In July 2023,the center of Excellence in Respiratory Pathogens organized a two-day workshop on infectious diseases modelling and the lessons learnt from the Covid-19 *** report summarizes the rich discussions that occurred during the *** workshop participants discussed multisource data integration and highlighted the benefits of combining traditional surveillance with more novel data sources like mobility data,social media,and wastewater *** advancements were noted in the development of predictive models,with examples from various countries showcasing the use of machine learning and artificial intelligence in detecting and monitoring disease *** role of open collaboration between various stakeholders in modelling was stressed,advocating for the continuation of such partnerships beyond the pandemic.A major gap identified was the absence of a common international framework for data sharing,which is crucial for global pandemic ***,the workshop underscored the need for robust,adaptable modelling frameworks and the integration of different data sources and collaboration across sectors,as key elements in enhancing future pandemic response and preparedness.

Network function virtualization is a promising technology to simultaneously support multiple services with diverse characteristics and requirements in the 5G and beyond networks. In particular, each service consists of a predetermined sequence of functions, called service function chain (SFC), running on a cloud environment. To make different service slices work properly in harmony, it is crucial to appropriately select the cloud nodes to deploy the functions in the SFC and flexibly route the flow of the services such that these functions are processed in the order defined in the corresponding SFC, the end-to-end (E2E) latency constraints of all services are guaranteed, and all cloud and communication resource budget constraints are respected. In this paper, we first propose a new mixed binary linear program (MBLP) formulation of the above network slicing problem that optimizes the system energy efficiency while jointly considers the E2E latency requirement, resource budget, flow routing, and functional instantiation. Then, we develop another MBLP formulation and show that the two formulations are equivalent in the sense that they share the same optimal solution. However, since the numbers of variables and constraints in the second problem formulation are significantly smaller than those in the first one, solving the second problem formulation is more computationally efficient especially when the dimension of the corresponding network is large. Numerical results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed formulations compared with the existing ones. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Method for extracting patterns of coordinated network attacks on electric power CPS based on temporal-topological correlation

In the analysis of coordinated network attacks on electric power cyber-physical system (CPS), it is difficult to restore the complete attack path, and the intent of the attack cannot be identified automatically. A method is therefore proposed for the extracting patterns of coordinated network attacks on electric power CPS based on temporal-topological correlation. First, the attack events are aggregated according to the alarm log of the cyber space, and a temporal-causal Bayesian network-based cyber attack recognition algorithm is proposed to parse out the cyber attack sequences of the same attacker. Then, according to the characteristic curves of different attack measurement data in physical space, a combination of physical attack event criteria algorithm is designed to distinguish the types of physical attack events. Finally, physical attack events and cyber attack sequences are matched via temporal-topological correlation, frequent patterns of attack sequences are extracted, and hidden multi-step attack patterns are found from scattered grid measurement data and information from alarm logs. Modern bookcrossing leverages the mobile networks to help readers share books via convenient connection, and thus expedites the dissemination of information. However, the lack of traceability has significantly hindered the wide adoption of mobile bookcrossing, leading to loss of books. Meanwhile, the managerial inefficiency of current mobile bookcrossing systems becomes another obstacle for advancing the book circulation. To overcome these problems, we propose to leverage the promising blockchain technology with the merits of its immutability and cryptographic smart contract. In this paper, we present BookChain, a traceable and efficient blockchain-based innercampus book sharing system. BookChain stores the complete sharing data of an interested book permanently on blockchain, such that every reader can trace the borrowing history, which reduces the potential for loss of book. BookChain also introduces the use of smart contract to automate the circulation of books with minimal human intervention, resulting in the improvement of efficiency. The experimental results show the effectiveness and low-cost of the proposed system under high concurrent users.

