Understanding human mobility patterns at the point-of-interest (POI) scale plays an important role in enhancing business intelligence in mobile environments. While large efforts have been made in this direction, most studies simply utilize POI check-ins to mine the concerned mobility patterns, the effectiveness of which is usually hindered due to data sparsity. To obtain better POI-based human mobility for mining, in this paper, we strive to directly annotate the POIs associated with raw user-generated mobility records. We propose a neural context fusion approach which integrates various context factors in people's POI-visiting behaviors. Our approach evaluates the preference and transition factors via representation learning. Notably, we incorporate an attention mechanism to deal with the randomized transitions in raw mobility. The domain knowledge factors, i.e., distance, time and popularity, remain effective and our approach further includes them from a data-driven perspective. Factors are automatically fused with a feed-forward neural network. Furthermore, we exploit a multi-head architecture to enhance the model expressiveness. Using two real-life data sets, we conduct our experimental study and find that our approach consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines by at least 32 percent in accuracy. Besides, we demonstrate the utility of the obtained POI-based human mobility with a POI recommendation example.

This paper presents a novel method for imputing missing data of multivariate time series by adapting the Long Short Term-Memory (LSTM) and Denoising Autoencoder (DAE). Missing data are ubiquitous in many domains;proper imputation methods can improve performance on many tasks. Our method focus on multivariate time series, applying bidirectional LSTM to learn temporal information and DAE to learn correlation between variables, and we combine these two models by using LSTM as the encoder component of DAE. Several real-world datasets, including electroencephalogram (EEG), electromyogram (EMG) and electronic health records (EHRs), are extracted to test the performance of our method. Through simulation studies, we compare the proposed recurrent denoising autoencoder with several baseline imputation methods and demonstrate its effectiveness in both missing data estimation and label prediction after imputation.

An artificial intelligence-generated content-enhanced computer-aided diagnosis (AIGC-CAD) model, designated as ThyGPT, has been developed. This model, inspired by the architecture of ChatGPT, could assist radiologists in assessing the risk of thyroid nodules through semantic-level human-machine interaction. A dataset comprising 19,165 thyroid nodule ultrasound cases from Zhejiang Cancer Hospital was assembled to facilitate the training and validation of the model. After training, ThyGPT could automatically evaluate thyroid nodule and engage in effective communication with physicians through human-computer interaction. The performance of ThyGPT was rigorously quantified using established metrics such as the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity. The empirical findings revealed that radiologists, when supplemented with ThyGPT, markedly surpassed the diagnostic acumen of their peers utilizing traditional methods as well as the performance of the model in isolation. These findings suggest that AIGC-CAD systems, exemplified by ThyGPT, hold the promise to fundamentally transform the diagnostic workflows of radiologists in forthcoming years. The binary neural network, largely saving the storage and computation, serves as a promising technique for deploying deep models on resource-limited devices. However, the binarization inevitably causes severe information loss, and even worse, its discontinuity brings difficulty to the optimization of the deep network. To address these issues, a variety of algorithms have been proposed, and achieved satisfying progress in recent years. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of these algorithms, mainly categorized into the native solutions directly conducting binarization, and the optimized ones using techniques like minimizing the quantization error, improving the network loss function, and reducing the gradient error. We also investigate other practical aspects of binary neural networks such as the hardware-friendly design and the training tricks. Then, we give the evaluation and discussions on different tasks, including image classification, object detection and semantic segmentation. Dictionary learning (DL) is powerful for representation learning, while it fails to capture the deep hierarchical information hidden in data. In this paper, we propose a new generalized end-to-end mulita-layer representation learning architecture referred to as Multi-layer Dictionary Pair Learning Network (MDPL-net) for the deep sparse and hierarchical representation of images. To enable MDPL-net to conduct accurate classification, MDPL-net clearly integrates the skip connection end-to-end network and multi-layer deep sparse dictionary learning into a unified architecture. The representation learning module has several hidden DL blocks, where each hidden DL block has a dictionary pair learning (DPL) layer, a batch-norm layer and an activation function layer, and the DL blocks are connected in a feed-forward manner. To further improve the information flow and maintain the privileged features between different DL blocks, a novel skip dense connectivity pattern is deployed between hidden DL blocks, which can obtain more stable and discriminative features. The DPL layer jointly formulates the discriminative synthesis dictionary and analysis dictionary by minimizing reconstruction error within each batch over the feature maps from front layers. Extensive results on benchmark databases demonstrate the effectiveness of MDPL-net for discriminative representation and robust image classification.

