A survey on cross-user federated recommendation

Recommender systems are effective in mitigating information overload, yet the centralized storage of user data raises significant privacy concerns. Cross-user federated recommendation(CUFR) provides a promising distributed paradigm to address these concerns by enabling privacy-preserving recommendations directly on user devices. In this survey, we review and categorize current progress in CUFR, focusing on four key aspects: privacy, security, accuracy, and efficiency. Firstly,we conduct an in-depth privacy analysis, discuss various cases of privacy leakage, and then review recent methods for privacy protection. Secondly, we analyze security concerns and review recent methods for untargeted and targeted *** untargeted attack methods, we categorize them into data poisoning attack methods and parameter poisoning attack methods. For targeted attack methods, we categorize them into user-based methods and item-based methods. Thirdly,we provide an overview of the federated variants of some representative methods, and then review the recent methods for improving accuracy from two categories: data heterogeneity and high-order information. Fourthly, we review recent methods for improving training efficiency from two categories: client sampling and model compression. Finally, we conclude this survey and explore some potential future research topics in CUFR.

Unraveling the intricacies of EEG seizure detection: A comprehensive exploration of machine learning model performance, interpretability, and clinical insights

In neurology, it is critical to promptly and precisely identify epileptic episodes using EEG data. Interpretability and thorough model evaluation are still crucial to guarantee reliability, even though machine learning provides sophisticated tools for automated EEG analysis. We undertook a thorough investigation of EEG seizure classification in this work, with equal emphasis on statistical validation, interpretability, and model performance. Following thorough preprocessing, we used statistical significance tests in conjunction with Chernoff and Bhattacharyya Bounds to select features. Top performers were found to be the Random Forest which had accuracies of 96%. A paired t-test and bootstrapped 95% confidence intervals were used to statistically validate the performance robustness, demonstrating the large variation in model performances. Going beyond simple performance measures, we set out to decipher the nuances of model choices by utilizing methods devoted to model interpretability and shedding light on the importance of distinct aspects. This helped neurologists grasp the primary EEG indicators predictive of seizures and opened the door for future clinical insights. It also provided transparency in diagnostic predictions. Our efforts highlight the mutually reinforcing importance of predictability and model interpretability in the context of medical machine-learning applications, hence intensifying the demand for the creation and use of trustworthy and transparent neurology diagnostic instruments. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This paper focuses on the task of few-shot 3D point cloud semantic *** some progress,this task still encounters many issues due to the insufficient samples given,e.g.,incomplete object segmentation and inaccurate semantic *** tackle these issues,we first leverage part-whole relationships into the task of 3D point cloud semantic segmentation to capture semantic integrity,which is empowered by the dynamic capsule routing with the module of 3D Capsule Networks(CapsNets)in the embedding ***,the dynamic routing amalgamates geometric information of the 3D point cloud data to construct higher-level feature representations,which capture the relationships between object parts and their ***,we designed a multi-prototype enhancement module to enhance the prototype ***,the single-prototype enhancement mechanism is expanded to the multi-prototype enhancement version for capturing rich ***,the shot-correlation within the category is calculated via the interaction of different samples to enhance the intra-category *** studies prove that the involved part-whole relations and proposed multi-prototype enhancement module help to achieve complete object segmentation and improve semantic ***,under the integration of these two modules,quantitative and qualitative experiments on two public benchmarks,including S3DIS and ScanNet,indicate the superior performance of the proposed framework on the task of 3D point cloud semantic segmentation,compared to some state-of-the-art methods.

When data privacy is imposed as a necessity,Federated learning(FL)emerges as a relevant artificial intelligence field for developing machine learning(ML)models in a distributed and decentralized *** allows ML models to be trained on local devices without any need for centralized data transfer,thereby reducing both the exposure of sensitive data and the possibility of data interception by malicious third *** paradigm has gained momentum in the last few years,spurred by the plethora of real-world applications that have leveraged its ability to improve the efficiency of distributed learning and to accommodate numerous participants with their data *** virtue of FL,models can be learned from all such distributed data sources while preserving data *** aim of this paper is to provide a practical tutorial on FL,including a short methodology and a systematic analysis of existing software ***,our tutorial provides exemplary cases of study from three complementary perspectives:i)Foundations of FL,describing the main components of FL,from key elements to FL categories;ii)Implementation guidelines and exemplary cases of study,by systematically examining the functionalities provided by existing software frameworks for FL deployment,devising a methodology to design a FL scenario,and providing exemplary cases of study with source code for different ML approaches;and iii)Trends,shortly reviewing a non-exhaustive list of research directions that are under active investigation in the current FL *** ultimate purpose of this work is to establish itself as a referential work for researchers,developers,and data scientists willing to explore the capabilities of FL in practical applications.

A Multimodal Multiobjective Evolutionary Algorithm for Filter Feature Selection in Multilabel Classification

Multilabel learning is an emergent topic that addresses the challenge of associating multiple labels with a single instance simultaneously. Multilabel datasets often exhibit high dimensionality with noisy, irrelevant, and redundant features. In recent years, multilabel feature selection (MLFS) has gained prominence as a crucial and emerging machine learning task due to its ability to handle such data effectively. However, existing approaches for MLFS often prioritize top-ranked features based on intrinsic data criteria, disregarding relationships within the feature subset. Additionally, compared with conventional feature selection, multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) have not been widely explored in the context of MLFS. This study aims to address these gaps by proposing a multimodal multiobjective evolutionary algorithm (MMOEA) called MMDE_SICD which incorporates a preelimination scheme, an improved initialization scheme, an exploration scheme inspired by genetic operations and a statistically inspired crowding distance scheme. The results show that the proposed MMDE_SICD algorithm can outperform a variety of MOEAs and MMOEAs as well as conventional MLFS algorithms. Notably, this study is the first of its kind to consider MLFS as a multimodal multiobjective problem. © 2020 IEEE.

