The video grounding (VG) task aims to locate the queried action or event in an untrimmed video based on rich linguistic descriptions. Existing proposal-free methods are trapped in complex interaction between video and query, overemphasizing cross-modal feature fusion and feature correlation for VG. In this paper, we propose a novel boundary regression paradigm that performs regression token learning in a transformer. Particularly, we present a simple but effective proposal-free framework, namely Video Grounding Transformer (ViGT), which predicts the temporal boundary using a learnable regression token rather than multi-modal or cross-modal features. In ViGT, the benefits of a learnable token are manifested as follows. (1) The token is unrelated to the video or the query and avoids data bias toward the original video and query. (2) The token simultaneously performs global context aggregation from video and query features. First, we employed a sharing feature encoder to project both video and query into a joint feature space before performing cross-modal co-attention (i.e., video-to-query attention and query-to-video attention) to highlight discriminative features in each modality. Furthermore, we concatenated a learnable regression token [REG] with the video and query features as the input of a vision-language transformer. Finally, we utilized the token [REG] to predict the target moment and visual features to constrain the foreground and background probabilities at each timestamp. The proposed ViGT performed well on three public datasets: ANet Captions, TACoS and YouCookII. Extensive ablation studies and qualitative analysis further validated the interpretability of ViGT. In formal concept analysis, attribute exploration is a very important methodology, which can explore the logical laws between attributes in a continuous and interactive way. Object-oriented exploration is very meaningful while it is similar to attribute exploration. It can explore the implication relationship between objects. But for the existing work, almost all are attribute exploration, object-oriented exploration is rare. Research on object-oriented exploration has great practical value, such as object classification, retrieval and excavation. In order to address this problem, this article takes the object as the main research point in formal concept analysis based on related knowledge of traditional attribute exploration, and proposes theories of object-oriented exploration. According to these related theories and the framework of attribute exploration algorithm, an object-oriented exploration algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm can be used to explore and understand the relationship between objects, which facilitates to understand better the relationship between objects and attributes.

Object detection, a quintessential task in the realm of perceptual computing, can be tackled using a generative methodology. In the present study, we introduce a novel framework designed to articulate object detection as a denoising diffusion process, which operates on the perturbed bounding boxes of annotated entities. This framework, termed ConsistencyDet, leverages an innovative denoising concept known as the Consistency Model. The hallmark of this model is its self-consistency feature, which empowers the model to map distorted information from any temporal stage back to its pristine state, thereby realizing a "one-step denoising" mechanism. Such an attribute markedly elevates the operational efficiency of the model, setting it apart from the conventional Diffusion Model. Throughout the training phase, ConsistencyDet initiates the diffusion sequence with noise-infused boxes derived from the ground-truth annotations and conditions the model to perform the denoising task. Subsequently, in the inference stage, the model employs a denoising sampling strategy that commences with bounding boxes randomly sampled from a normal distribution. Through iterative refinement, the model transforms an assortment of arbitrarily generated boxes into definitive detections. Comprehensive evaluations employing standard benchmarks, such as MS-COCO and LVIS, corroborate that ConsistencyDet surpasses other leading-edge detectors in performance metrics. With the rapid development of e-Commerce and takeaway platforms, retailers have gradually developed multi-channel operations. However, limited empirical studies explored the effects of an online channel offered by takeaway platforms on the store performance. Does an online channel addition have a synergy effect or a cannibalization effect on store performance? We empirically investigate these effects by analyzing a large dataset including diverse samples collected from multiple retailers across various regions. The dataset includes 2115 stores across 25 retailers for 10 months that includes two types of retail formats and covers 16 provinces and 21 cities of China. We study the impacts of the newly introduced online channel on the incumbent offline channel and the overall store *** empirical results reveal that the online channel addition mainly has a synergy effect. Specifically,for the overall store, it has a positive effect on the sales and product variety, whereas it has a negative effect on the basket size. Surprisingly, an online channel addition also has a positive effect on the offline sales. Our study adds novel values to multi-channel retailing literature by empirically researching the cannibalization and synergy effect of a new type of online channel, offered by takeaway platforms. It can provide insights for retail enterprises who are interested in introducing O2 O model.

An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI’s GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs’ information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs’ human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. Rich experiments show our methods’ effectiveness and some of their remaining issues in improving GPT-4’s information extraction ability. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