Climate change intensifies urban flood hazards, yet existing research often overlooks the complex dynamic relationships between surface deformation, soil properties, and flooding. This study uses the 2024 Guilin flood event as a case study, integrating SBAS-InSAR, DInSAR techniques, and various machine learning methods to explore the complex interactions between surface deformation, soil characteristics, and flooding. The results show that the flood caused significant water expansion, with ground subsidence mainly concentrated in the southern and eastern parts of Guilin, highly coinciding with the severely flooded areas. The flood-inundated areas exhibited opposite deformation trends before and after the flood, shifting from subsidence to uplift, while road subsidence also showed a dynamic process. Different machine learning methods showed varying performance in predicting surface deformation, with the ERT model performing relatively well. Soil thickness was positively correlated with surface subsidence within a certain range, and this relationship exhibited noticeable nonlinear characteristics post-flood. The findings of this study have important practical implications for urban flood mitigation, aiding urban planners in more accurately identifying flood-prone areas, especially those experiencing subsidence.

Poisoning attack against estimating from pairwise comparisons

As pairwise ranking becomes broadly employed for elections, sports competitions, recommendation, information retrieval and so on, attackers have strong motivation and incentives to manipulate or disrupt the ranking list. They could inject malicious comparisons into the training data to fool the target ranking algorithm. Such a technique is called "poisoning attack" in regression and classification tasks. In this paper, to the best of our knowledge, we initiate the first systematic investigation of data poisoning attack on the pairwise ranking algorithms, which can be generally formalized as the dynamic and static games between the ranker and the attacker, and can be modeled as certain kinds of integer programming problems mathematically. To break the computational hurdle of the underlying integer programming problems, we reformulate them into the distributionally robust optimization (DRO) problems, which are computational tractable. Based on such DRO formulations, we propose two efficient poisoning attack algorithms and establish the associated theoretical guarantees including the existence of Nash equilibrium and the generalization ability bounds. The effectiveness of the suggested poisoning attack strategies is demonstrated by a series of toy simulations and several real data experiments. These experimental results show that the proposed methods can significantly reduce the performance of the ranker in the sense that the correlation between the true ranking list and the aggregated results with toxic data can be decreased dramatically. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Among more than 800 known fast radio bursts (FRBs), only two, namely FRB 20121102A and FRB 20190520B, are confirmed to be associated with persistent radio sources (PRSs). Here we report evidence of apparent temporal variability in the PRS associated with the bursting FRB 20190520B based on the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations taken in 2020 and 2021. Based on the analysis of epoch-to-epoch variability of the PRS at L, S, C, and X band (1–12 GHz), we detected not only overall marginal variability but also a likely radio flux decrease (∼3.2 σ) between the observations taken in 2020 and 2021 at 3 GHz. Assuming no spectral variation in the PRS during these observations, we found the evidence for an overall broad-band radio flux decrease by about 20% between the 2020 and the 2021 observations, suggesting that the PRS probably evolves on the yearly time scale. If we attribute the marginal variability at 3 GHz as intrinsic or due to scintillation, the size of potential variable component of the PRS is constrained to be sub-parsec. On the other hand, the size of the PRS can be also constrained to 0.22 pc from the time-averaged radio spectrum and the integrated radio luminosity in the 1–12 GHz band based on equipartition and self-absorption arguments. We discuss potential origins of the PRS and suggest that an accreting compact object origin might be able to explain the PRS’s temporal and spectral properties. Confirmation of variability or flux decline of the PRS would be critical to our understanding of the PRS and its relation to the bursting source. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