Heart rate variability analysis in controls and epilepsy patients with or without receiving treatment: a clinical review and meta-analysis

The malfunctioning of cardiac autonomic control in epileptic patients develops ventricular tachyarrhythmia and causes sudden unexpected death in epilepsy patients (SUDEP). Various clinical studies investigated the effect of epilepsy on cardiac autonomic control by performing heart rate variability (HRV) analysis;however, results are unclear regarding whether sympathetic, parasympathetic, or both branches of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are affected in epilepsy and also the impact of anticonvulsant treatment on the ANS. This study follows the systematic protocols to investigate epilepsy and its anticonvulsant treatment on cardiac autonomic control by using linear and nonlinear HRV analysis measures. The electronic databases of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were used for the collection of studies. Initially, 1475 articles were identified whereas after 2-staged exclusion criteria, 33 studies were selected for execution of the review process and meta-analysis. For meta-analysis, four comparisons were performed (epilepsy patients): (1) controls (healthy subject with no history of epilepsy) versus untreated patients;(2) treated (patients under treatment that have a seizure) versus untreated patients;(3) controls versus treated patients;and (4) refractory versus well-controlled (epilepsy patients that were seizure-free for last 1 year). For treated and untreated patients, there was no significant difference whereas well-controlled patients presented higher values as compared to refractory patients. Meta-analysis was performed for the time-domain, frequency-domain, and nonlinear parameters. Untreated patients in comparison with controls presented significantly lower HF (high-frequency) and LF (low-frequency) values. These LF (g = − 0.9;95% CI − 1.48 to − 0.37) and HF (g = − 0.69;95% confidence interval (CI) − 1.24 to − 0.16) values were affirming suppressed both, vagal and sympathetic activity, respectively. Cyber security is dynamic as defenders often need to adapt their defense postures. The state-ofthe-art is that the adaptation of network defense is done manually(i.e., tedious and error-prone). The ideal solution is to automate adaptive network defense, which is however a difficult problem. As a first step towards automation, we propose investigating how to attain semi-automated adaptive network defense(SAND). We propose an approach extending the architecture of software-defined networking, which is centered on providing defenders with the capability to program the generation and deployment of dynamic defense rules enforced by network defense tools. We present the design and implementation of SAND, as well as the evaluation of the prototype implementation. Experimental results show that SAND can achieve agile and effective dynamic adaptations of defense rules(less than 15 ms on average for each operation), while only incurring a small performance overhead.

In order to provide more comprehensive medical services and personalized health monitoring according to individual needs, Body Area Networks (BANs) have been extensively studied by many researchers. As BANs involve the transmission of personal private data, the security of the communication is of utmost importance. Unfortunately, existing encryption techniques cannot be directly applied with the limited power or computation ability of the sensors in BANs. An alternative direction is to use physiological signals for key agreement. However, many of the current physiological signal-based key agreement schemes either have high overheads or are vulnerable to certain security issues. In this paper, we proposed a novel secret sharing and Bloom filter based key agreement scheme that balances overhead and security for BANs. Also, we use an approximate hash table to free ourselves from the problem of dependence on the ordering of features, which has been neglected by previous researchers. We validate the security of our scheme with based on real datasets and compare overheads with other solutions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Federated Learning (FL) has significant potential to protect data privacy and mitigate network burden in mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. However, due to the system and data heterogeneity of mobile clients (MCs), client selection and bandwidth allocation is key for achieving cost-efficient FL in MEC networks with limited bandwidth. To address these challenges, we investigate the issue of joint client selection and bandwidth allocation for reducing the cost (i.e., latency and energy consumption) of FL training. We formulate the problem and decompose it into a holistic subproblem to reduce the number of rounds and a partial subproblem to reduce the costs of FL each round. We propose a joint class-balanced client selection and bandwidth allocation (CBCSBA) framework to address the whole problem. Specifically, for the holistic subproblem, CBCSBA combines MCs into groups, each having data distribution as close as possible to class-balanced distribution;For the partial subproblem, CBCSBA reduces costs by exploratively selecting a group and sequentially optimizing the latency and energy consumption of MCs within the group. Experimental results show that CBCSBA outperforms the baseline frameworks in reducing latency by 28.2% and energy consumption by 25.3% on average in the considered four datasets. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Benchmarking LLMs on the Semantic Overlap Summarization Task

Semantic Overlap Summarization (SOS) is a constrained multi-document summarization task, where the constraint is to capture the common/overlapping information between two alternative narratives. While recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved superior performance in numerous summarization tasks, a benchmarking study of the SOS task using LLMs is yet to be performed. As LLMs’ responses are sensitive to slight variations in prompt design, a major challenge in conducting such a benchmarking study is to systematically explore a variety of prompts before drawing a reliable conclusion. Fortunately, very recently, the TELeR taxonomy has been proposed which can be used to design and explore various prompts for LLMs. Using this TELeR taxonomy and 15 popular LLMs, this paper comprehensively evaluates LLMs on the SOS Task, assessing their ability to summarize overlapping information from multiple alternative narratives. For evaluation, we report well-established metrics like ROUGE, BERTscore, and SEM-F1 on two different datasets of alternative narratives.