Fingerprinting-based indoor localization via WiFi has achieved a great breakthrough in the past decade. However, it suffers from an inherent problem that the localization accuracy declines sharply over time due to the dynamic environment and unstable WiFi devices. researchers have designed many methods to update the localization model, e.g., crowdsourcing-based model updating, in order to maintain the localization accuracy. Unfortunately, they have not taken the privacy into consideration during the updating process. This will lead to a threat that the eavesdroppers could guess the location providers' private information according to the updating model. For the goal of maintaining the localization accuracy without the risk of privacy breaching, we proposed FLoc, a fingerprinting-based indoor localization system which updates the localization model via a federated learning framework. In FLoc, every provider maintains a local localization model in their own device. They will regularly encrypt the updating parameters and share them to a common model server. At the model server, it aggregates the encrypted information of the local models to maintain a general model, which will be sent back to the local devices for next updating iteration. We evaluate FLoc in an APs unknown laboratory corridor. The experiment results show that FLoc has a comparable localization performance. Moreover, it can successfully protect the providers' privacy, since the information transferred is all encrypted.

Non-uniform memory access (NUMA) architectures feature asymmetrical memory access latencies on different CPU nodes. Hybrid memory systems composed of non-volatile memory (NVM) and DRAM further diversify memory access latencies due to the relatively large performance gap between NVM and DRAM. Traditional NUMA memory management policies fail to manage hybrid memories effectively and may even hurt application performance. In this paper, we present HiNUMA, a new NUMA abstraction for memory allocation and migration in hybrid memory systems. HiNUMA advocates NUMA topologyaware hybrid memory allocation policies for the initial data placement. HiNUMA also proposes a new NUMA balancing mechanism called HANB for memory migration at runtime. HANB considers both data access frequency and memory bandwidth utilization to reduce the cost of memory accesses in hybrid memory systems. We evaluate the performance of HiNUMA with several typical workloads. Experimental results show that HiNUMA can effectively utilize hybrid memories, and deliver much higher application performance than conventional NUMA memory management policies and other state-of-the-art work.

Context. The mass of galaxy clusters estimated from weak-lensing observations is affected by projection effects, leading to a systematic underestimation compared to the true cluster mass. This bias varies with both mass and redshift. Additionally, the magnitude of this bias depends on the criteria used to select clusters and the spatial scale over which their mass is measured. In this work, we leverage state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters carried out with GadgetX and GIZMO-SIMBA as part of the Three Hundred project. We used them to quantify weak-lensing mass biases with respect also to the results from dark matter-only simulations. We also investigate how the biases of the weak-lensing mass estimates propagate into the richness-mass relation. Aims. We aim to shed light on the effect of the presence of baryons on the weak-lensing mass bias and also whether this bias depends on the galaxy formation recipe;in addition, we seek to model the richness-mass relation that can be used as guidelines for observational experiments for cluster cosmology. Methods. We produced weak-lensing simulations of random projections to model the expected excess surface mass density profile of clusters up to redshift z = 1. We then estimated the observed richness by counting the number of galaxies in a cylinder with a radius equal to the cluster radius and correcting by large-scale projected contaminants. We adopted a Bayesian analysis to infer the weak lensing cluster mass and concentration. Results. We derived the weak-lensing mass-richness relation and found consistency within 1σ uncertainties across hydrodynamical simulations. The intercept parameter of the relation is independent of redshift but varies with the minimum of the stellar mass used to define the richness value. At the same time, the slope is described by a second-order polynomial in redshift, which is relatively constant up to z = 0.55. The scatter in observed richness at a fixed weak-lensing mass,

Unsupervised neural machine translation with SMT as posterior regularization

Without real bilingual corpus available, unsupervised Neural Machine Translation (NMT) typically requires pseudo parallel data generated with the back-translation method for the model training. However, due to weak supervision, the pseudo data inevitably contain noises and errors that will be accumulated and reinforced in the subsequent training process, leading to bad translation performance. To address this issue, we introduce phrase based Statistic Machine Translation (SMT) models which are robust to noisy data, as posterior regularizations to guide the training of unsupervised NMT models in the iterative back-translation process. Our method starts from SMT models built with pre-trained language models and word-level translation tables inferred from cross-lingual embeddings. Then SMT and NMT models are optimized jointly and boost each other incrementally in a unified EM framework. In this way, (1) the negative effect caused by errors in the iterative back-translation process can be alleviated timely by SMT filtering noises from its phrase tables;meanwhile, (2) NMT can compensate for the deficiency of fluency inherent in SMT. Experiments conducted on en-fr and en-de translation tasks show that our method outperforms the strong baseline and achieves new state-of-the-art unsupervised machine translation performance.
