Long-duration surface missions to the Moon and Mars will require bases to accommodate habitats for the astronauts, as well as indoor laboratory facilities, in-situ resource plants, power plants, and scientific/surface mobility equipment. Transporting the materials and equipment required to build the necessary habitats would be costly and difficult. However, the use of planetary resources to produce construction materials, or even as naturally found (such as lunar regolith utilized as an outer layer for radiation shielding, or regolith in bags as wall structure), could drastically reduce the upmass for habitats. The materials chosen for the habitat walls play a direct role in protection against each of the mentioned hazards. Choosing the best materials, their configuration, and the amount required is extremely difficult due to the immense size of the design region. For example a 3-layer habitat wall created from 20 possible materials all with varying thicknesses would have #number of layers(possible material types)∧(possible thicknesses) = 320∧inf possible solutions. Clearly, an optimization method is warranted for habitat wall design. Standard optimization techniques are not suitable for problems with such large search spaces. To overcome the large search regions, a habitat wall design tool using genetic algorithms has been developed. GAs use a "survival of the fittest" philosophy, where the most fit individuals are more likely to survive and reproduce, therefore transmitting their genes to the next generation. This paper focuses on finding optimal GA parameters for the habitat optimization tool. This tool is a multiobjective formulation of structural analysis, heat loss, radiation, and meteoroid protection. Some of the constraint calculations (i.e. safety factor, deflection, and heat loss) require long computation times. An important problem of machine vision is the balance among the efficiency, accuracy and computation cost. The visual system of man can keep watchfulness to the perimeter of a visual field and subtly process information emerging in the center of the visual field at the same time. This kind of requirement assignment of computation can virtually ease the demand of hardware both in quantity and complexity. Therefore designing an artificial model based on biological mechanism is an effective approach. In this paper a multi-layer neural model is designed based on the multi-scale receptive fields of ganglions in retina. The model can keep watch on the periphery part of a scene while processing the center information of the scene. And why it can balance the hardware complexity, processing precision and computational intensity is analyzed. An experiment is done to test the model's sensitivity in watchfulness keeping and its efficiency and veracity in environment sampling. This model may provide valuable inspiration in the implementation of real-time processing and the avoidance of expensive computation cost in machine vision.

Innovation on 3D shape design relies on advanced product design theory and effective design tools. The requirements for design tools mainly include collaborative performance and natural performance of interaction. In this paper, a 3D collaborative editing environment based on interactive transaction log is put forward and moreover the system architecture is presented. The collaborative mechanism is discussed and the collision detection of manipulation and application strategy during the course of multi-user concurrency editing is studied, the interactive gesture appropriate to 3D model and application methods are studied too. Finally a prototype system is built, which obtains satisfied result in practice.

Informal presentations are a lightweight means for fast and convenient communication of ideas. People communicate their ideas to others on paper and whiteboards, which afford fluid sketching of graphs, words and other expressive symbols. Unlike existing authoring tools that are designed for formal presentations, we created SketchPoint to help presenters design informal presentations via freeform sketching. In SketchPoint, presenters can quickly author presentations by sketching slide content, overall hierarchical structures and hyperlinks. To facilitate the transition from idea capture to communication, a note-taking workspace was built for accumulating ideas and sketching presentation outlines. Informal feedback showed that SketchPoint is a promising tool for idea communication. Copyright 2003 ACM.

This paper describes an approach for object-based image retrieval based on classes of objects in images. In this approach, contours of objects are extracted from images and are represented under a scheme which satisfies scale, rotation and translation invariance. Classifier learning techniques are used to classify objects in images into different classes. Image similarity calculation is performed based on class information of objects. Experimental results show that the method is effective and efficient.

In this paper we describe an implementation of some kinds of parallel genetic algorithms on the PVM,Parallel Virtual Machine, a portable parallel environment. We give details of a genetic algorithm running On many small subpopulations with an occasional identification and exchange of their useful information among subpopulations by means of message-passing functions of PVM. In this work, experiments were done to compare the parallel genetic algorithm and traditional sequential genetic algorithms.

Dr. Zhou received his master's degree and Ph.D. in computer science from Vanderbilt University in 1984 and 1987 respectively. He did his dissertation in the fields of artificial intelligence analogical reasoning and machine learning. His research interests include: classifier systems genetic algorithms learning by analogy inductive learning adaptive expert systems automated knowledge acquisition and adaption. He is also interested in data base design programming languages mental modeling and software engineering. Dr. Barry G. Silverman:is director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and a professor at the Engineering Administration Department of The George Washington University. He is also president of IntelliTek Inc. an AI consulting firm. Dr. Silverman received the B.S.E. M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a principal developer of four generic AI products as well as eight AI applications. Since 1979 he has written over 100 papers and reports on these AI efforts. Joel Simkol:is a research scientist currently engaged in designing expert system architectures to support electronic warfare vulnerability analyses threat assessments shipboard topside antenna arrangements and C3countermeasures employment. Mr. Simkol's work in applying expert systems technology to electromagnetic interference and to spectrum management has generated increased interest and participation from all branches of government agencies.

This paper describes a modularized AI system being built to help improve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) among shipboard topside equipment and their associated systems. CLEER is intended to act as an easy to use integrator of existing expert knowledge and pre-existing data bases and large scale analytical models. Due to these interfaces; to the need for portability of the software; and to artificial intelligence related design requirements (such as the need for spatial reasoning, expert data base management, model base management, track-based reasoning, and analogical (similar ship) reasoning) it was realized that traditional expert system shells would be inappropriate, although relatively off-the-shelf AI technology could be incorporated. In the same vein, the rapid prototyping approach to expert system design and knowledge engineering was not pursued in favor of a rigorous systems engineering methodology. The critical design decisions affecting CLEER's development are summarized in this paper along with lessons learned to date all in terms of “how,” “why,” and “when” specific features are being developed.
