PEFN: A Patches Enhancement and Hierarchical Fusion Network for Robust Vehicle Re-Identification

Vehicle Re-Identification (Re-ID), which is a significant application in the Internet of Things, aims to accurately retrieve the remaining images of a given vehicle across different cameras views. The improvement in vehicle Re-ID performance largely stems from better addressing the issues of inter-class similarity and intra-class variance. Existing methods, relying solely on max or average pooling after using attention modules, fail to obtain significantly complete and pure global and local features, and neglect the false guidance that some unique individual information on images bring to re-identification. Moreover, models combining global and local features have shown good results in vehicle Re-ID, but these successes neglect the interaction between features across different convolutional layers, resulting in the loss of crucial details for vehicle Re-ID. To tackle these issues, we introduce a Patches Enhancement and hierarchical Fusion Network (PEFN) based on a multi-branch architecture, divided into a Global and Local Attention Supplement (GLAS) branch, and an Enhanced Hierarchical feature fusion (EnHi) branch. The GLAS branch, through the Identity-related Feature Remodeling (IDFR) module’s staged supplementation of spatial and channel features, has achieved the enhancement of both global and local features and effectively mitigated the negative impacts of individual information. The EnHi branch enhances the robustness of feature representation by interacting hierarchical features. Extensive experiments on two large-scale vehicle re-identification datasets demonstrate that our PEFN method outperforms state-of-the-art vehicle re-identification approaches. Specifically, without utilizing extra data and re-ranking, our model achieves 85.15% mAP on the VeRi776 dataset. © 2014 IEEE.

OldVisOnline: Curating a dataset of Historical Visualizations

With the increasing adoption of digitization, more and more historical visualizations created hundreds of years ago are accessible in digital libraries online. It provides a unique opportunity for visualization and history research. Meanwhile, there is no large-scale digital collection dedicated to historical visualizations. The visualizations are scattered in various collections, which hinders retrieval. In this study, we curate the first large-scale dataset dedicated to historical visualizations. Our dataset comprises 13K historical visualization images with corresponding processed metadata from seven digital libraries. In curating the dataset, we propose a workflow to scrape and process heterogeneous metadata. We develop a semi-automatic labeling approach to distinguish visualizations from other artifacts. Our dataset can be accessed with OldVisOnline, a system we have built to browse and label historical visualizations. We discuss our vision of usage scenarios and research opportunities with our dataset, such as textual criticism for historical visualizations. Outlier detection refers to the identification of anomalous samples that deviate significantly from the distribution of normal data and has been extensively studied and used in a variety of practical tasks. However, most unsupervised outlier detection methods are carefully designed to detect specified outliers, while real-world data may be entangled with different types of outliers. In this study, we propose a fuzzy rough sets-based multi-scale outlier detection method to identify various types of outliers. Specifically, a novel fuzzy rough sets-based method that integrates relative fuzzy granule density is first introduced to improve the capability of detecting local outliers. Then, a multi-scale view generation method based on granular-ball computing is proposed to collaboratively identify group outliers at different levels of granularity. Moreover, reliable outliers and inliers determined by the three-way decision are used to train a weighted support vector machine to further improve the performance of outlier detection. The proposed method innovatively transforms unsupervised outlier detection into a semi-supervised classification problem and for the first time explores the fuzzy rough sets-based outlier detection from the perspective of multi-scale granular balls, allowing for high adaptability to different types of outliers. Extensive experiments carried out on both artificial and UCI datasets demonstrate that the proposed outlier detection method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, improving the results by at least 8.48% in terms of the Area Under the ROC Curve (AUROC) index. Speaker individuality information is among the most critical elements within speech signals. By thoroughly and accurately modeling this information, it can be utilized in various intelligent speech applications, such as speaker recognition, speaker diarization, speech synthesis, and target speaker extraction. In this overview, we present a comprehensive review of neural approaches to speaker representation learning from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Theoretically, we discuss speaker encoders ranging from supervised to self-supervised learning algorithms, standalone models to large pretrained models, pure speaker embedding learning to joint optimization with downstream tasks, and efforts toward interpretability. Practically, we systematically examine approaches for robustness and effectiveness, introduce and compare various open-source toolkits in the field. Through the systematic and comprehensive review of the relevant literature, research activities, and resources, we provide a clear reference for researchers in the speaker characterization and modeling field, as well as for those who wish to apply speaker modeling techniques to specific downstream tasks. Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising approach for privacy-preserving model training across decentralized devices. However, it faces challenges such as statistical heterogeneity and susceptibility to adversarial attacks, which can impact model robustness and fairness. Personalized FL attempts to provide some relief by customizing models for individual clients. However, it falls short in addressing server-side aggregation vulnerabilities. We introduce a novel method called FedAA, which optimizes client contributions via Adaptive Aggregation to enhance model robustness against malicious clients and ensure fairness across participants in non-identically distributed settings. To achieve this goal, we propose an approach involving a Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient-based algorithm for continuous control of aggregation weights, an innovative client selection method based on model parameter distances, and a reward mechanism guided by validation set performance. Empirically, extensive experiments demonstrate that, in terms of robustness, FedAA outperforms the state-of-the-art methods, while maintaining comparable levels of fairness, offering a promising solution to build resilient and fair federated systems. Enhancing Encrypted Internet Traffic Classification Through Advanced data Augmentation Techniques

