Variable projection algorithms with sparse constraint for separable nonlinear models

Separable nonlinear models are widely used in various fields such as time series analysis, system modeling, and machine learning, due to their flexible structures and ability to capture nonlinear behavior of data. However, identifying the parameters of these models is challenging, especially when sparse models with better interpretability are desired by practitioners. Previous theoretical and practical studies have shown that variable projection (VP) is an efficient method for identifying separable nonlinear models, but these are based on \(L_2\) penalty of model parameters, which cannot be directly extended to deal with sparse constraint. Based on the exploration of the structural characteristics of separable models, this paper proposes gradient-based and trust-region-based variable projection algorithms, which mainly solve two key problems: how to eliminate linear parameters under sparse constraint;and how to deal with the coupling relationship between linear and nonlinear parameters in the model. Finally, numerical experiments on synthetic data and real time series data are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Social relation reasoning in heterogeneous social networks (HSNs) should not only infer whether people are connected, but also why they know each other and what their relationship is. This task is challenging because the heterogeneous social network is non-trivial to leverage and the collected data is always noisy and incomplete, which leads that the existing rule-based and representation methods cannot efficiently and accurately reason social relations. To reason social relations in noisy and incomplete HSNs, we shift from simply inferring meta-path based social relations by rule-based methods to reasoning by social relation learning. Then, we present an inductive model named Heterogeneous Graph Variational AutoEncoders (HGVAE) towards robust social relation learning on noisy and incomplete HSN data. In HGVAE, the well-designed heterogeneous graph encoder, multi-signal decoder, and variational inference mechanism bring prominent robustness and significant performance improvement. Extensive experiments are conducted to compare our methods against a set of the most representative baseline methods. The efficiency analysis, robust analysis and ablation studies confirm the value of our proposed approach for modelling meta-path based social relations buried in various HSNs. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper investigates the multiuser communication aided by movable antenna (MA) via antenna position optimization, where the uplink transmission from multiple user terminals (UTs) each equipped with a single MA to a base station (BS) with a fixed-position antenna (FPA) array is considered. Specifically, we formulate an optimization problem for minimizing the total transmit power of UTs, subject to a minimum-achievable-rate requirement for each UT, where the positions of MAs and the transmit powers of UTs, as well as the receive combining matrix at the BS are jointly optimized. To solve this non-convex optimization problem, we first express the combining matrix of the BS and the total transmit power of UTs as a function of the MAs' position vectors, which are then optimized by using the gradient descent method in an iterative manner. Simulation results demonstrate that compared to conventional FPA systems, the proposed MA-enhanced multiple access systems can significantly decrease the total transmit power of UTs by moving antennas within small regions of several-wavelength size. © 2023 IEEE.

High-dimensional and incomplete (HDI) matrix contains many complex interactions between numerous nodes. A stochastic gradient descent (SGD)-based latent factor analysis (LFA) model is remarkably effective in extracting valuable information from an HDI matrix. However, such a model commonly encounters the problem of slow convergence because a standard SGD algorithm only considers the current learning error to compute the stochastic gradient without considering the historical and future state of the learning error. To address this critical issue, this paper innovatively proposes an ADRC-incorporated SGD (ADS) algorithm by refining the instance learning error by considering the historical and future state by following the principle of an ADRC controller. With it, an ADS-based LFA model is further achieved for fast and accurate latent factor analysis on an HDI matrix. Empirical studies on two HDI datasets demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art LFA models in terms of computational efficiency and accuracy for predicting the missing data of an HDI matrix. The design of an effective codebook is crucial for the fifth generation (5G) systems, particularly in the context of massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and millimeter wave communication. However, existing codebook design methods that rely on the instantaneous channel impulse response (CIR) face challenges in adapting to dynamic channels that undergo small-scale fading changes. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel two-stage codebook design framework based solely on the reference signal receiving power (RSRP), which provides large-scale statistical information about environment attenuation. The proposed approach involves two stages: first, the angular power spectrum (APS) is estimated through sparse Bayesian learning (SBL), which uses the statistical relationship between APS and RSRP. Second, an iterative clustering and optimization algorithm is used to determine the optimal codebook based on the estimated APS. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed codebook design framework with a smaller number of beams can adapt to localized environment well and achieves better performance than the classical DFT codebook. © 2023 IEEE.

To address the key challenge encountered in fake news detection, i.e., multimodal data is difficult to be effectively semantically represented due to its intrinsic heterogeneity, this paper proposes a multimodal knowledge representation method for fake news detection. First, visual feature extraction is performed for fake news image data, the relevant images are sliced into multiple blocks, and then visual modal features are obtained by linear projection layer mapping. This simplifies the feature extraction process and reduces the computational cost, which helps to improve the fake news recognition performance. Second, to meet the actual fake news detection needs, a long text representation method based on topic words is investigated for the text data in fake news. Finally, the multimodal representation of the same fake news data is optimized by establishing a connection between two different modalities, visual and text, and inputting it into a BiLSTM-Attention based network to achieve the fusion of multimodal features. The experiment selects the same fake news data of EANN model and uses four classical classification methods to verify the effect of knowledge representation and compare it with the fusion model ViLT which is not optimized for long text. The experiment proves that the accuracy rate of fake news detection using the multimodal representation proposed in this paper is improved by 7.4% compared to the EANN model, and by 9.3% compared to the ViLT representation.

Image domain film to sound generation (IDFSG) is a research hotspot in film industry and cross-modal learning. Existing researches neglect sound generation need for variable density film soundtrack. To solve the problem of constructing sound generation processes during variable density film soundtrack reproduction (VDFSR), we propose a PF2SG method based on the VDFSR knowledge, which can effectively achieve high-quality sound generation performance. Specifically, from the perspective of mining the intrinsic consistency of different types of signal capability transformations, we embed variable density film soundtrack reproduction knowledge into the corresponding sound generation process in stages. Moreover, to further enhance the stability of our IDFSG method, we design a sound reproduction module for variable density film soundtrack that integrates the photometric sampling interval based on the mechanical structure of the film projector. Our method effectively explores the intrinsic consistency between the image domain information and the audio domain information during VD film sound generation. Experiments have shown that our method can effectively generate higher quality audio compared to existing methods and commercial devices. © 2024 IEEE.

Questionnaire survey systems are a kind of computer-aided survey tool, which are helpful for the questionnaire publisher to collect the opinions and appeals of the respondents. Nevertheless, it is difficult for the questionnaire publisher to solve tricky questions such as respondents’ inactivity in answering questions, especially in the subjective questionnaire. The paper extends the privacy-friendly incentive protocols of Camenisch et al. based on the technique of signatures of knowledge and the Au-Susilo-Mu signature and put forward a subjective questionnaire system oriented to professional course teaching. The new system controls the range of participants by specific attributes. It also allows participants to remain anonymous at all phases, so they can truly feedback on their subjective evaluations. Moreover, when students are not within the scope of the survey, they are encouraged to help to review the collected subjective questionnaire answers. Furthermore, the new system introduces a token mechanism to stimulate students’ participation. Security analysis shows that the new system satisfies correctness, balance, anonymity, and unlinkability. © 2023 SPIE.
