PEFN: A Patches Enhancement and Hierarchical Fusion Network for Robust Vehicle Re-Identification

Vehicle Re-Identification (Re-ID), which is a significant application in the Internet of Things, aims to accurately retrieve the remaining images of a given vehicle across different cameras views. The improvement in vehicle Re-ID performance largely stems from better addressing the issues of inter-class similarity and intra-class variance. Existing methods, relying solely on max or average pooling after using attention modules, fail to obtain significantly complete and pure global and local features, and neglect the false guidance that some unique individual information on images bring to re-identification. Moreover, models combining global and local features have shown good results in vehicle Re-ID, but these successes neglect the interaction between features across different convolutional layers, resulting in the loss of crucial details for vehicle Re-ID. To tackle these issues, we introduce a Patches Enhancement and hierarchical Fusion Network (PEFN) based on a multi-branch architecture, divided into a Global and Local Attention Supplement (GLAS) branch, and an Enhanced Hierarchical feature fusion (EnHi) branch. The GLAS branch, through the Identity-related Feature Remodeling (IDFR) module’s staged supplementation of spatial and channel features, has achieved the enhancement of both global and local features and effectively mitigated the negative impacts of individual information. The EnHi branch enhances the robustness of feature representation by interacting hierarchical features. Extensive experiments on two large-scale vehicle re-identification datasets demonstrate that our PEFN method outperforms state-of-the-art vehicle re-identification approaches. Specifically, without utilizing extra data and re-ranking, our model achieves 85.15% mAP on the VeRi776 dataset. © 2014 IEEE.

Cross-domain few-shot hyperspectral image classification focuses on learning prior knowledge from a large number of labeled samples from source domains and then transferring the knowledge to the tasks which contain few labeled samples in target domains. Following the metric-based manner, many current methods first extract the features of the query and support samples, and then directly predict the classes of query samples according to their distance to the support samples or prototypes. The relations between samples have not been fully explored and utilized. Different from current works, this paper proposes to learn sample relations on different levels and take them into the model learning process, to improve the cross-domain few-shot hyperspectral image classification. Building on current method of"Deep Cross-Domain Few-Shot Learning for Hyperspectral Image Classification" which adopts a domain discriminator to deal with domain-level distribution difference, the proposed method applies contrastive learning to learn the class-level sample relations to obtain more discriminable sample features. In addition, it adopts a transformer based cross-attention learning module to learn the set-level sample relations and acquire the attention from query samples to support samples. Our experimental results have demonstrated the contribution of the multi-level relation learning mechanism for few-shot hyperspectral image classification when compared with the state of the art methods. With the rapid development of document digitization, people have become accustomed to capturing and processing documents using electronic devices such as smartphones. However, the captured document images often suffer from issues like shadows and noise due to environmental factors, which can affect their readability. To improve the quality of captured document images, researchers have proposed a series of models or frameworks and applied them in distinct scenarios such as image enhancement, and document information extraction. In this paper, we primarily focus on shadow removal methods and open-source datasets. We concentrate on recent advancements in this area, first organizing and analyzing nine available datasets. Then, the methods are categorized into conventional methods and neural network-based methods. Conventional methods use manually designed features and include shadow map-based approaches and illumination-based approaches. Neural network-based methods automatically generate features from data and are divided into single-stage approaches and multi-stage approaches. We detail representative algorithms and briefly describe some typical techniques. Finally, we analyze and discuss experimental results, identifying the limitations of datasets and methods. Future research directions are discussed, and nine suggestions for shadow removal from document images are proposed. To our knowledge, this is the first survey of shadow removal methods and related datasets from document images.

Hadamard Attention Recurrent Transformer: A Strong Baseline for Stereo Matching Transformer

In light of the advancements in transformer technology, extant research posits the construction of stereo transformers as a potential solution to the binocular stereo matching challenge. However, constrained by the low-rank bottleneck and quadratic complexity of attention mechanisms, stereo transformers still fail to demonstrate sufficient nonlinear expressiveness within a reasonable inference time. The lack of focus on key homonymous points renders the representations of such methods vulnerable to challenging conditions, including reflections and weak textures. Furthermore, a slow computing speed is not conducive to the application. To overcome these difficulties, we present the Hadamard Attention Recurrent Stereo Transformer (HART) that incorporates the following components: 1) For faster inference, we present a Hadamard product paradigm for the attention mechanism, achieving linear computational complexity. 2) We designed a Dense Attention Kernel (DAK) to amplify the differences between relevant and irrelevant feature responses. This allows HART to focus on important details. DAK also converts zero elements to non-zero elements to mitigate the reduced expressiveness caused by the low-rank bottleneck. 3) To compensate for the spatial and channel interaction missing in the Hadamard product, we propose MKOI to capture both global and local information through the interleaving of large and small kernel convolutions. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our HART. In reflective area, HART ranked 1st on the KITTI 2012 benchmark among all published methods at the time of submission. DVS: Deep Visibility Series and its Application in Construction Cost Index Forecasting

