We propose for the first time a new strategy to train slice-level classifiers on CT scans based on the descriptors of the adjacent slices along the axis. In particular, each of which is extracted through a convolutional neural network (CNN). This method is applicable to CT datasets with per-slice labels such as the RSNA Intracranial Hemorrhage (ICH) dataset, which aims to predict the presence of ICH and classify it into 5 different sub-types. We obtain a single model in the top 4% best-performing solutions of the RSNA ICH challenge, where model ensembles are allowed. Experiments also show that the proposed method significantly outperforms the baseline model on CQ500. The proposed method is general and can be applied to other 3D medical diagnosis tasks such as MRI imaging. To encourage new advances in the field, we will make our codes and pre-trained model available upon acceptance of the paper.

Video2Reward: Generating Reward Function from Videos for Legged Robot Behavior Learning

Learning behavior in legged robots presents a significant challenge due to its inherent instability and complex constraints. Recent research has proposed the use of a large language model (LLM) to generate reward functions in reinforcement learning, thereby replacing the need for manually designed rewards by experts. However, this approach, which relies on textual descriptions to define learning objectives, fails to achieve controllable and precise behavior learning with clear directionality. In this paper, we introduce a new video2reward method, which directly generates reward functions from videos depicting the behaviors to be mimicked and learned. Specifically, we first process videos containing the target behaviors, converting the motion information of individuals in the videos into keypoint trajectories represented as coordinates through a video2text transforming module. These trajectories are then fed into an LLM to generate the reward function, which in turn is used to train the policy. To enhance the quality of the reward function, we develop a video-assisted iterative reward refinement scheme that visually assesses the learned behaviors and provides textual feedback to the LLM. This feedback guides the LLM to continually refine the reward function, ultimately facilitating more efficient behavior learning. Experimental results on tasks involving bipedal and quadrupedal robot motion control demonstrate that our method surpasses the performance of state-of-the-art LLM-based reward generation methods by over 37.6% in terms of human normalized score. More importantly, by switching video inputs, we find our method can rapidly learn diverse motion behaviors such as walking and running. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the proliferation of RFID-enabled applications, multiple readers are required for the complete coverage of numerous tags in a large-scale RFID system. In this scenario, we sometimes pay more attention to a subset of tags instead of all, which are referred to as key tags. In this paper, we study an under-investigated problem key tag distribution identification, which aims to identify which key tags are beneath which readers. This is crucial for efficiently managing specific items of interest, which can quickly pinpoint key tags and help RFID readers covering these tags collaborate to improve the tag inventory efficiency. Since key tags typically make up a small part of all tags, it is time consuming to deal with all tags in the traditional way. We propose a protocol called Kadept that identifies the key tag distribution by using a sophisticatedly designed filter that teases out key tags as well as assigns each of them a singleton slot for response. With this design, a great number of trivial (non-key) tags will keep silent and free up bandwidth resources for key tags, and each key tag is sorted in a collision-free way and can be identified with only 1-bit response, which significantly improves the time efficiency. We theoretically analyze how can we optimize protocol parameters of Kadept and conduct extensive simulations under different tag distribution scenarios. Compared with the state-of-the-art, Kadept can improve the time efficiency by a factor of 3.7×, when the ratio of key tags to all tags is 0.1.

Integrating personalization into federated learning is crucial for addressing data heterogeneity and surpassing the limitations of a single aggregated model. Personalized federated learning excels at capturing inter-client similarities and meeting diverse client needs through custom-made models. However, even with personalized approaches, it’s essential to aggregate knowledge among clients to ensure universal benefits. This paper proposes Federated Dual Objectives and Dual Models (FedDodm), a novel approach that employs two independent models to separately address explicit personalization and implicit generalization objectives in personalized federated learning. By treating these objectives as distinct loss functions and training models accordingly, we achieve a balance between the two through a fusion method. Extensive experiments across various models and learning tasks demonstrate that FedDodm outperforms state-of-the-art federated learning approaches, marking a significant advancement in effectively integrating personalized and generalized knowledge.

We consider ergodic weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization in a massive multi-user multiple-input multiple-output system. Existing solutions iteratively minimize the average WSR based on all the historical information, and use bisection search to satisfy the power constraint at each iteration, resulting in both high storage burden and high computational complexity. In contrast, we propose an efficient stochastic proximal weighted minimum mean-square error (SPWMMSE) algorithm, which updates the precoder only based on the current single channel realization, without checking the power constraint at each iteration. Furthermore, we propose a novel proximal term to incorporate all the previous channel and surrogate function information in precoder updates. Our analysis shows that SPWMMSE converges to the stationary point of the original ergodic WSR maximization problem almost surely. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of SPWMMSE over the current best alternatives.

