With the explosive growth of information, recommendation systems have emerged to alleviate the problem of information overload. In order to improve the performance of recommendation systems, many existing methods introduce Large Language Models to extract textual information from description text. However, Large Language Models are trained on large-scale generic textual data and may face a semantic gap for downstream recommendation tasks. To address the above issues, we propose Contrastive Learning for Adapting Language Model to Sequential Recommendation (CLA-Rec). In CLA-Rec, we first extract text embeddings from description text using Large Language Models and align the text embeddings learned by Large Language Models with the collaborative information through contrastive learning to obtain high-quality item representations. Through semantic alignment, we bridge the semantic gap between Large Language Models and the recommendation task. To map textual information and collaborative information into user representations, we utilize a Transformer model to learn user representations and capture user preferences by combining the semantically aligned item representations. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches on multiple evaluation metrics, illustrating the effectiveness of the CLA-Rec model in adapting Large Language Models to recommendation tasks. © 2024 IEEE.

Container based microservices have been widely applied to promote the cloud elasticity. The mainstream Docker containers are structured in layers, which are organized in stack with bottom-up dependency. To start a microservice, the required layers are pulled from a remote registry and stored on its host server, following the layer dependency order. This incurs long microservice startup time and hinders the performance efficiency. In this paper, we discover that, for the first time, the layer pulling order can be adjusted to accelerate the microservice startup. Specifically, we address the problem on microservice layer pulling orchestration for startup time minimization and prove it as NP-hard. We propose a Longest-chain based Out-of-order layer Pulling Orchestration (LOPO) strategy with low computational complexity and guaranteed approximation ratio. Through extensive real-world trace driven experiments, we verify the efficiency of our LOPO and demonstrate that it reduces the microservice startup time by 22.71% on average in comparison with state-of-the-art solutions. © 2023 IEEE.

In the evolving landscape of sequential recommendation systems, the application of Large Language Models (LLMs) is increasingly prominent. However, current attempts typically utilize general-purpose LLMs, which present a mismatch in capability and a large semantic gap relative to the specialized needs of recommendation tasks. To tackle these issues, we introduce RecCoder, an innovative model that reformulates sequential recommendation as a code completion task. This approach leverages the superior reasoning capability of code LLMs as a backbone, aligning well with the requirements of recommendation systems. To bridge the semantic gap, RecCoder creates extra tokens for each item and employs item content to initialize token embeddings. Furthermore, we have developed a suite of Semantic Adaptation Fine-tuning tasks, tailored to enhance the model's acquisition of both content and collaborative semantic information, thus aligning the model's intrinsic capabilities with the unique demands of recommendation tasks. Through extensive testing on three public datasets, RecCoder has shown remarkable improvements over existing models in terms of recommendation accuracy and efficiency. This success highlights the substantial yet previously underexplored potential of code LLMs in improving recommendation accuracy and efficiency, suggesting a promising new direction for future research in this area. Federated learning (FL) enables massive clients to collaboratively train a global model by aggregating their local updates without disclosing raw data. Communication has become one of the main bottlenecks that prolongs the training process, especially under large model variances due to skewed data distributions. Existing efforts mainly focus on either single momentum-based gradient descent, or random client selection for potential variance reduction, yet both often lead to poor model accuracy and system efficiency. In this paper, we propose FedMoS, a communication-efficient FL framework with coupled double momentum-based update and adaptive client selection, to jointly mitigate the intrinsic variance. Specifically, FedMoS maintains customized momentum buffers on both server and client sides, which track global and local update directions to alleviate the model discrepancy. Taking momentum results as input, we design an adaptive selection scheme to provide a proper client representation during FL aggregation. By optimally calibrating clients' selection probabilities, we can effectively reduce the sampling variance, while ensuring unbiased aggregation. Through a rigid analysis, we show that FedMoS can attain the theoretically optimal O(T - 2/3) convergence rate. Extensive experiments using real-world datasets further validate the superiority of FedMoS, with 58%-87% communication reduction for achieving the same target performance compared to state-of-the-art techniques. © 2023 IEEE.

We proposed a permutation invariant agent-specific centralized critic using graph convolutional networks in multiagent reinforcement learning. We consider an environment with partial observability where a joint observation of homogeneous agents is used as a state information in centralized training. A joint observation of homogeneous agents is permutation invariant, meaning that different permutations must be treated as the same. However, a traditional deep network like multilayer perceptron (MLP) outputs different values to different permutations, despite being the same data. A centralized critic using MLPs to represent joint observation of homogeneous agents suffers from data inefficiency because it only learns a single permutation instead of all permutations. Previous work has addressed this problem using graph convolutional networks (GCN) for “agent-agnostic’' centralized critics. Our work extends the use of GCNs to an “agent-specific’' centralized critic such as the critic used in Counterfactual Multi-Agent Policy Gradients (COMA) algorithm. We introduce three GCN variants of agentspecific critic architectures. Our experimental results on the multi-agent particle environment with COMA algorithm show that all GCN critics outperform the MLP baseline critics. Finally, we concluded that as the number of agents increases, the critic that takes advantage of agent homogeneity by separating global and local feature representation is the most scalable in terms of time complexity.

