Mobile edge computing (MEC) as a potential technology can offload tasks from user devices (UDs) to network edges to alleviate network congestion and reduce task execution delay. However, computation offloading faces two challenges: 1) Poor wireless channel quality causes high transmission delay; 2) Computing tasks may be obtained by eavesdroppers (Eves) during task offloading. Therefore, we consider deploying intel-ligent reflecting surface (IRS) in MEC networks to increase data transmission rate and ensure data transmission security. This paper investigates the issue of joint computation offloading and resource allocation in a multi-IRS assisted MEC network. Our goal is to minimize task execution delay. To address this problem, we propose a multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient algorithm to determine the optimal offloading strategy for each UD. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce task execution delay and ensure data transmission security.

Computation offloading is widely used in vehicular edge computing (VEC) networks to satisfy the computational intensity and latency sensitivity requirements. However, many existing offloading algorithms do not comprehensively consider the dynamically changing characteristics of heterogeneous tasks within a roadside unit (RSU), resulting in tasks timeout and being dropped. In this paper, we design a competitive and cooperative computation offloading (C3O) model to reduce task execution latency. Specifically, when intensive heterogeneous tasks are generated, these vehicles jointly compete for the computing resource of a RSU, or they can also offload tasks to the task vehicle (TaV) with free computing resource. Meanwhile, We analyze the latency model of local execution and offloading to RSU or TaV execution and formulate a sequential task offloading decision problem, NP-hard. To address it, we propose a multi-agent reinforcement learning algorithm based on C3O (MARC3O) to intelligently determine the computation offloading policy for each vehicle according to the state of VEC networks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce task execution latency and improve task completion rates compared with baseline schemes.

Arbitrary-scale super-resolution (ASSR) aims to learn a single model for image super-resolution at arbitrary magnifying scales. Existing ASSR networks typically comprise an off-the-shelf scale-agnostic feature extractor and an arbitrary scale upsampler. These feature extractors often use fixed network architectures to address different ASSR inference tasks, each of which is characterized by an input image and an upsampling scale. However, this overlooks the difficulty variance of super-resolution on different inference scenarios, where simple images or small SR scales could be resolved with less computational effort than difficult images or large SR scales. To tackle this difficulty variability, in this paper, we propose a Task-Aware Dynamic Transformer (TADT) as an input-adaptive feature extractor for efficient image ASSR. Our TADT consists of a multi-scale feature extraction backbone built upon groups of Multi-Scale Transformer Blocks (MSTBs) and a Task-Aware Routing Controller (TARC). The TARC predicts the inference paths within feature extraction backbone, specifically selecting MSTBs based on the input images and SR scales. The prediction of inference path is guided by a new loss function to trade-off the SR accuracy and efficiency. Experiments demonstrate that, when working with three popular arbitrary-scale upsamplers, our TADT achieves state-of-the-art ASSR performance when compared with mainstream feature extractors, but with relatively fewer computational costs. CMCache: An Adaptive Cross-Level data Placement Method for Multi-Level Cache

Multi-level cache systems enhance I/O performance by optimizing data placement across various cache levels from a global perspective. However, existing methods often struggle to place data at the optimal cache level promptly due to their reliance on historical access patterns and inflexible placement strategies. These methods face two main challenges: (1) For already cached data with sufficient access history, existing approaches only optimize movement between adjacent cache levels, potentially delaying data arrival at its globally optimal cache level and leading to unnecessary bandwidth consumption and increased latency. (2) For newly entered data without access history, current methods cannot accurately predict their future hotness and simply place them at a fixed cache level (i.e. first or last level), overlooking future accesses of new data and potentially resulting in high cache miss rates or cache pollution. To address these issues, we propose CMCache, an adaptive cross-level data placement method for multi-level cache. CMCache applies distinct placement strategies for cached and new data to reach the optimal level timely, considering their different characteristics. It also logically divides cache space into two sections to manage cached and new data separately, dynamically adjusting section sizes based on access patterns. This approach significantly improves data placement efficiency, achieving up to an 89% reduction in miss rates and a 79% decrease in average response times compared to existing methods. © 2025 IEEE.

Cooperative co-evolution (CC) is a promising direction in solving large-scale multiobjective optimization problems (LMOPs). However, most existing methods of grouping decision variables face some difficulties when searching in the huge search space. Specifically, the methods of grouping decision variables can be classified into two types, i.e., high-consumption grouping methods and non-consumption grouping methods. On the one hand, the former ones divide the decision variables into different groups based on the correlation analysis between variables, which consume much evaluation. This way may lead to premature convergence within limited computational resources. On the other hand, the later ones allocate the decision variables into sub-groups based on some metrics, e.g., order and size, which consume no evaluation while may cause the search fall into local optima. To alleviate the above issues, this paper proposes a CC-based algorithm with a variable-importance grouping (VIG) method, called VICCA. Firstly, the decision variables are classified into several subgroups according to their importance quantified by a meta-gene construction method. Secondly, a CC strategy is designed to simultaneously optimize all subgroups of decision variables formed by VIG using the differential evolution operator, which aims to accelerate the convergence speed. Thirdly, a global evolutionary strategy is proposed to optimize original decision variable space by the competitive swarm optimizer, aiming to maintain the diversity. Finally, the experiments demonstrate that our proposed VICCA has the significant advantage in solving LMOPs when compared with state-of-the-art evolutionary algorithms. © 2024 IEEE.