ReconBoost: Boosting Can Achieve Modality Reconcilement

This paper explores a novel multi-modal alternating learning paradigm pursuing a reconciliation between the exploitation of uni-modal features and the exploration of cross-modal interactions. This is motivated by the fact that current paradigms of multi-modal learning tend to explore multi-modal features simultaneously. The resulting gradient prohibits further exploitation of the features in the weak modality, leading to modality competition, where the dominant modality overpowers the learning process. To address this issue, we study the modality-alternating learning paradigm to achieve reconcilement. Specifically, we propose a new method called ReconBoost to update a fixed modality each time. Herein, the learning objective is dynamically adjusted with a reconcilement regularization against competition with the historical models. By choosing a KL-based reconcilement, we show that the proposed method resembles Friedman's Gradient-Boosting (GB) algorithm, where the updated learner can correct errors made by others and help enhance the overall performance. The major difference with the classic GB is that we only preserve the newest model for each modality to avoid overfitting caused by ensembling strong learners. Furthermore, we propose a memory consolidation scheme and a global rectification scheme to make this strategy more effective. To obtain lower inference latency and less memory footprint of deep neural networks, model quantization has been widely employed in deep model deployment, by converting the floating points to low-precision integers. However, previous methods (such as quantization aware training and post training quantization) require original data for the fine-tuning or calibration of quantized model, which makes them inapplicable to the cases that original data are not accessed due to privacy or security. This gives birth to the data-free quantization method with synthetic data generation. While current data-free quantization methods still suffer from severe performance degradation when quantizing a model into lower bit, caused by the low inter-class separability of semantic features. To this end, we propose a new and effective data-free quantization method termed ClusterQ, which utilizes the feature distribution alignment for synthetic data generation. To obtain high inter-class separability of semantic features, we cluster and align the feature distribution statistics to imitate the distribution of real data, so that the performance degradation is alleviated. Moreover, we incorporate the diversity enhancement to solve class-wise mode collapse. We also employ the exponential moving average to update the centroid of each cluster for further feature distribution improvement. Extensive experiments based on different deep models (e.g., ResNet-18 and MobileNet-V2) over the ImageNet dataset demonstrate that our proposed ClusterQ model obtains state-of-the-art performance.

Topic shift detection aims to identify whether there is a change in the current topic of conversation or if a change is needed. The study found previous work did not evaluate the performance of large language models like ChatGPT on the task of topic shift. Therefore, this paper's main task and innovation lie in analyzing ChatGPT's performance on topic shift detection. To provide a more comprehensive evaluation, we conducted topic shift detection tasks on ChatGPT from three aspects: single utterances, adjacent utterances, and contextual levels. Additionally, to gauge the performance of large language models, we conducted experiments on multiple small-scale models and compared the results of the two models. Experimental results on the publicly available English TIAGE dataset showed that small-scale models exhibited lower recall in all three aspects, while ChatGPT performed better in the recall. This suggests that compared to small-scale models, large models are more capable of accurately detecting topic shifts. However, large models also exhibited lower precision, indicating that while ChatGPT can recognize content differences in utterances, its judgment on whether these different contents belong to the same topic is poor.

ADA-GAD: Anomaly-Denoised Autoencoders for Graph Anomaly Detection

Graph anomaly detection is crucial for identifying nodes that deviate from regular behavior within graphs, benefiting various domains such as fraud detection and social network. Although existing reconstruction-based methods have achieved considerable success, they may face the Anomaly Overfitting and Homophily Trap problems caused by the abnormal patterns in the graph, breaking the assumption that normal nodes are often better reconstructed than abnormal ones. Our observations indicate that models trained on graphs with fewer anomalies exhibit higher detection performance. Based on this insight, we introduce a novel two-stage framework called Anomaly-Denoised Autoencoders for Graph Anomaly Detection (ADA-GAD). In the first stage, we design a learning-free anomaly-denoised augmentation method to generate graphs with reduced anomaly levels. We pretrain graph autoencoders on these augmented graphs at multiple levels, which enables the graph autoencoders to capture normal patterns. In the next stage, the decoders are retrained for detection on the original graph, benefiting from the multi-level representations learned in the previous stage. Meanwhile, we propose the node anomaly distribution regularization to further alleviate Anomaly Overfitting. We validate the effectiveness of our approach through extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Not All Diffusion Model Activations Have Been Evaluated as Discriminative Features

Diffusion models are initially designed for image generation. Recent research shows that the internal signals within their backbones, named activations, can also serve as dense features for various discriminative tasks such as semantic segmentation. Given numerous activations, selecting a small yet effective subset poses a fundamental problem. To this end, the early study of this field performs a large-scale quantitative comparison of the discriminative ability of the activations. However, we find that many potential activations have not been evaluated, such as the queries and keys used to compute attention scores. Moreover, recent advancements in diffusion architectures bring many new activations, such as those within embedded ViT modules. Both combined, activation selection remains unresolved but overlooked. To tackle this issue, this paper takes a further step with a much broader range of activations evaluated. Considering the significant increase in activations, a full-scale quantitative comparison is no longer operational. Instead, we seek to understand the properties of these activations, such that the activations that are clearly inferior can be filtered out in advance via simple qualitative evaluation. After careful analysis, we discover three properties universal among diffusion models, enabling this study to go beyond specific models. On top of this, we present effective feature selection solutions for several popular diffusion models. Finally, the experiments across multiple discriminative tasks validate the superiority of our method over the SOTA competitors. Our code is available at this url. © 2024, CC BY.
