In this study, we delve into an emerging optimization challenge involving a black-box objective function that can only be gauged via a ranking oracle-a situation frequently encountered in real-world scenarios, especially when the function is evaluated by human judges. Such challenge is inspired from Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF), an approach recently employed to enhance the performance of Large Language Models (LLMs) using human guidance (Ouyang et al., 2022;Liu et al., 2023;OpenAI, 2022;Bai et al., 2022). We introduce ZO-RankSGD, an innovative zeroth-order optimization algorithm designed to tackle this optimization problem, accompanied by theoretical assurances. Our algorithm utilizes a novel rank-based random estimator to determine the descent direction and guarantees convergence to a stationary point. Moreover, ZO-RankSGD is readily applicable to policy optimization problems in Reinforcement Learning (RL), particularly when only ranking oracles for the episode reward are available. Last but not least, we demonstrate the effectiveness of ZO-RankSGD in a novel application: improving the quality of images generated by a diffusion generative model with human ranking feedback. Throughout experiments, we found that ZO-RankSGD can significantly enhance the detail of generated images with only a few rounds of human feedback. Overall, our work advances the field of zeroth-order optimization by addressing the problem of optimizing functions with only ranking feedback, and offers a new and effective approach for aligning Artificial Intelligence (AI) with human intentions. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Neural networks have shown promising performance in collaborative filtering and matrix completion but the theoretical analysis is limited and there is still room for improvement in terms of the accuracy of recovering missing values. This paper presents a neuron-enhanced autoencoder matrix completion (AEMC-NE) method and applies it to collaborative filtering. Our AEMC-NE adds an element-wise autoencoder to each output of the main autoencoder to enhance the reconstruction capability. Thus it can adaptively learn an activation function for the output layer to approximate possibly complicated response functions in real data. We provide theoretical analysis for AEMC-NE as well as AEMC to investigate the generalization ability of autoencoder and deep learning in matrix completion, considering both missing completely at random and missing not at random. We show that the element-wise neural network has the potential to reduce the generalization error bound, the data sparsity can be useful, and the prediction performance is closely related to the difference between the numbers of variables and samples. The numerical results on synthetic data and five benchmark datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of AEMC-NE in comparison to many baselines. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Judgment of blast furnace iron-tapping status based on data differential processing and dynamic window analysis algorithm

Ironmaking plants hold a core position in steel production. Efficient level detection and iron-tapping status judgment can accurately measure the liquid level and predict the amount of molten iron in the ladle, thereby ensuring production safety and improving production efficiency. At present, the judgment of the start and end statuses of blast furnace iron-tapping mainly relies on manual visual inspection. However, due to the high-temperature environment on-site and interference from iron powder, gunning mud, and other dust, operators find it challenging to make accurate judgments. To address these issues, this study proposes a robust and accurate method for judging the iron-tapping status of blast furnaces. This study collected four million on-site liquid level data, underwent interpolation, noise reduction, normalization, and other preprocessing steps, and then used differential processing to calculate the iron-tapping rate. Combined with dynamic window feature analysis, it effectively captured the change characteristics of the liquid level in the ladle under different iron-tapping *** simulated on-site experiments, the method achieved a 96.6 % accuracy rate for iron-tapping status *** real-time iron-tapping status judgment method based on differential processing of liquid level data and dynamic window feature analysis proposed in this study demonstrates high precision and robustness in the complex environment of ironmaking plants. This technology not only improves the production efficiency of the iron and steel link but also frees on-site operators from the harsh working environment, eliminating human errors in judgments and omissions, further promoting the intelligent process of ironmaking plants.

An integrated energy system is a complex system that requires intelligent control to optimize its operation. This paper proposes an intelligent control method for integrated energy systems based on a low carbon model. The model integrates a variety of low carbon technologies such as carbon capture systems, demand response, carbon emissions trading, and clean energy generation. The effect of the proposed intelligent control methods on reducing system costs and carbon emissions is verified through a case study. The results show that the combination of the intelligent control method and the low carbon model leads to a significant reduction in system operating costs and carbon emissions. This provides an important reference for intelligent control of the existing integrated energy system from a low-carbon approach. © 2024 IEEE.

Rate adaptation is a mechanism critical for maximizing the throughput of 802.11 systems. In this paper, inspired by the observation that the packet success rate under different data rates is not independent, we model the rate adaptation problem as a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem with correlated arms. Two MAB-based rate adaptation algorithms are developed in which the correlation between data rates is exploited to accelerate the convergence of the algorithms. To verify the performance of our algorithms, we build up an indoor 802.11n test bed. The proposed rate adaptation algorithms are implemented and deployed on the test bed. Both simulation and test-bed experiments demonstrate the superiority of our algorithms in stationary and non-stationary radio environments. © 2023 IEEE.

Assessing data quality through Functional Depen-dencies (FDs) is a crucial aspect of data governance. However, with the diverse range of data sources and the exponential growth in data volume, exact FDs can sometimes be impractical for real-world applications. In contrast, relaxed functional dependencies (RFDs), which allows for some flexibility in attribute value comparisons, demonstrates greater adaptability and flexibility for big data scenarios. To address the efficient discovery of RFDs, this paper proposes a novel mining method to supplement the current research gaps. By establishing a difference table for tuples, we transform the problem into a specialized minimal set covering problem. Additionally, we introduce two optimization strategies: reducing the time complexity of enumerating the left-hand side of the base RFDs to 0 (1) and decreasing the search complexity for feasible LHS attributes and threshold candidates from O(2m-l) to O(1.5m-1). We rigorously proof that our mining approach guarantees the identification of validity and minimal RFDs. Experiments on nine real-world datasets reveal that our method significantly improves efficiency compared to existing techniques. Furthermore, it uncovers more concise and higher-quality RFDs. Importantly, the RFDs extracted through our methodology exhibit better performance in downstream cleaning tasks. © 2024 IEEE.
