledge, this framework is the first to consider both vertical and horizontal diversification in the multi-view setting as well as their sequential federated learning. The Industrial Internet of Things or Industry 4.0 efficiently enhances the manufacturing process in terms of raising productivity, system performance, cost reduction, and building large-scale systems. It enables the connection of numerous heterogeneous devices and sensors into the internet network through the utilization of revolutionary techniques that transfer the manufacturing paradigm to intelligent processes. The traditional industrial internet of things adopts centralized architectures and complex encryption algorithms that suffer from several cyber-security threats and lead to data leakage, privacy disclosure, and high computational and communicational costs. In our work, we proposed a decentralized, efficient, low-power, scalable, secure, privacy-preserving, and trusting architecture based on a private blockchain network/smart contract and interplanetary file system technology for the Al-NajafyIraq oil refinery factory. That enables autonomous working and provides a high level of security authentication and privacy preservation, P2P communication, remote access, immutability and information backtracking. Traditional blockchain technology has storage limitation issues, most recent works adopted external servers or the cloud for storage purposes. Our proposed scheme addresses the limitations of blockchain data storage by adopting an interplanetary file system (IPFS) network; provides an efficient data encryption mechanism at the perceptual layer by adopting a lightweight encryption algorithm, high-performance, and ultra-low-power consumption ARM Cortex-M microcontroller. In addition, our architecture succeeds in merging blockchain technology, IoTs, and an IPFS with the oil refinery as an industrial application area. Moreover, it provides an efficient framework that resists common cyber-security attacks and realizes cyber-security requirements represented by data availability, integrity, and confidentiality.

Stroke, also known as cerebrovascular events, is mainly caused by the obstruction of blood flow in the brain, which leads to an inability to supply oxygen to the brain. By 2013, stroke had become the second most common cause of death in Taiwan (accounting for about 12% of all deaths). This study used image processing technology and speech recognition, following the Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale, to determine whether or not the user had a stroke. The Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale has three indicators, including facial droop, arm drift, and speech. Patients with 1 of these 3 findings have a 72% probability of having had an ischemic stroke. If all satisfies, the probability of the stroke is more than 85%. In addition, we developed a mobile APP based on this method to detect whether or not the user had a stroke, and hope to reduce stroke hazards. © 2019 ACM.

CDDSA: Contrastive Domain Disentanglement and Style Augmentation for Generalizable Medical Image Segmentation

Generalization to previously unseen images with potential domain shifts and different styles is essential for clinically applicable medical image segmentation, and the ability to disentangle domain-specific and domain-invariant features is key for achieving Domain Generalization (DG). However, existing DG methods can hardly achieve effective disentanglement to get high generalizability. To deal with this problem, we propose an efficient Contrastive Domain Disentanglement and Style Augmentation (CDDSA) framework for generalizable medical image segmentation. First, a disentangle network is proposed to decompose an image into a domain-invariant anatomical representation and a domain-specific style code, where the former is sent to a segmentation model that is not affected by the domain shift, and the disentangle network is regularized by a decoder that combines the anatomical and style codes to reconstruct the input image. Second, to achieve better disentanglement, a contrastive loss is proposed to encourage the style codes from the same domain and different domains to be compact and divergent, respectively. Thirdly, to further improve generalizability, we propose a style augmentation method based on the disentanglement representation to synthesize images in various unseen styles with shared anatomical structures. Our method was validated on a public multi-site fundus image dataset for optic cup and disc segmentation and an in-house multi-site Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Magnetic Resonance Image (NPC-MRI) dataset for nasopharynx Gross Tumor Volume (GTVnx) segmentation. Experimental results showed that the proposed CDDSA achieved remarkable generalizability across different domains, and it outperformed several state-of-the-art methods in domain-generalizable segmentation. The binary neural network, largely saving the storage and computation, serves as a promising technique for deploying deep models on resource-limited devices. However, the binarization inevitably causes severe information loss, and even worse, its discontinuity brings difficulty to the optimization of the deep network. To address these issues, a variety of algorithms have been proposed, and achieved satisfying progress in recent years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of these algorithms, mainly categorized into the native solutions directly conducting binarization, and the optimized ones using techniques like minimizing the quantization error, improving the network loss function, and reducing the gradient error. We also investigate other practical aspects of binary neural networks such as the hardware-friendly design and the training tricks. Then, we give the evaluation and discussions on different tasks, including image classification, object detection and semantic segmentation. Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is an efficient approach to simplify and accelerate the deployment of diverse network services. In this paper, we study the problem of link capacity and server purchase to provision the network which enables joint Virtual Network Function (VNF) placement on servers and traffic engineering in a network spanning multiple subnetworks. Each subnetwork is owned and controlled by a different administrator. Given flow demands, we formulate the problem from a sparse optimization perspective and propose an efficient approach based on iteratively solving a sequence of group LASSO problems. Using purchased link capacities and servers, each subnetwork is able to carry out VNF placement and traffic engineering locally to meet flow demands. A scalable and decentralized approach based on the proximal Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is proposed for this problem. The distributed optimization can be locally solved with minimum information shared with other administrators. Extensive numerical evaluations show the efficiency of our approach against existing work.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a widely used radiological modality renowned for its radiation-free, comprehensive insights into the human body, facilitating medical diagnoses. However, the drawback of prolonged scan times hinders its accessibility. The k-space undersampling offers a solution, yet the resultant artifacts necessitate meticulous removal during image reconstruction. Although Deep Learning (DL) has proven effective for fast MRI image reconstruction, its broader applicability across various imaging scenarios has been constrained. Challenges include the high cost and privacy restrictions associated with acquiring large-scale, diverse training data, coupled with the inherent difficulty of addressing mismatches between training and target data in existing DL methodologies. Here, we present a novel Physics-Informed Synthetic data learning framework for Fast MRI, called PISF. PISF marks a breakthrough by enabling generalized DL for multi-scenario MRI reconstruction through a single trained model. Our approach separates the reconstruction of a 2D image into many 1D basic problems, commencing with 1D data synthesis to facilitate generalization. We demonstrate that training DL models on synthetic data, coupled with enhanced learning techniques, yields in vivo MRI reconstructions comparable to or surpassing those of models trained on matched realistic datasets, reducing the reliance on real-world MRI data by up to 96%. Additionally, PISF exhibits remarkable generalizability across multiple vendors and imaging centers. Its adaptability to diverse patient populations has been validated through evaluations by ten experienced medical professionals. PISF presents a feasible and cost-effective way to significantly boost the widespread adoption of DL in various fast MRI applications. Importantly, it alleviates the ethical and practical challenges associated with in vivo human data acquisitions, opening new horizons for advancing fast MRI technologies. Copyright © 20
