Accurate and automated segmentation of intervertebral discs (IVDs) in medical images is crucial for assessing spine-related disorders, such as osteoporosis, vertebral fractures, or IVD herniation. We present HCA-Net, a novel contextual attention network architecture for semantic labeling of IVDs, with a special focus on exploiting prior geometric information. Our approach excels at processing features across different scales and effectively consolidating them to capture the intricate spatial relationships within the spinal cord. To achieve this, HCA-Net models IVD labeling as a pose estimation problem, aiming to minimize the discrepancy between each predicted IVD location and its corresponding actual joint location. In addition, we introduce a skeletal loss term to reinforce the model’s geometric dependence on the spine. This loss function is designed to constrain the model’s predictions to a range that matches the general structure of the human vertebral skeleton. As a result, the network learns to reduce the occurrence of false predictions and adaptively improves the accuracy of IVD location estimation. Through extensive experimental evaluation on multi-center spine datasets, our approach consistently outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods on both MRI T1w and T2w modalities. The use of group classifiers on similar features has resulted in computationally expensive and tedious, making them unsuitable for online applications. The clustering techniques are evaluated for both inter-subject and intra-subject variations, and it is discovered that intra-subject order execution is superior. Another approach to dealing with object recognition from medical images is considered. This is known as similarity matching, and it is a computationally simple process as compared to costly and complex characterization computations. The major challenges that occur in the image processing are high noise levels, limited image resolution, and geometric deformations throughout the image.

In Edge Computing (EC), containers have been increasingly used to deploy applications to provide mobile users services. Each container must run based on a container image file that exists locally. However, it has been conspicuously neglected by existing work that effective task scheduling combined with dynamic container image caching is a promising way to reduce the container image download time with the limited bandwidth resource of edge nodes. To fill in such gaps, in this paper, we propose novel joint Task Scheduling and Image Caching (TSIC) algorithms, specifically: 1) We consider the joint task scheduling and image caching problem and formulate it as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), taking the communication delay, waiting delay, and computation delay into consideration; 2) To solve the MDP problem, a TSIC algorithm based on deep reinforcement learning is proposed with the customized state and action spaces and combined with an adaptive caching update algorithm. 3) A real container system is implemented to validate our algorithms. The experiments show that our strategy outperforms the existing baseline approaches by 23% and 35% on average in terms of total delay and waiting delay, respectively.

Animal pose estimation is often constrained by the scarcity of annotations and the diversity of scenarios and species. The pseudo-label generation based unsupervised domain adaptation paradigm, which discriminates the predicted keypoints of unlabeled data based on the skeleton position consistency, has demonstrated effectiveness for such problems. However, existing methods generate pseudo-labels with massive false positives, because they cannot effectively distinguish sample pairs with the same errors. In this study, we propose a cross-domain animal pose estimation model from a novel perspective of skeleton anomaly learning. We construct a graph contrastive learning mechanism to acquire the skeleton anomaly-aware knowledge, which enables the generation of accurate pseudo-labels for target domain and imposes graph constraint on unlabeled data. And a skeleton anomaly-feedback based domain adaptation framework is designed to facilitate implicit alignment of object-specific features and joint training of cross-domain. Besides, we propose a novel rat pose dataset named UDARP-9.4K to address the gap of small-sized animal pose datasets encompassing diverse experimental scenarios. The related datasets are reviewed and evaluated in detail. Extensive experiments are conducted on UDARP-9.4K and two public datasets to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model in cross-scenarios and cross-species animal pose estimation tasks. Further analysis reveals the effectiveness of the proposed model for skeleton structure feature learning. The UDARP-9.4K dataset is available here. © 1991-2012 IEEE.

A Provable Splitting Approach for Symmetric Nonnegative Matrix Factorization

The symmetric Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF), a special but important class of the general NMF, has found numerous applications in data analysis such as various clustering tasks. Unfortunately, designing fast algorithms for the symmetric NMF is not as easy as for its nonsymmetric counterpart, since the latter admits the splitting property that allows state-of-the-art alternating-type algorithms. To overcome this issue, we first split the decision variable and transform the symmetric NMF to a penalized nonsymmetric one, paving the way for designing efficient alternating-type algorithms. We then show that solving the penalized nonsymmetric reformulation returns a solution to the original symmetric NMF. Moreover, we design a family of alternating-type algorithms and show that they all admit strong convergence guarantee: the generated sequence of iterates is convergent and converges at least sublinearly to a critical point of the original symmetric NMF. Finally, we conduct experiments on both synthetic data and real image clustering to support our theoretical results and demonstrate the performance of the alternating-type algorithms. © 2023, CC BY.