Keeping Pace with Ever-Increasing data: Towards Continual Learning of Code Intelligence Models

—Previous research on code intelligence usually trains a deep learning model on a fixed dataset in an offline manner. However, in real-world scenarios, new code repositories emerge incessantly, and the carried new knowledge is beneficial for providing up-to-date code intelligence services to developers. In this paper, we aim at the following problem: How to enable code intelligence models to continually learn from ever-increasing data? One major challenge here is catastrophic forgetting, meaning that the model can easily forget knowledge learned from previous datasets when learning from the new dataset. To tackle this challenge, we propose REPEAT, a novel method for continual learning of code intelligence models. Specifically, REPEAT addresses the catastrophic forgetting problem with representative exemplars replay and adaptive parameter regularization. The representative exemplars replay component selects informative and diverse exemplars in each dataset and uses them to retrain model periodically. The adaptive parameter regularization component recognizes important parameters in the model and adaptively penalizes their changes to preserve the knowledge learned before. We evaluate the proposed approach on three code intelligence tasks including code summarization, software vulnerability detection, and code clone detection. Extensive experiments demonstrate that REPEAT consistently outperforms baseline methods on all tasks. For example, REPEAT improves the conventional fine-tuning method by 1.22, 5.61, and 1.72 on code summarization, vulnerability detection and clone detection, respectively. To address network congestion and data privacy concerns, federated learning (FL) that combines multiple clients and a parameter server has been widely used in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks to process the abundant data generated by mobile clients. However, the existing client sampling methods do not adequately consider the data heterogeneity and system heterogeneity. Parameter server selects inappropriate clients to participate in the FL training process. This inevitably leads to slower convergence of the global model and higher energy consumption. In this paper, we design a client sampling model with the goal of selecting suitable clients to improve the energy efficiency of FL in heterogeneous MEC networks. Then we propose an energy-efficient client sampling strategy by quantifying the communication capability, computation capability and data quality of clients. Based on the quantization results, clients are assigned with a corresponding sampled probability. Simulation results show that our proposed strategy can effectively accelerate the convergence of the global model and reduce the energy consumption compared with the baseline schemes.

The development of effective drug therapies is a complex and multifaceted problem involving various biological, chemical, and computational challenges. Traditional drug development methods are often time-consuming and costly, necessitating innovative approaches. Multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGAs) have emerged as a powerful tool for optimizing drug design by simultaneously considering multiple conflicting objectives, such as efficacy, safety, and cost. This paper reviews the application of MOGAs in drug discovery, highlighting their principles, advantages, and case studies, and discussing future directions in the field. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are a powerful class of optimization techniques inspired by the principles of natural selection and genetics. One of the theoretical cornerstones of GAs is schema theory, which provides a framework for understanding how building blocks of solutions, known as schemas, are propagated and combined through generations. This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive theoretical analysis of schema formation in genetic algorithms. It delves into the foundational principles of schema theory, including the schema theorem and its implications for the efficiency and behavior of GAs. The paper also explores advanced topics such as schema disruption mechanisms, the impact of multimodal and epistatic fitness landscapes, and the integration of schema theory with hybrid approaches. Additionally, practical implications and real-world applications of schema theory are discussed through case studies and best practices. By elucidating the mechanisms of schema formation and their influence on genetic algorithm performance, this review seeks to offer valuable insights and directions for future research. Sequential recommendation systems dynamically predict the users’ next behaviors from chronological historical records to provide more accurate recommendations. However, in many real-world scenarios, recommenders find it difficult to make recommendations for cold-start users who have limited interactions with items. To address this issue, existing methods utilize auxiliary information to capture user preferences, which have achieved performance improvement to some extent. But with the gradual awareness of personal privacy, external information becomes difficult to obtain. Therefore, we develop a novel model called Path-based sequential Recommender for cold-start users (PathRec). PathRec exploits the rich sequential dependencies within the interactive paths to give reasonable recommendations for cold-start users without additional external information. Specifically, (i) PathRec constructs the global graph to learn the representations of the items. (ii) Then, PathRec elaborately selects the sampled paths to derive the underlying dependencies of the cold-start sequence. (iii) Finally, PathRec provides rich and complementary information to user-item interactions by strongly coupling the paths to give suitable recommendations. Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of PathRec.
