Weather information along roads is needed to reduce the traffic accidents caused by adverse weather and road conditions. Although automatic weather systems (AWS) provide wide-range coverage of weather conditions, collection devices cannot be installed on every road because of the high cost. Thus, we propose a method that extracts weather information using CCTV video data. This method is composed of three processing steps: generating conditional weather patterns using CCTV video data, calculating the similarity, and generating the weather information.

An increasing amount of research has recently focused on representing affective states as continuous numerical values on multiple dimensions, such as the valence-arousal (VA) space. Compared to the categorical approach that represents affective states as several classes (e.g., positive and negative), the dimensional approach can provide more fine-grained sentiment analysis. However, affective resources with valence-arousal ratings are still very rare, especially for the Chinese language. Therefore, this study builds 1) an affective lexicon called Chinese valence-arousal words (CVAW) containing 1,653 words, and 2) an affective corpus called Chinese valence-arousal text (CVAT) containing 2,009 sentences extracted from web texts. To improve the annotation quality, a corpus cleanup procedure is used to remove outlier ratings and improper texts. Experiments using CVAW words to predict the VA ratings of the CVAT corpus show results comparable to those obtained using English affective resources. ©2016 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, a novel scheme for quantum homomorphic signature based on coherent states is proposed, which is an effective approach to identity authentication for multiple streams to enhance the security of quantum networks. The state used for signature are arbitrarily close in trace distance to states of O(log2n), if the length of the nodes' messages is n-bit. The scheme analysis shows that the scheme is a quantum group homomorphic signature scheme and the signature is unforgeable. © 2016 IEEE.

Combinations of intense non-pharmaceutical interventions (lockdowns) were introduced in countries worldwide to reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission. Many governments have begun to implement lockdown exit strategies that allow restrictions to be relaxed while attempting to control the risk of a surge in cases. Mathematical modelling has played a central role in guiding interventions, but the challenge of designing optimal exit strategies in the face of ongoing transmission is unprecedented. Here, we report discussions from the Isaac Newton Institute "Models for an exit strategy" workshop (11-15 May 2020). A diverse community of modellers who are providing evidence to governments worldwide were asked to identify the main questions that, if answered, will allow for more accurate predictions of the effects of different exit strategies. Based on these questions, we propose a roadmap to facilitate the development of reliable models to guide exit strategies. The roadmap requires a global collaborative effort from the scientific community and policy-makers, and is made up of three parts: i) improve estimation of key epidemiological parameters;ii) understand sources of heterogeneity in populations;iii) focus on requirements for data collection, particularly in Low-to-Middle-Income countries. This will provide important information for planning exit strategies that balance socio-economic benefits with public health. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The concepts of microrobots has been drawn significant attentions recently since its unprecedented applicability in nanotechnology and biomedical field. Bacteria attached microparticles presented in this work are one of pioneering microrobot technology for self-propulsion or producing kinetic energy from ambient for their motions. Microfluidic device, especially utilizing laminar flow characteristics, were employed for anisotropic attachment of Salmonella typhimurium flagellated chemotactic bacteria to 30 um × 30 um and 50 um × 50 um microparticles that made of biodegradable polymer. Any toxic chemicals or harmful treatments were excluded during the attachment process and it finished within 100 s for the anisotropic attachment. The attachments were directly confirmed by fluorescent intensity changes and SEM visualization. Chemotaxis motions were tracked using aspartate and the maximum velocity of the bacteria-attached microrobot was measured to be ~5 um/s which is comparable to prior state of art technologies. This reusable and scalable method could play a key role in chemotaxis delivery of functional microparticles such as drug delivery system. © 2016, Huh et al.