In recent years, the detection of infrared small targets using deep learning methods has garnered substantial attention due to notable advancements. To improve the detection capability of small targets, these methods commonly maintain a pathway that preserves high-resolution features of sparse and tiny targets. However, it can result in redundant and expensive computations. To tackle this challenge, we propose SpirDet, a novel approach for efficient detection of infrared small targets. Specifically, to cope with the computational redundancy issue, we employ a new dual-branch sparse decoder to restore the feature map. Firstly, the fast branch directly predicts a sparse map indicating potential small target locations (occupying only 0.5% area of the map). Secondly, the slow branch conducts fine-grained adjustments at the positions indicated by the sparse map. Additionally, we design an lightweight DO-RepEncoder based on reparameterization with the Downsampling Orthogonality, which can effectively reduce memory consumption and inference latency. Extensive experiments show that the proposed SpirDet significantly outperforms state-of-the-art models while achieving faster inference speed and fewer parameters. For example, on the IRSTD-1K dataset, SpirDet improves MIoU by 4.7 and has a 7× FPS acceleration compared to the previous state-of-the-art model. The code will be open to the public. © 2024, CC BY.

Functional connectivity networks (FCNs), particularly those utilizing the phase lag index (PLI) method, have been instrumental in elucidating the pathological features of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) by assessing the synchrony and lag of electroencephalogram (EEG) signal waveforms. Currently, the more prevalent methods are traditional FCNs that quantify phase synchronization as scalar values and dynamic FCNs (D-FCNs) that employ sliding window approaches to capture the instantaneous variations in functional connectivity. However, these two methods merely capture the low-level functional connections between paired regions of interest (ROIs) from both the static and dynamic perspectives, and fail to reflect the high-level functional connections involving multiple ROIs. Moreover, the feature dimension of the dynamic FCN is excessively high, and there exists a phase mismatch issue between different samples, which renders it impossible to be directly applied to the classification task, and no better solution is available at present. To mitigate these issues, we proposed a comprehensive framework that includes segmenting EEG sequences based on PLI to construct dynamic FCNs;employing seventh-order central moments for feature extraction to form low-order FCNs (Lo-FCNs);and establishing high-order FCNs (Ho-FCNs) based on Pearson correlation theory derived from Lo-FCNs. We conducted classification experiments across four distinct EEG frequency bands using our proposed framework while analyzing relevant features through graph theory and brain topological mapping techniques. The experiments showed that the proposed framework has a high classification accuracy rate in the classification experiments of MDD and NC, and proved the importance of high-order features in classification experiments, indicating that they may serve as physiological markers for MDD diagnosis. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

With the rapid economic development in the North China Plain, the significant emissions of black carbon (BC) aerosol have exerted notable impacts on climate, environment, and health, making it a hot topic in environmental studies in recent years. To compensate for the insufficient ground monitoring data, the PM2.5 satellite remote sensing inversion data and chemical model simulation data were utilized, applying the proportionality factor method to estimate the satellite concentration of BC. The estimation results were validated using BC monitoring data from seven stations in 2018, and based on this, the spatiotemporal variations of BC satellite concentration was obtained. The results showed that the estimated BC concentration using the proportionality factor method had good accuracy, with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.72. The spatial distribution of BC over the North China Plain in 2018 exhibited a decreasing trend from the inner region to the outer region, with high concentration areas mainly located in provinces with high straw burning and steel production. The seasonal variation of BC in the North China Plain in 2018 was pronounced, showing higher concentrations in autumn and winter and lower concentrations in spring and summer. © 2023 SPIE.

This paper considers exploiting reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in a multi-user multi-access mobile computing (MEC) system. To precisely model the traffic behaviors of the tasks, we consider queuing procedures at both mobile users and the cloud server. This consideration leads to concatenation of queues and makes our problem much more difficult than existing literature since analytic expression of the objective is impossible. Our goal is to jointly optimize the task scheduling, RIS configuration and computation resource allocation to improve the MEC network's overall computation rate in the long run while maintaining the stability of the queues. To tackle this highly challenging stochastic problem, we develop a Lyapunov guided deep reinforcement learning (DRL) solution, which borrows the Lyapunov optimization theory to stabilize queues and at the same time can effectively optimize the intractable objective in an online manner. Numerical results will be presented to verify the effectiveness of our solution and the performance boost due to the deployment of RIS. © 2022 IEEE.