Kidney stones are primarily crystals formed from ion oversaturation in urine. Currently, the diagnosis of kidney stones involves experienced professionals manually interpreting images of urinary crystals under a microscope. In recent years, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), many researchers have proposed various methods to assist in diagnosis, hoping to improve medical quality. This study explored the application of AI in the medical field, aiming to automate the interpretation of urinary crystal images, such as red blood corpuscles (RBCs), calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM), calcium oxalate dihydrate octahedron (COD-OCT), calcium oxalate dihydrate dodecahedron (COD-DOD), debris, and others, and to use image processing techniques to classify urinary crystal types. This research is expected to assist medical personnel in quickly determining the categories of urinary crystals. Ultimately, our model achieved an F1-score of 0.93, indicating that this architecture has significant potential. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

Many patients with leukoaraiosis (LA) exhibit mild and difficult-to-detect symptoms in the early stages, and due to the lack of effective detection methods, the optimal timing for treatment is often missed. This not only makes later treatment more difficult but, in severe cases, can even lead to mild to severe dementia. Therefore, in addition to relying on radiologists to manually interpret magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, finding more effective detection methods has become extremely urgent. This study aimed to combine image processing and deep learning technologies to develop a model capable of accurately identifying and segmenting white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) to assist doctors in the early diagnosis of LA. We first performed efficient preprocessing on MR image slices from two different series and used the ResNet18 model to identify key slices containing WMHs, ultimately achieving precise segmentation of WMH areas with the U-Net model. This research focused on developing innovative preprocessing techniques, improving the accuracy by 12.3% with a limited dataset through preprocessing. Ultimately, the ResNet18 model achieved an F1 score of 0.829, while the U-Net model’s intersection over union (IoU) and Dice coefficient reached 0.750 and 0.857, respectively, showing the potential of this architecture. We propose improvements in the final chapter to construct a more comprehensive model. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

In recent years, many fields have expanded their research methods through the integration of artificial intelligence. In the current medical field, it is widely used in image recognition to diagnose patient symptoms, train clinical prediction models, and improve clinical workflow processes to avoid missing treatment opportunities. These methods have all achieved good results so far. Now, generative AI is also impacting the development of the medical field, not only generating prescriptions that match patient conditions but also being applied in generating medical images for data augmentation and simulating various pathological conditions, thereby aiding in training deep learning models. Stroke is a leading cause of death or disability, ranking as the second leading cause of death worldwide, next to cancer. If cancers were categorized individually, stroke would surpass all single diseases, making it a primary focus of research in brain disease treatment. There are already studies where generative AI has been used to create medical images, which are then manually evaluated by doctors to determine if they were generated by AI. In this project, we plan to generate CT images of strokes using generative AI and use a trained model (to diagnose stroke) to improve accuracy. Through this project, we hope to solve the problem of scarce stroke CT images while also providing support for training stroke-related models. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) often presents only mild symptoms in its early stages, and as there is no direct diagnostic method currently available, many patients are diagnosed only after the condition has worsened. Considering that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide key information in the diagnosis of AD, but the condition may go undiagnosed under manual interpretation due to the subtleness of symptoms and the reliance on radiologists to interpret MRI images, this study aimed to develop an automated method for interpreting brain MR images, hoping to screen for potential AD patients. By combining image processing, the U-Net model, YOLOv8 model, various CNN model architectures, and ensemble data statistics, our method was able to identify features related to AD and predict whether a patient has the disease. Our method can process a complete set of MR images and automatically extract important slices for prediction, making it practical for medical applications. Furthermore, we tested the accuracy and reliability of the method with additional datasets. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

With the exponential growth of video data, video summarization techniques are urgently needed for reducing people's efforts in the videos' content exploration by generating succinct but informative summaries from original lengthy videos. Though supervised video summarization approaches have demonstrated the state-of-the-art performance, unsupervised methods are still highly demanded due to resourcefully expensive human annotations and the subjectiveness of video summarization tasks. In this paper, a novel unsupervised-based Deep Self-attention Recurrent summarization network with Reinforcement Learning (DSR-RL) for video summarization is proposed. The model can learn the input video sequence and suggest the key-shot summary without additional human annotations by integrating self-attention, BRNN, and reinforcement learning mechanisms. The DSR-RL improves not only importance score through the attention map vector of self-attention network but also the diversity of summaries via the reward function of reinforcement learning. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised video summarization methods on both SumMe and TVSum datasets. The source code is available at https://***/phaphuang/DSR-RL. © 2021 IEEE