Time series forecasting is a hot spot in recent years. Visibility Graph (VG) algorithm is used for time series forecasting in previous research, but the forecasting effect is not as good as deep learning prediction methods such as methods based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory Network (LSTM). The visibility graph generated from specific time series contains abundant network information, but the previous forecasting method did not effectively use the network information to forecast, resulting in relatively large prediction errors. To optimize the forecasting method based on VG, this article proposes the Deep Visibility Series (DVS) module through the bionic design of VG and the expansion of the past research. By applying the bionic design of biological vision to VG, DVS has obtained superior forecasting accuracy. At the same time, this paper applies the DVS forecasting method to the construction cost index forecast, which has practical significance. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Automatic code summarization is an important topic in the software engineering field, which aims to automatically generate the description for the source code. Based on Graph Neural Networks (GNN), most existing methods apply them to Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) to achieve code summarization. However, these methods face two major challenges: 1) they can only capture limited structural information of the source code; 2) they did not effectively solve Out-Of-Vocabulary (OOV) problems by reducing vocabulary size. In order to resolve these problems, in this paper, we propose a novel code summarization model named Dynamic Graph attention-based Transformer (DG-Trans for short), which effectively captures abundant information of the code subword sequence and utilizes the fusion of dynamic graph attention mechanism and Transformer. Extensive experiments show that DG-Trans is able to outperform state-of-the-art models (such as Ast-Attendgru, Transformer, and CodeGNN) by averagely increasing 8.39% and 8.86% on BLEU scores and ROUGUE-L, respectively.

Nowadays, the best-effort service can not guarantee the quality of service (QoS) for all kinds of services. QoS routing is an important method to guarantee QoS requirements. It involves path selection for flows based on the current network status and the performance criteria of the service requirements. However, it is difficult for proposed solutions to obtain all the available paths owing to not fully considering all the QoS parameters of paths. In this paper, we propose SWQoS, a novel, universal, and stepwise QoS guarantee scheme based on multiple QoS parameter evaluation for selecting the available paths including preferred paths, satisfied paths and reluctant paths in SDN. The experiments show that SWQoS can select all the available paths that meet the performance criteria of the service requirements and have better QoS parameter performance compared with other path selection methods. © 2021, ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering.

Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is a new computing paradigm that enables cloud computing and information technology (IT) services to be delivered at the network’s edge. By shifting the load of cloud computing to individual local servers, MEC helps meet the requirements of ultralow latency, localized data processing, and extends the potential of Internet of Things (IoT) for end-users. However, the crosscutting nature of MEC and the multidisciplinary components necessary for its deployment have presented additional security and privacy concerns. Fortunately, Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms can cope with excessively unpredictable and complex data, which offers a distinct advantage in dealing with sophisticated and developing adversaries in the security industry. Hence, in this paper we comprehensively provide a survey of security and privacy in MEC from the perspective of AI. On the one hand, we use European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) MEC reference architecture as our based framework while merging the software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to better illustrate a serviceable platform of MEC. On the other hand, we focus on new security and privacy issues, as well as potential solutions from the viewpoints of AI. Finally, we comprehensively discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with applying AI to MEC security and privacy as possible future research directions. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Prototype-based clustering algorithms have garnered considerable attention in the field of machine learning due to their efficiency and interpretability. Nonetheless, these algorithms often face performance degradation when confronted with high-dimensional or non-ellipsoidal data distributions. To surmount these challenges, this study introduces a novel clustering approach, dubbed Clustering with Adaptive Graph learning and Spectral Rotation (CAGSR). In CAGSR, the imposed spectral rotation operation mitigates the discrepancy between the membership matrix, which adheres to the notion of fuzzy clustering, and the spectral representations derived from an adaptive graph rather than a predefined one. This enables the generation of a comprehensive representation of the data across multiple spaces. Furthermore, the clustering and graph learning tasks are jointly optimized in a projected subspace, which can effectively reduce the adverse impact caused by irrelevant features in the original space. The proposed method seamlessly integrates fuzzy clustering, graph structure learning, and spectral rotation into a unified model, facilitating the detection of intrinsic structures. Experimental evaluations conducted on benchmark data sets substantiate the effectiveness of CAGSR when compared to related clustering approaches.

An Empirical Study on Information Extraction using Large Language Models

Human-like large language models (LLMs), especially the most powerful and popular ones in OpenAI’s GPT family, have proven to be very helpful for many natural language processing (NLP) related tasks. Therefore, various attempts have been made to apply LLMs to information extraction (IE), which is a fundamental NLP task that involves extracting information from unstructured plain text. To demonstrate the latest representative progress in LLMs’ information extraction ability, we assess the information extraction ability of GPT-4 (the latest version of GPT at the time of writing this paper) from four perspectives: Performance, Evaluation Criteria, Robustness, and Error Types. Our results suggest a visible performance gap between GPT-4 and state-of-the-art (SOTA) IE methods. To alleviate this problem, considering the LLMs’ human-like characteristics, we propose and analyze the effects of a series of simple prompt-based methods, which can be generalized to other LLMs and NLP tasks. Rich experiments show our methods’ effectiveness and some of their remaining issues in improving GPT-4’s information extraction ability. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