The increasing popularity of online services has made Internet Traffic Classification a critical field of study. However, the rapid development of internet protocols and encryption limits usable data availability. This paper addresses the challenges of classifying encrypted internet traffic, focusing on the scarcity of open-source datasets and limitations of existing ones. We propose two data Augmentation (DA) techniques to synthetically generate data based on real samples: Average augmentation and MTU augmentation. Both augmentations are aimed to improve the performance of the classifier, each from a different perspective: The Average augmentation aims to increase dataset size by generating new synthetic samples, while the MTU augmentation enhances classifier robustness to varying Maximum Transmission Units (MTUs). Our experiments, conducted on two well-known academic datasets and a commercial dataset, demonstrate the effectiveness of these approaches in improving model performance and mitigating constraints associated with limited and homogeneous datasets. Our findings underscore the potential of data augmentation in addressing the challenges of modern internet traffic classification. Specifically, we show that our augmentation techniques significantly enhance encrypted traffic classification models. This improvement can positively impact user Quality of Experience (QoE) by more accurately classifying traffic as video streaming (e.g., YouTube) or chat (e.g., Google Chat). WTDUN: Wavelet Tree-Structured Sampling and Deep Unfolding Network for Image Compressed Sensing

Deep unfolding networks have gained increasing attention in the field of compressed sensing (CS) owing to their theoretical interpretability and superior reconstruction performance. However, most existing deep unfolding methods often face the following issues: 1) they learn directly from single-channel images, leading to a simple feature representation that does not fully capture complex features;and 2) they treat various image components uniformly, ignoring the characteristics of different components. To address these issues, we propose a novel wavelet-domain deep unfolding framework named WTDUN, which operates directly on the multi-scale wavelet subbands. Our method utilizes the intrinsic sparsity and multi-scale structure of wavelet coefficients to achieve a tree-structured sampling and reconstruction, effectively capturing and highlighting the most important features within images. Specifically, the design of tree-structured reconstruction aims to capture the inter-dependencies among the multi-scale subbands, enabling the identification of both fine and coarse features, which can lead to a marked improvement in reconstruction quality. Furthermore, a wavelet domain adaptive sampling method is proposed to greatly improve the sampling capability, which is realized by assigning measurements to each wavelet subband based on its importance. Unlike pure deep learning methods that treat all components uniformly, our method introduces a targeted focus on important subbands, considering their energy and sparsity. This targeted strategy lets us capture key information more efficiently while discarding less important information, resulting in a more effective and detailed reconstruction. Medical report generation is crucial for clinical diagnosis and patient management, summarizing diagnoses and recommendations based on medical imaging. However, existing work often overlook the clinical pipeline involved in report writing, where physicians typically conduct an initial quick review followed by a detailed examination. Moreover, current alignment methods may lead to misaligned relationships. To address these issues, we propose DAMPER, a dual-stage framework for medical report generation that mimics the clinical pipeline of report writing in two stages. In the first stage, a MeSH-Guided Coarse-Grained Alignment (MCG) stage that aligns chest X-ray (CXR) image features with medical subject headings (MeSH) features to generate a rough keyphrase representation of the overall impression. In the second stage, a Hypergraph-Enhanced Fine-Grained Alignment (HFG) stage that constructs hypergraphs for image patches and report annotations, modeling high-order relationships within each modality and performing hypergraph matching to capture semantic correlations between image regions and textual phrases. Finally,the coarse-grained visual features, generated MeSH representations, and visual hypergraph features are fed into a report decoder to produce the final medical report. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DAMPER in generating comprehensive and accurate medical reports, outperforming state-of-the-art methods across various evaluation metrics. The analysis of express trajectory is essential for delivery service optimization and courier management. Express trajectory consists of a large amount of community paths which is different from the trajectory of transportation tools such as taxis which run in the main road of a city. Due to the complexity of the community road networks and the energy constraint of devices, trajectories are collected under a low sampling rate and accuracy. These trajectories need to be recovered and mapped to the road networks for further analysis. Current recovery approaches utilize two-stage or end-to-end models to generate the upsampled trajectories. These methods fail to fully exploit the periodicity relation in historical data, which leads to accuracy losses for complex community road networks. In this paper, we design PATR, a periodicity-aware Seq2Seq model, to recover the couriers' trajectories by leveraging the periodical patterns of the historical data. We conduct experimental evaluations based on real-world GPS data of JD logistics consisting of 836,959 points and 25,726 road segments, and our model outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines by reducing recovery error by 2.4%-21.9%.

In recent years, the refinements in industrial processes and the increasing complexity of managing privacy-sensitive data in Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices have highlighted the need for secure, robust, and adaptive data management solutions. In this work, we propose a smart contract-assisted access control scheme for IIoT, which employs the Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) model to set access permissions for different industrial components. Besides, we defined a storage model and data format for private data by designing and deploying smart contracts to manage system operations and access policies. In addition, the bloom filter component is deployed to optimize the efficiency of contract management and system performance. Experimental results show that in real-world simulations, Hyper-IIoT demonstrates excellent contract execution time control, stable system throughput, and rapid consensus processes that are capable of handling high throughput and efficient consensus in distributed systems, even in large-scale request scenarios. © 2016 IEEE.