Pairwise dot product-based self-attention is key to the success of transformers which achieve state-of-the-art performance across a variety of applications in language and vision, but are costly to compute. It has been shown that most attention scores and keys in transformers are redundant and can be removed without loss of accuracy. In this paper, we develop a novel probabilistic framework for pruning attention scores and keys in transformers. We first formulate an admixture model of attention keys whose input data to be clustered are attention queries. We show that attention scores in self-attention correspond to the posterior distribution of this model when attention keys admit a uniform prior distribution. We then relax this uniform prior constraint and let the model learn these priors from data, resulting in a new Finite Admixture of Keys (FiAK). The learned priors are used for pruning away redundant attention scores and keys in the baseline transformers, improving the diversity of attention patterns that the models capture. We corroborate the efficiency of transformers pruned with FiAK on the ImageNet object classification and WikiText-103 language modeling tasks. Our experiments demonstrate that transformers pruned with FiAK yield similar or better accuracy than the baseline dense transformers while being much more efficient in terms of memory and computational cost.

Class activation mapping (CAM), a visualization technique for interpreting deep learning models, is now commonly used for weakly supervised semantic segmentation (WSSS) and object localization (WSOL). It is the weighted aggregation of the feature maps by activating the high class-relevance ones. Current CAM methods achieve it relying on the training outcomes, such as predicted scores (forward information), gradients (backward information), etc. However, when with small-scale data, unstable training may lead to less effective model outcomes and generate unreliable weights, finally resulting in incorrect activation and noisy CAM seeds. In this paper, we propose an outcome-agnostic CAM approach, called BroadCAM, for small-scale weakly supervised applications. Since broad learning system (BLS) is independent to the model learning, BroadCAM can avoid the weights being affected by the unreliable model outcomes when with small-scale data. By evaluating BroadCAM on VOC2012 (natural images) and BCSS-WSSS (medical images) for WSSS and OpenImages30k for WSOL, BroadCAM demonstrates superior performance than existing CAM methods with small-scale data (less than 5%) in different CNN architectures. It also achieves SOTA performance with large-scale training data. Extensive qualitative comparisons are conducted to demonstrate how BroadCAM activates the high class-relevance feature maps and generates reliable CAMs when with small-scale training data. © 2023, CC BY.

With the advent of Information technology, the Bioinformatics research field is becoming increasingly attractive to researchers and academicians. The recent development of various Bioinformatics toolkits has facilitated the rapid processing and analysis of vast quantities of biological data for human perception. Most studies focus on locating two connected diseases and making some observations to construct diverse gene regulatory interaction networks, a forerunner to general drug design for curing illness. For instance, Hypopharyngeal cancer is a disease that is associated with EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma. In this study, we select EGFR-mutated lung adenocarcinoma and Hypopharyngeal cancer by finding the Lung metastases in hypopharyngeal cancer. To conduct this study, we collect Mircorarray datasets from GEO (Gene Expression Omnibus), an online database controlled by NCBI. Differentially expressed genes, common genes, and hub genes between the selected two diseases are detected for the succeeding move. Our research findings have suggested common therapeutic molecules for the selected diseases based on 10 hub genes with the highest interactions according to the degree topology method and the maximum clique centrality (MCC). Our suggested therapeutic molecules will be fruitful for patients with those two diseases simultaneously. © 2024, CC BY.

We developed and validated a deep learning system (termed DeepDR Plus) in a diverse, multiethnic, multi-country dataset to predict personalized risk and time to progression of diabetic retinopathy. We show that DeepDR Plus can be integrated into the clinical workflow to promote individualized intervention strategies for the management of diabetic retinopathy.

Commit messages are natural language descriptions of code changes, which are important for software evolution such as code understanding and maintenance. However, previous methods are trained on the entire dataset without considering the fact that a portion of commit messages adhere to good practice (i.e., good-practice commits), while the rest do not. On the basis of our empirical study, we discover that training on good-practice commits significantly contributes to the commit message generation. Motivated by this finding, we propose a novel knowledge-aware denoising learning method called KADEL. Considering that good-practice commits constitute only a small proportion of the dataset, we align the remaining training samples with these good-practice commits. To achieve this, we propose a model that learns the commit knowledge by training on good-practice commits. This knowledge model enables supplementing more information for training samples that do not conform to good practice. However, since the supplementary information may contain noise or prediction errors, we propose a dynamic denoising training method. This method composes a distribution-aware confidence function and a dynamic distribution list, which enhances the effectiveness of the training process. Experimental results on the whole MCMD dataset demonstrate that our method overall achieves state-of-the-art performance compared with previous methods. © 2024, CC BY.