Membrane computing, a recent branch of natural computing, has been gaining momentum attention in the last few decades due to its massive parallelism and efficient computation. Many researchers in the field of membrane computing have proposed sophisticated techniques inspired by cell biology for computer science applications, especially when they considered cell organization in tissues, organs, and most recently, from the organization of neurons. The interdisciplinary applications of membrane computing include, but not limited to computer science, biology, biomedicine, bioinformatics and several other fields such as mathematics, artificial intelligence, automation, economics, to name but a few. Their applications are pertaining to computer graphics, approximate optimization, cryptography, parallel computing and image processing. Hence, in this paper we present an up to date comprehensive literature review pertaining to the application of membrane computing in the area of digital image analysis, especially image segmentation, comprehensively and systematically. We thoroughly investigate the recent advancement in the field of image segmentation using membrane system. Furthermore, we highlight the merits and demerits of various software tools and methods. Cloud storage has been gaining tremendous popularity among individuals and corporations because of its low maintenance cost and on-demand services for the clients. To improve the availability and the reliability of critical data, storing multiple replicas on multiple servers is a commonly used strategy. Currently, several provable data possession (PDP) protocols for multiple replicas of dynamic data have been proposed to ensure the integrity of outsourced multi-copy data, but the efficiency of these protocols on verifying multiple replicas one by one is not satisfactory. In this paper, we propose a provable multiple replication data possession protocol with full dynamics, named MR-DPDP. In MR-DPDP, we utilize a novel authenticated data structure called Merkle hash tree with rank to support both full dynamic data updates and efficient integrity verification. In addition, our construction with RSA signature can support both variable-sized file blocks and public verification. Through security proof and performance evaluation, we demonstrate that MR-DPDP not only is sound but also incurs less communication overhead when updating data blocks as well as verifying a proof of the integrity of multiple replicas. Graph coloring is a fundamental NP-hard problem in graph theory. It has a wide range of real applications, such as Operations Research, Communication Network, Computational Biology and Compiler Optimization. Notable efforts have been spent on designing its approximation algorithms. Halldrsson proposed the algorithm (denoted as SampleIS) with the current best known approximation ratio. However, its time complexity is O(|G|3), where |G| is the number of vertices of a graph G. It is clear that SampleIS is not practical for large graphs. In this paper, we propose a practical vertex-cut based coloring technique (VColor) for coloring large graphs. First, we partition G into k connected components (CCs) of a small size s by removing a vertex-cut component (VCC). For each CC, we apply our novel coloring algorithm, based on maximal independent set enumeration. The approximation ratio and the time complexity for coloring the k CCs are log s + 1 and O(ks23s/3), respectively, whereas those of SampleIS are ks(log log ks)2/ log3 ks and O(k3s3). For the VCC, we simply apply SampleIS. To combine the colorings of the CCs and the VCC, we propose a maximum matching based algorithm. Second, in the context of a database of graphs, users may color many graphs. We propose an optimization technique, inspired by multi-query optimization, for coloring a set of graphs. We design a VP hierarchy (VPH) to represent the common subgraphs as the common CCs. Third, we propose techniques for determining the optimal values of the parameters of VColor. Our extensive experimental evaluation on real-world graphs confirms the efficiency and/or effectiveness of our proposed techniques. In particular, VColor is more than 500 times faster than SampleIS, and the number of colors used are comparable on real graphs Yeast and LS.

Internet of Things (IoT) is a new paradigm that refers to a world-wide network of interconnected physical things using standardized communication protocols to provide human useful services such as personal health care and green energy monitoring. Nowadays, many third party service providers are providing a large number of IoT services. Recommending IoT services to users based on objects they own will become very crucial for the success of IoT. In this paper, we investigate the possibilities of leveraging recommendation algorithms, especially graph-based, to IoT. We propose a hyper-graph model for IoT systems in which each hyper-edge connects users, objects, and services. Next, we conduct experiment to analyze and explore correlations between performances of different algorithms on IoT Service Recommendation (IoTSRS) based on existing well known metrics. Results show that the graph-based recommendation algorithm can be used to develop an effective recommender system for IoT. Moreover, we show that some algorithms perform reasonably well and produce high quality results. However, further extension of existing approaches is required for IoTSRS.
